[meteorite-list] Ad Meteorite Sale, Several Rarities! Ad
Good afternoon Folks, Unlike the late 1990's and early to mid 2000's, I rarely sell meteorite specimens any more. But after a hiatus of nearly a decade, I’ve decided to offer a handful of truly choice meteorite specimens which I have acquired over the years, for the discriminating collector---some of which are rarely if ever seen, and a couple that are literally, all but unattainable. 1. A TYPE COLLECTOR’S TREASURE: NWA 4530, W0/1, S1, an intensely rare Anomalous CO3.05 Polymict Carbonaceous Chondrite found in Algeria in 2006. The TKW was 35.9 grams, consisting of the main mass, a 7.186 gram type sample removed from the main mass, and five fragments from that main mass which broke off on impact and which fit together like a puzzle. Several years ago I purchased all but the main mass and the type sample. Here are a couple of quotes from the primary researchers of this meteorite: “NWA 4530 is the most pristine early solar system material I have ever seen.” “There are no CO3.05s or CO3.0s or even CO3.1s that are as pristine (W/0) as NWA 4530… a unique and important meteorite!” I now offer these incredible specimens to you. 2.872g with 25% fusion crust: $650.00 .718 g with 10% fusion crust: $200.00 .224 g with 25% fusion crust: 125.00 .208 g with 25% fusion crust: $100 .016 g with about 50% fusion crust: $30 Please EMAIL ME FOR PHOTOS of these magnificent specimens, as well as additional information. 2. Brenham PAL 131g half slice, 135 X 130 X 3 mm ( very minor surface oxidation---fully intact slice) $275.00 3. Albin PAL 7.24g $200.00 4. Gebel Kamil Iron 100.56g individual---nice $70.00 5. Las Palmas Variety of Campo Del Cielo, Iron 377g $125.00 6. Stunning Canyon Diablo, Iron 1353g (three pounds) 118 X 68 X 70mm. Uncleaned with nice desert varnish. Included are brochures I picked up while visiting the impact site 18 months ago. $500.00 Shipping will be $10.00 in the lower 48. 7. Super Rare LUNARCalcalong Creek. More than a decade ago I bought some of this rare meteorite from Rob Elliot in the UK. I sold out of it on eBay within hours of listing it at upwards of $350,000 per gram. I was able to acquire a small fragment from Anne Black a couple of years ago and am letting it go, reluctantly. Despite using a gram scale accurate to .002g, I am only able to estimate the mass of this specimen at 2mg to 4mg because the scale gives both measures during weighing. This specimen is also beautiful under magnification! 8. Rare Berthoud meteorite, Witnessed fall of October 5, 2004, at 1:30 PM, a meteorite fall was witnessed in Berthoud, Colorado, and landing only 100 feet from a young girl and her family. I obtained this specimen from Edwin Thompson, of E.T Meteorites at nearly twice this price several years ago. Price slashed to $950.00. Here is a link to information about this amazing Eucrite: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=47355 9. Finally, for sale is a beautiful crusted Howardite meteorite, NWA 5513. THW was just 230g. This specimen has a mass of 19.9g and has about 40% fusion crust. $150.00. PHOTOS of all but the NWA 4530 specimens can be seen here: http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/savannahbulldogs/library/#/user/savannahbulldogs/library/? sort=4page=1_suid=1367079335609001651992591041146 Please email me with any questions or for additional information on these specimens. litig8nsh...@aol.com I accept PayPal or Money Orders. Re: [meteorite-list] BLACK FRIDAY POP QUIZ Answer
Good afternoon Folks, About 10 years ago I bought a small specimen of Calcalong Creek from Rob Eliot. I sold about a dozen .0005 to .002 gram specimens of this meteorite on eBay for $400.00 each. As available lunar material was tougher to come by back then, and given the rarity of Calcalong Creek, none of my Buy-It-Now listings on eBay lasted any more than a few hours. Conservatively, the sales price of those specimens ranged from $200,000/g to about $800,000/g. I decided to add a new, small specimen of Calcalong Creek to my collection just a couple of months ago and I paid approximately $250,000/g for that specimen---and felt darned lucky to get it at all. Best regards, Paul Martyn Savannah, GA In a message dated 11/28/2010 2:43:51 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, meteoritem...