Re: [meteorite-list] Tsunami alert

2010-02-27 Thread Matthew Martin
Things are getting pretty busy here on Oahu. Lines at gas stations are
horribly long. Boats are evacuating harbors...The City & County has evacuation
busses going around the island…the Fire Department is doing evacuation
rounds…almost everything is closed...and there's still crazy people out
surfing! And no, I'm not talking about Gary. ;)

The Earth shook a lot yesterday... 8.8 in Chile last night, a 7.0 near Okinawa
yesterday (no tsunami generated), and a 2.5 near the southeast coast of the Big
Island yesterday. The Okinawa earthquake is the largest they've had in over
100 years.

To my fellow list members in the islands, take care and stay safe.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: etching with radio shack etchant

2010-05-03 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Ron,

Since reading the article and you and your son wrote, I have used
nothing but Ferric Chloride to etch my irons. Your directions were
very thorough. A few months ago I etched a Campo that I resurrected
from a rusty graveyard and it produced a gorgeous pattern using FC.
Of course after sanding, I polished it before etching. Don't let one
sour grape get at you--especially since he didn't follow your
directions correctly. Even though it's been eight years since your
article was published, I want to say "thank you" to you and Jim for
your contribution to the field; It gave me the confidence to etch my
own irons...and with stunning results!

Matthew

Quoting R N Hartman :

I was just browsing through some of the posts on Joes Skyrockcafe
website when I ran across a post from a collector who was unhappy with
the Radio Shack etchant for iron meteorites. He claims to have sanded
a Campo down to #400 but could not get a Widmanstatten pattern,
although he did get a beautiful pattern using the traditional Nitric
method.

My son, Jim, and I posted an article in the November 2002 issue of the
Meteorite Times about preparing and etching irons using Ferric Chloride
(which is the same material as used in the Radio Shack etchant). The
method has been used widely since that time with outstanding success by
many and with superior results, so there is now an undisputed 8 year
positive history. Etches show more contrast and subtle details come
out more readily, and fears of ferric chloride use have been put to
rest as the specimens are not rusting and crumbling. In fact, they do
just as well if not better than when etched with nitric. (But that is a
topic for another day.)

I think the problem of the person in posting his negative experience
was that after grinding down to a #400 grit that he did not then polish
out the surface. Unlike preparing an iron to etch with nitric acid,
the surface wants to have a highly reflective mirror-like surface
before etching. As we say in the article, however, every meteorite is
different and can react differently to different circumstances, so he
may have just had an unusual, but uncommon, experience. He may have a
very different experience with a different Campo. (I have many
Ferric-etched slices of Campos in my personal collection and they are
all doing well.)

[meteorite-list] Extra Small Riker Mounts - AD

2010-07-06 Thread Matthew Martin

Hi Fellow Listoids,

The extra small Riker Mounts been out of production for a while now
and command a steep price when they can be found, however I've been in
talks with the manufacturer about having them run a line of 2.5 x 3"
Riker mounts for me. Due to the cost of having to have the
manufacturer produce a new die and hand cut the glass as their
supplier no longer provides glass of this size, it would not be
cost-effective for me to have a full pallet (65 case minimum)
manufactured unless I am confident that there is enough interest in
them. I would sell them for 2.75-3.25 each depending on the quantity
purchased. If you would be interested in acquiring some if I had them
produced, please let me know.

some loose specimens for trade/sale as well.

[meteorite-list] Auctions Ending & Website Update

2011-02-13 Thread Matthew Martin

Hello fellow listees,

I have several dozen auctions that will be ending over the next three
days (beginning in about 11 hours). Pieces up for auction include
some beautifully oriented baby Sikhote-Alin's, a miniature specimen
with lot of miniature regmaglypts, a brand new CV3 I had classified
(provisionally NWA 6571), NWA 6159 (CV3), NWA 6160 (L6), Mount Egerton
(Aub.), Toufassour (Meso), Tatahouine, Chergach, Toluca, Admire, NWA
515, NWA 2948, NWA 869, Pallasovka, Mount Tazerzait, and a variety of
unclassified stones (whole, end-cuts, and slices). In addition, I
have extra small Rikers available as well.