@gmail.com writes: Hi Stuart and List, Questions like this can be tricky, depending on the information sources available. For example... I once paid $100 for a 1mg speck of Sylacauga. That amounts to a staggering $100,000/gram. Even further I once traded for a 1mg speck of Lafayette. In the process of moving the speck to another gemjar, the speck fractured into two pieces - one larger, one smaller. I sold the smaller sub-speck for $100. I would wager that the speck weighed less than 1/2 milligram. So the selling price on that was about $200,000 per gram or more. From everything I have read or seen, $200K per gram exceeds any known auction price or selling price for a meteorite (per gram). Of course, I wasn't around back before the internet and during the opening days of the Saharan gold rush when lunars and martians were selling for astronomical prices. During those days, Calcalong Creek was exceedingly-expensive. It is indeed possible that some intrepid soul paid more than $200K/gram for a speck of it. Re: [meteorite-list] Sellers, would you like to keep more of your money?
Good evening Folks, In theory this method to beat the system makes a lot of sense. One caveat, however. It is against PayPal policy, as of June 3, and they threaten to sanction you if they catch you. You can presume that they will probably have some software running that will flag accounts with a significant changeover from commercial payments to personal ones. Here is their position on the idea: Beginning June 3, 2009 PayPal user agreement is being amended as follows: 1. Section 4.2 of the user agreement will read as follows: “4.2 Receiving Payments for Commercial Transactions and Personal Transactions. a. Fees depend on whether you are making a commercial transaction or a personal transaction. A commercial transaction involves buying and selling goods or services, and payments received when you send a “request money” using PayPal. A personal transaction involves sending money to and receiving money from friends and family without making a purchase. b. If you are selling goods or services, you may not ask the buyer to send you a personal payment for the purchase. If you do so, PayPal may remove your ability to accept personal payments.” Best regards, Paul Martyn Savannah In a message dated 6/27/2009 11:48:05 P.M. I know I will be offering a portion of what I will save to the buyers who use this method. This way, Its not so one sided and will benifit both parties. As with any transaction, make sure the person is reliable with this method or the normal one, but for payments to guys like Greg/Adam Hupe and others (just as examples)- who you know are honest and reliable, this method would be good option to use and the seller may offer a portion of the cost is price reduction like I am going to do. A few days later, they say: diamonds, gold and silver could have been ejected into the air during the blasts, West said, or they could have been carried south by rivers formed from the meltwater of liquified glaciers. Change your tune much? Note also that they specify a magnitude for the blast of 300,000 megatons. This would require an impactor of 1000 to 1300 meters in diameter (more for a comet) and would produce a 20-kilometer crater. They say a 5000 meter comet, for good measure. Even better is this assertion: For several months following the comet strike, the skies rained precious stone and metals, the researchers speculate. Diamonds drizzled down by the tons. FOR MONTHS? Diamonds and gold rained from the sky for MONTHS? As dust, they explain -- diamond dust and presumably gold dust. I wonder how many tens of thousands of tons of diamonds they think were laying around on the Canadian tundra? One easily testable assertion of their scheme is these massive floods of glacial meltwaters at precisely 12,900 years ago EVERYWHERE in the northern tier of states, entirely at the same instant, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Since glacial melt chronology has been worked out in great detail over a century, there should be some sign of this massive melt they speak of. (PS: they're isn't any.) While in one place, they speak of a three-mile comet, elsewhere in the press release, they speak of the multiple airbursts... Always good to have a couple of different stories going, I guess. [meteorite-list] New Meteorite hits North West U.S.
Breaking news--- Best regards, Paul Martyn Savannah, GA SPOKANE, Wash. — An apparent meteor streaked through the sky over the Pacific Northwest early Tuesday, drawing reports of bright lights and sonic booms in parts of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Although a witness reported seeing the object strike the Earth in a remote part of Adams County, in southeast Washington, it had not been found. I'm convinced it was a meteor, said Geoff Chester, spokesman for the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. It was a classic description of a fireball. Chester speculated the meteor was the size of a big suitcase and had been orbiting the sun for millions of years before entering Earth's orbit. The Federal Aviation Administration said a private pilot reported seeing the meteor hit the Earth in a burst of light near State Route 26 and the Lind-Hatton Road about 5:45 a.m. The Adams County sheriff's office had no immediate reports of damage, injury or a meteor landing in the area, about 175 miles east-southeast of Seattle and 90 miles southwest of Spokane. Chester said people commonly think they see a meteor hit or about to hit the ground, when it is nowhere close. Most meteorites that strike the Earth are never found, he said When you see objects like this in the sky your sense of scale is distorted, he said. It's a common optical illusion. A number of pilots reported seeing the meteor streaking through the sky from Boise, Idaho, into Washington state, the FAA said. Surveillance cameras in the region captured a ball of light in the sky and then a flash illuminating the early morning darkness. Television stations in Spokane reported getting viewer calls from across Washington state and north Idaho, parts of Oregon and southeastern British Columbia, starting about 5:30 a.m. The callers said it resembled summer lightning, a rocket, a satellite or an exploding transformer. A viewer from Walla Walla, about 55 miles south-southeast of the reported crash site, said she heard a sonic boom and felt a shock wave not long after seeing the streaking meteor. The East Oregonian of Pendleton, Ore., said people in that city reported hearing a sonic boom after seeing the sky light up. **Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. [meteorite-list] Lake Titicaca Meteoorite fall in Peru????
Good evening, Mr. Gregory, I did receive the two photos you sent me following my winning bid of your eBay auction. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemssPageName=STRK:MEBTOX:ITitem=300159255522_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI) I would note that the second photo you sentthe one which shows you climbing out of the crater with a few plastic bags for your photo op; and which you have posted to your latest auctionis disconcerting, to say the least. That crater has been the recipient of human waste, among other things--if I am properly informed. The fact that you climbed down into the crater-waste without appropriate protection speaks volumes about your professionalism in the science of meteoritics.not to mention your omnipotence. The photo of the crater you forwarded; which coincidentally you have apparently unilaterally named (Lake Titicaca), is not as advertised. The optical quality is quite poor, in fact--I find it difficult to believe that it is 1,200 dpi(one thousand, two hundred dpi) as I requested and, which is significantly less than the quality you advertised as possible to send. In all honesty, my three year old, 5 meg., camera would have taken a cleaner picture. Further, your eBay ad's suggestion that the photo you ultimately e-mailed me was removed from your original eBay ad (yes, I saw the ad before you removed the photoapparently concerned that some ingenious person might actually copy the photo) in order to maximize it's quality with your Photoshop software, is falling on deaf ears. Yes, I won your auction for next to nothing..unfortunately, was worth even less. So, to respond to your e-mail inquiry: Do I like the photos? I'm not fluent in enough languages to tell you that NO, I AM NOT HAPPY, I FEEL TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, AND YES RANDY, I AM A LAWYER...FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH. No worries my friend, I'm not going to sue youOn the contrary, I happen to respect the Meteorite List members with whom you were fighting before you did us all the favor, and resigned your subscription. So NO, anticipating your next query...I will NOT represent you! PS The idea that you would charge $50.00 shipping, for a one gram specimen of any meteorite you might sell on eBay, is truly repugnant. Shame on you, Sir. Best regards, Paul Martyn Savannah, Georgia, USA In a message dated 10/16/2007 12:27:00 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi, Let me know if you like them. [meteorite-list] Meteorite causes sickness.