After some difficulties with my website prior to going to Tucson, I
completely redesigned it (hopefully for the better). Currently it is
populated mainly with meteorite jewelry, however I will be adding a
variety of loose specimens in the coming weeks. You can see the new
site in action at www.meteoritetreasures.com

Here's wishing everyone traveling home from Tucson safe travels!

Hi Michael & List,

I carry 2x3" rikers (not Riker brand). I sell them to list members
starting at $3.00 each with price breaks at greater quantities.
They're higher priced as I had these custom made (since no one makes
this size any more) and had to pay to have a die made and then have
them shipped to Hawaii. Anyway...if you're ever looking for the tiny
2x3" size, I've got them.

Hi Barry,

I came across a single small stone that appears very similar to yours
a few weeks ago when sorting and cleaning a batch of UNWA's. I'll try
to image it tomorrow evening and post for a comparison. I have no
clue about what it is though. Mine's an oldie though...perhaps part
of the terrestrializing process?

Quoting Barry Hughes :

Hi, just wondering if anybody ever came across anything like this. I
found these when cleaning a bunch of UNWA rocks for a work give-a-way.
That's a mm magnet sticking to them.

[meteorite-list] AD: New Website

2010-08-16 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Everyone,

Now that I'm finally happy with its appearance and have most of the
bugs worked out of it, I'm pleased to announce the launch of my new
site: www.meteoritetreasures.com

I've spent months preparing the site, loading inventory and writing
code and making alterations, but it's functional and attractive now, I
think. I've still got a lot of inventory to load, but please have a
look.

My inventory is composed primarily of meteorite jewelry. All of the
jewelry is made by my family...my mother, my wife, and myself. The
glass work has by far been the most difficult due to the different
cooling speeds of glass vs. nickel-iron meteorites...oftentimes
causing the glass to break or crack. We've been perfecting our
techniques and developing a new line of encapsulated meteorites.
These aren't the type that have a plastic pop-top that allows you to
insert material...I mean we hand-craft a sealed glass capsule with a
meteorite inside and fashioned it into a pendant. Most at the moment
are small campos and Sikhote-Alin's...I do have one Tatahouine that's
not on the site yet.

Our jewelry inventory includes pendants, earrings, sets, bookmarks,
keychains, martian jewelry, and tie-tacs.

Also available on the site in authentic (non-jewelry) form is Daule,
Fukang, Campo del Cielo,Uruacu, DaG 476, Karoonda, Buzzard Coulee
(w/copy of papers), Tatahouine, Suizhou, NWA 1929, Chergach, and more!

I also carry a line of supplies including Riker boxes and Silica Gel
Desiccant packs. Those who inquired about the extra small rikers,
just to let you know, I will be having them made in the very near
future and will announce to the list when they are available.

Of course I will offer a 10% discount off of all web prices upon
checkout--use coupon code "metlist" for your 10% discount off your
subtotal. Shipping is only $2.00 total for the US no matter what you
order and only $3.00 for international customers.

Thank you all for looking.

[meteorite-list] AD: New L6 Chondrite for Sale

2010-09-16 Thread Matthew Martin

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to introduce you to a brand new stone--NWA 6160
(Provisional). It's a beautiful L6 chondrite (W1/2, S2) which would
make a handsome addition to any collection, large or small. Many
easily affordable pieces are available, but with a TKW of only 333g,
there's not much of this to go around...only a few dozen pieces and
that's it!

I submitted it for analysis due to it's unusual aromatic perfume like
odor, but the analysis did not provide any clues to the origins of the
odor. I was told, however that it does have trace amounts of native
copper.

The analysis report from Dr. Irving at the University of Washington is
as follows:

Largely recrystallized with some indistinct chondrules. Olivine
(Fa24.2-24.6), orthopyroxene (Fs20.9-21.3Wo1.8-1.7), sparse
clinopyroxene, sodic plagioclase, chromite, kamacite and troilite.