Good evening Folks, It appears that the truth has finely been revealed. Meteorites ARE dangerous and, they cause serious illness. (LIP-ir) -- Peru's Andina News Agency reported today that Puno's Regional Health Directorate sent a group of specialists to the Carancas community in the province of Chucuito near Bolivia to take samples of a meteorite that supposedly landed in the area. Jorge López Tejada, a representative for the institution, stated that an environmental cleaning crew was going to the area to take earth and water samples from the actual landing site and from surrounding areas. The samples will be tested in Lima, where the necessary equipment is available. We hope that results will be ready within 7days, said Jorge López Tejada. In addition, Tejada stated that a health brigade, consisting of doctors and nurses would be sent to the landing site to aid people that had reported health problems after having gotten close to the supposed meteorite. Between 10 and 12 people have reported dizziness, migraines and in some cases vomiting. They assure that after having had close contact with the object the symptoms began, stated Tejada. Furthermore, Tejada stated that check ups would be performed and that it had not been discarded that the symptoms could be related to the glowing object which fell from the sky. They are healthy people, it could be (due to) radiation, we don't know, we are assuming, it's worth investigating. Things will be clearer tomorrow, stated Tejada. ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Good morning Susan, and Folks, Susan, no question is stupid. Consider though, that the surface of the Earth is approximately 196,935,000 square miles. Also, keep in mind that the Earth not only rotates on its axsis, but it also revolves around the sunso, in the 24 hours it would take for the Earth to spin once, allowing the State of Kansas to once again face the general direction of the approaching group of meteorites, Earth would no longer be in the sights of the group, having moved on in its path around the sun. Good evening Folks, In readingMark's webpage about the Tessera specimen, and what has been reported in the Met Bull, something occurred to me. Matteo reported to the Met Bull that 9 fusion crusted specimens of Tessera were found within a few meters of one another. Now granted, I am not a meteorite hunter, but looking back on the reports of other finds, never have I heard of 9 separate fusion crusted individuals being found in the same immediate area, much less within a few meters of each other. Now, if the meteorite shatters on impact, sure, I'd expect that you'd find pieces of that mass in the same area. However, there would be clear signs of the meteorite fracturing into several or more pieces. Perhaps even a meteorite puzzle to piece back together. I thought back to the Park Forest fall. With the hundreds of specimens found from that fall, how many individuals were found within a few meters of one another? I don't know that answer. (Park Forest hunters..what do you have to say?) Well, experts, is the distribution of Tessera a bit strange or am I uninformed when it comes to a meteorite strewn field? Best Regards, Paul

Re: [meteorite-list] marines....OT
Good day Folks, In response to a few of the posts to this thread, and to perhapsaddress some possible misunderstandings, I feel compelled respond. Based on my own experiences, I can say without equivocation, or mental reservation, that the reasons men and women join the United States Armed Services are as varied as those individuals themselves. While certainly there are "underprivileged" members of the armed services, and that may have been a reason for their enlistment, it is certainly not a socioeconomic traitshared byall service members. Many service members are drawn to duty by feelings of obligation to their country and their extended families, to educational opportunities both in and after service as well as the opportunity to learn more about themselves and their fellow brothers and sisters around the globe. Military service, at least in the US,is nota panacea for a depressed socioeconomic standing. Military life is often fraught with sacrifice, both personal and financial. There is opportunity, true. Concomitantly, there is risk. Risk of injury or death in times of conflict, risk of physical separation from family and loved ones and risk of being placed in a position where duty conflicts with personal feelings regarding what is right and wrong. I believe that the "cause of the USA" is a fluid thing. One which swings like a pendulum; often depending on the politics of the dayboth within and withoutthe US. The term "freedom" is often bantered about as the "cause" for the US military being in existence. But "freedom" means different things to different people and depends on their mind set. Freedom to a dictator may represent the ability to run "their" country, and to treat "their" people as "they" see fit.a viewpoint diametrically opposedby others in the world who see it more as an individual right. A right to be safe inone's person, one's opinions andone's beliefs. As long as the inhabitants of our planet have disparate "causes" to champion there will continue to be conflict. Both political and physical. If wecan agreethat glorification of members of the military is not the same as glorification of the political motives of the country they serve, then I believe it is appropriate to glorify them. We can recognize those military members for the personal sacrifices they are making; not necessarily for the "cause" theyare ultimately serving. [meteorite-list] Re: [MeteoriteCollectors] New Meteorite Group
Good morning Folks, I've remained silent regarding these recent threads until now. I am shaking my head in disbelief. Is all this really necessary Matteo? Personal differences between membersaside, I hate to see the disintegration, or attempted fracturing,of a group which, in the recent past has essentially dedicated itself to advancing the science of meteoritics. Maybe Rosie, and a few like her, were right some months ago whenthey ceased participating. There will always be personal differences among such a diverse group of people. But in my humble opinion, that is no reason to throw the baby outwith the bath wateror to advocate it. The advancement of science has no room for the exclusion of qualified individuals based solely upon personal caprice. It is just ignorant. Have a great week all. Good evening Dave, and Folks, Dave, you could be a novelist if you put your heart into it; presuming "meteorites" were involved. (there I said the "word" that makes this post "legal"). I feel badfor your misfortune but loved the story. What a hunt! Best Regards, Paul In a message dated 11/9/2003 7:24:53 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Dear List; After two weeks of snowy weather, I have ran to the wild places to attempt a meteorite hunt. Knowing that recent snows would hamper hunting I methodically processed locations where south facing slopes would offer the chance for bare ground. I decided to also have a primary rock hunting trip so I would come back with some kind of specimens even if no meteorites were located. This is always a good approach, an empty sack is demoralizing.Off to the wilds with camera, lunch, extra clothes, fuel, firearm, GPS unit, maps, water and digging tools. The further from town I traveled, the more snow. After about 40 miles of I-80, then 15 miles of gravel road, I get to a plateau where I hope to search for meteorites and oolites containing ostracods. I stopped at the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad and witnessed a fresh Vaca Murta and thought of my other meteorite friends that find dead cows. There is 6 inches of snow everywhere but the steepest south facing slopes, which are so slick with fresh mud that there is no traction there. Still the plan goes forward. No oolites in the good spot, too much snow, fell in two vacant badger holes that were covered by the snow. Reminds me of a three stooges film clip. I heard two coyotes singing the blues over the cloudy day and imminent snow fall. I see a rabbit, let's have a little hasenpfeffer for dinner, so I enhance my rock hunt with another hunt. Bang, thumb is ripped open by slide action of ultimate personal protection device, first time in my shooting sports life (over 20 years of hand gun shooting, including competition). No band aids in the van. Bled like a stuck pigthe bed of my thumb nail is ripped open. Well, I wanted to get out of the house for some adventure...here we go. Arm feels like it is falling off. Rabbit is laughing, standing up on his back legs egging me on. I submit to my stupidity and depart the scene.I find a small creek bed that has some exposed rocks protruding from the snow. I collected about 50 pounds of stream tumbled stromatolites and oolitic chert (with the ostracods, really nice stuff). Cow pies present, watch my step.I dilly-dallied around a bit more in a few more locations of top rock on a couple of small plateau's and did manage to get some serious meteorite hunting accomplished. I did not get stuck, the road was getting much muddier as the afternoon progressed. No meteorites but did find a few cretaceous iron concretions. Now, this was worth the trip, the pain, and the demoralization. Bare ground to search after two weeks of snow was good for my meteoritic soul.I can check off one more location that I found no meteorites at. About twenty square yards in two spots.Next trip: band aids, don't mess with the animals, bring companion for witness to stupidity.Very best Sunday,Dave Freeman, Adventurer!IMCA # 3864Emperor of Stromatolitesebay user ID mjwy

[meteorite-list] EBay analysis (preliminary)
Goodday Folks, I have been following the thread about thecompilation of statistical information regarding the sales/purchases of meteorites on eBay. Personally, I found the compilation both interesting and informative and I have no objection to having been included inthe publishedcompilation. That having being said, I'd like to preface the following by stating that while I am by no means an expert in "cyber law", I am an attorney. I must admit that when "robots" were mentioned in a recent post to the list I had to do some research to try and figure out exactly what a robot was and what it did. I don't claim to be a computer programer/analyst either. Now that I have arough idea what a "robot" is and what it does I'd like to share some of my thoughts regarding the compilation of statistical information from eBay. I accessed eBay's policy regarding the use of robots on it's site. I agree withone writer'sproposition that one of thereasons eBay prohibits robots from accessing its site, in some circumstances, is to prevent a drain on its server. However, I can't entirely agree that that is eBay's primary goal. In October 1997, eBay was involved in a serious dispute with Onsale, a competitor, over Onsale's use of a robot program to harvest the email addresses of eBay users. (Note that in 1997 eBay made it much easier than it is today to access the email addresses of members.) Isuspect that it was subsequent to this dispute that eBay placed in its User Policy the prohibition against use of robots, spiders etc. It would appear that eBay is also interested in protecting itself from what it views as unfair competition. As can seen below in a paste of the pertinent part of eBay's user policy regarding Access and Interference, the use of robots is clearly prohibited absent express written permission from eBay. The policy language goes further in requiring that, even with eBay's express written permission to use a robot for the creation of a derivative work (compilation of statistical information) on any other member other than yourself, you are obligated to obtain the express written permission of the "third party," which I interpret to mean the party who's information you are seeking to compile. This, I believe, is intended, at least in part,to provide for some level of privacy for eBay members. From a strict reading ofeBay's policy language one could reasonably infer that it is not only the public dissemination of the compilation of statistical information that is being prohibited, absent the required express written permission of eBay and the third party affected, but also the private (unpublished) compilation itself. However, I sense thatthe prohibition of the compilation of statistical information for the purely private use of the compiler might not be enforceable in court andmight be attacked as being vague and overbroad given that eBay's softwareactually provides tools that allow for the compilation of such information. Granted, without the use of a robot program the compilation would be very time consuming,if not entirely impractical. Finally, putting asideany legal implications (as far as eBay is concerned)of compiling statistical information about eBay members, the publication of such information has the potential for what some might consider abuse. As an example, because the sale of items may have tax consequences fora sellerinsome countries, I can imagine a scenario where one disgruntled member might use, or threaten to use, the compiled information to the detriment of another member. Just a thought. The preceding has not been intended to provide legal advise regarding the compilation of statistical information from eBay resources. Ithas simply been my thoughts and personal opinions. Should you have specific questions along this line you should consult with an expert in "cyber law". Have a great day All. Best Regards, Paul Access and Interference. The Site contains robot exclusion headers. Much of the information on the Site is updated on a real time basis and is proprietary or is licensed to eBay by our users or third parties. You agree that you will not use any robot, spider, scraper or other automated means to access the Site for any purpose without our express written permission. Additionally, you agree that you will not: (i) take any action that imposes, or may impose in our sole discretion an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on our infrastructure; (ii) copy, reproduce, modify, create derivative works from, distribute or publicly display any content (except for Your Information) from the Site without the prior expressed written permission of eBay and the appropriate third party, as applicable; (iii) interfere or attempt to interfere with the proper working of the Site or any activities conducted on the Site; or (iv) bypass our robot exclusion headers or other measures we may use to prevent or restrict access to the Site.
Re: [meteorite-list] Dealer Refunds
Good morning Geoff, Steve and all, At the risk of boring some of you, I would like to shed some light on a party's expectations of a refund from the legal perspective. Absent any specified agreement regarding refunds, and for transactions between dealers (Merchants), in the United States the Uniform Commercial Code sets forth both requirements of the purchase contract and the remedies available to an unhappy participant. While there are a number of exceptions within the Code, the following is essentially a brief overview of the Code as it applies to this situation. "Merchants" (Dealers) are defined as those folks who regularly deal in goods of the kind, (In this case meteorites) or, who hold themselves out as having special knowledge in the area of the goods. Between Merchants, enforceable agreements for the sale/purchace of goods with a price of more than $500.00 must be in writing. The Merchant/buyer typically has the right to inspect the goods upon receipt and if the goods are not conforming (i.e., not suited for the purpose intended or, in the case of meteorites not the meteorite specified in the agreement) the buyer may timely notify the seller of the rejection of the goods and is entitled to a refund. However, upon notification of rejection by the buyer, the seller has a reasonable amount of time to "cure" the defect complained of (ship the proper specimen) or enter into a modified agreement which each party can agree to. If the Merchant/buyer has already created a substantial change in the goods (such as cutting, polishing or varnishing) then the buyer will not be allowed to reject the goods. One of the exceptions to this rule might be where the cutting was part of the inspection process and revealed that the goods were not as represented by the seller (i.e., buyer contracted for a pallasite and received a mesosiderite). Absent a sound reason for rejection (buyer's remorse doesn't count) the transaction is valid and enforceable. That having been said, the common sense approaches articulated in many of the previous posts to this thread may be more important from a practical standpoint than the Uniform Commercial Code regulations. Have a clear return/refund policy. Consider the effect down the line (your reputation and desire for repeat customers) of bowing to an unreasonable request for a refund versus standing on your rights. Have a great weekend. Re: [meteorite-list] No Access To Universty of Arkansas Museum Collection Wit...
Good afternoon all, It is a terrible shame that the U of A museum is slated to be closed down for lack of funding to pay for the curating of the some seven million items in the museum. It seems to me that with seven million specimens/artifacts that a small bit of cannibalization might be in order. Certainly, the university could sell off some of the museum's collection to raise the funds to keep the museum operating, at least in the short term. Depending on the size the meteorite collection, and with some of the larger meteorite dealers in existence today, that meteorite collection alone might have a significant impact in reducing the museum's deficit. Just a thought. I wonder whether anyone at the university considered this as a possible solution. The current collection staff at the University of Arkansas must be retained if anyone is to use the collection, he said. "We have the staff. We must find the money to keep them employed. That's the answer," he said. UA administrators announced Monday that they will close the museum and lay off eight staff members at the end of this year. The decision came as part of a budget cut in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. All colleges were ordered to cut 2 percent of their budgets by university administrators. Fulbright College will save about $340,000 by eliminating the museum, more than half of its required 2 percent.

The photomicrograph seems to reveal that your find is not likely a lunar meteorite. I was most interested in seeing the white clast material under magnification. Good evening Steve and All, Lost Creek is a wonderful meteorite. However, it has been my observation that the "value" of a meteorite is usually dictated by supply and demand. A quick look at eBay shows that of the 4 specimens of Lost Creek closing recently, the Lost Creek meteorite hasn't even generated one sale at a price as low as $2.75 per gram in the last 30 days; and that price was for a specimen of less than 30 grams. Larger specimens historically sell for less than smaller ones. Just an observation. Best Regards to All, Paul Martyn IMCA #1211

Good evening Folks, I must say that I am grateful that I am not paying for the current lesson in meteoritics. I couldn't afford it. Education like this is invaluable. Thank you very much Mark for your expertise. Best Regards to all of you, Paul In a message dated 11/8/2002 10:08:23 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Minerals, regardless of where they are from, earth, moon or mars, are still those minerals and as such have properties that will identify them as such. I guess what I'm saying is that the elements of which the minerals are made of are the same, no matter if from here or there, and so, the minerals which are made of them will be made according to the same rules. Some form only under high presure and temperature, others form onder other conditions of temperature and pressure. And! some can only form in the presence of water. So, from these knowns, researchers know that, from extensive evaluation of earths lava fields and the plutonic outcroppings ( a pluton is magmatic material which has never been extruded on the surface and is exposed after millenia of weathering and erosion), the stoney irons cannot be from earth for we see no occurances of olivine and metal together "on" earth. Therefore, knowing how they formed individually (temps and pressures) they summise that these meteorites come from a core mantle boundry. Something we have not any first hand proof of. Inclusions, on the other hand, of feldspars, are quite common in cooled magmas and the resulting stone is called a porphory if the inclusions are large enough to be seen and are relatively well formed. Other tests, such as fizzing in hcl only provides a indication that a basic mineral (carbonate or such) is present. The fact that you, if I'm understanding right, are seeing what appears to be feldspars, most likely points to a magmatic origin. vesicle size is not a determinate of being magmatic or not, andesites can often have extemely small vesicles. And, if I'm not wrong, I believe in Sweden is quite a bit of plutonic rock, so its probable to be able to find lavas since plutons are but cooled magma chambers. Hope this helps, long winded as it is. Mark

Re: [meteorite-list] crystals in meteorites?
Good afternoon Folks, While we are talking about crystal formations in meteorites let's not forget the famous meteorite, Ibitira, with crystal formations in the individual vesicles. Under magnification the vesicles look like they hold baby geodes. Quite spectacular! Re: [meteorite-list] further proof that we know a whole lot less than we thin...
Very interesting observation Mr. Hodges, Thank you. It would appear that the advancing knowledge we gain through the exploration of our solar system just indicates how little we really know about it in the first place. Re: [meteorite-list] Ni-free
Good evening Folks, NWA 1109, Ni-freeor almost? Sounds like a specimen to have; which I don't. Do any of you have a specimen of this intriguing meteorite for sale? Best Regards, Paul In a message dated 9/20/2002 7:27:50 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hello everybody, In this case Ni-Free metal means 6/100th of one percent or .06%. In other words trace amounts. This was such an odd result that we measured it several times and confirmed it. We also confirmed that we were analyzing the actual metal and not some other mineral. The nickel in the metal of NWA 1109 just makes a small peak (about 3.2%) on the spectrograph and would be considered kamacite. I hope this helps, Adam

Re: [meteorite-list] Re: a bad N.E. Meteoritical Services experience?
Good evening Folks, I was very concerned today when a customer wrote that he hadn't received the specimen I shipped 19 days ago to Germany via Airmail Letter Post. From the sounds of the shipping complaints coming from the list tonight I am in part relieved and, in part, frustrated. September 11 may be part of the problem. However, I have always experienced periodic problems with delivery times, both in and out of country, with the US Postal Service. I can't comment on the Canadian postal system. I'm not sure what the answer is. Do we in the US go to a more expensive service such as UPS or FedEx? I dislike the thought of my customers spending so much for shipping. But, reality is, UPS and FedEx can be traced much more reliably for shipments from the US to other countries than can the USPS. Sad, but true. As I recall, the USPS has 60 or 90 days to tell you what happened to a package mailed via Registered mail to another country that never arrived. That just makes for unhappy customers. Another dilemma which we all know about, and many attempt to avoid, are the Custom laws of the different countries. It does no good for a customer to request shipping via the USPS and then ask that a reduced value be declared on the package. That frustrates the sender's ability to insure the package. No insurance means that someone loses if the package doesn't arrive. I am sure the "risk" is worth it until the unfortunate inevitable occurs. And, I am certain that it happen more often than we hear about. As both a buyer and a seller of meteorite specimens I would personally rather pay the duty on a specimen when it arrives than to lose the specimen to the postal system, or Customs, and likely be out the entire amount of money I paid in the first place. I solicit your thoughts and suggestions. Have a great evening all. Best Regards, Paul In a message dated 8/29/2002 7:36:42 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: We have the same problem here in HI, but it's not restricted to meteorites. Anything that looks interesting has about a 1 in 5 chance of getting 'cockaroached' between here and there. For some reason, mail from Canada seems to have a particularly rough time getting here -- just ask Dean! Things get delayed up to 2 months, and I still haven't gotten a piece I was expecting from Eduardo back in May (no reflection on him, I'm sure.) To sum up, there DOES seem to be a backlog in the Post Office, and we should live in fear and loathing as to what might happen when the Yule season rolls around.