For a list of available specimens and pricing, please visit the
following link:

http://meteoritetreasures.com/nwa6160?___store=default

Shipping is only $2.50 to anywhere in the world via first class air
mail. Insurance is additional, if desired, and is the responsibility
of the buyer. Please email me using the "contact" links on the page
(or reply to this message) to let me know if you're interested in

[meteorite-list] International Shipping/Customs Questions

2010-10-03 Thread Matthew Martin

Hi Everyone,

As I have been sending more specimens to international destinations, I
have some questions for those who have more experience in this arena.
I've searched the net and have not been able to find any information
related to this topic, so I hope it's not a repeat:

1. What is the proper declaration description of a meteorite for
customs forms?

I've seen a variety, such as "geological specimen", "geological
sample", "mineral specimen", etc., and want to know which terms are
best to use (and not to use). I have had a bad experience with a
package I was receiving which was labeled "meteorite" in the
description of the declaration form and a customs agent in Tennessee
called me and didn't want to release the package because "meteorites
could contain dangerous bacteria" (I'm not kidding!). Does it matter
is the term "sample" is used vs. "specimen"?

For this question, I am referring to loose meteorite specimens only
(not jewelry).

2. Are there any countries that anyone is aware of that prohibit the
receipt (import) of meteorites from individuals who live there?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [meteorite-list] International Shipping/Customs Questions

2010-10-04 Thread Matthew Martin

Hello Brian & List,

Thank you to all of you who chimed in to answer my questions. I
received many responses and appreciate you all taking the time to
personally respond to my inquiry...hopefully I didn't miss anyone and
you all received a response from me. I appreciate your willingness to
share your experiences and insights into the challenges of shipping
meteorites around the world.

The general consensus is to label meteorites as either a Mineral or
Geological specimen for study. Brian provides the code used by
customs below for this classification and would leave little room for
error on a customs agent's behalf (unless s/he felt nosey).

Marcin brought a good point into light which some have already
adopted, including myself. A few weeks ago I began changing the
return address name on my packages from Meteorite Treasures to MT to
make it more difficult for nosey individuals to figure out what's
inside.

Thanks to all who chimed in! You exemplify what the Metlist stands for!

Matt

Quoting BRIAN SCHROEDER :

Hello Matt and List
I have been working part time as an International Shipping Agent for
about 17 years as well as clearing Customs personally with Goods.
The Classification I use is :NATURAL MINERAL SPECIMENHC #
7103.10.00.00
Adding the technical name does not hurt either, and helps Customs
Agents to see that the Specimen is not a Corundum, Beryl or Granet.
The HC Stands for Harmonized Code or International Harmonized Tariff
Coding System.
The HC # is the Classification for "Precious and Semi-Precious stones
(other than diamonds), whether or not worked or graded, but not strung,
mounted or set.", basically anything that is a Rock..
So the following would be suitable for any International Package.

NATURAL MINERAL SPECIMENHC # 7103.10.00.00 " carbonaceous Ch. CV3
" or " any name here "

All Customs I know of use this International Harmonized Tariff Coding
System , regardless if they can read the Language of the Shipper. These
numbers are an International Language.
Most countries have a 0.0% Tax base for Mineral Specimens as well as
them being Duty Free.
Providing the HC takes away the need for any Customs inspector to go
through the effort to Classify a rock, correctly or not, and can save
you and customers precious dollars.
Honestly declaring the Correct value of any item, especially when
Insured Shipping is used does not hurt..
Not mentioning that the package contains a Meteorite is also a smart move..
I have never heard of a Country that Mineral Specimens are prohibited
from entering , only shipping the Specimens out of some countries is
illegal. ( eg. Myanmar )

Happy Shipping

[meteorite-list] AD: New Classified CV3

2010-10-11 Thread Matthew Martin

Hello Fellow Listoids,

I'd like to introduce you to a brand new CV3 from the deserts of
Northwest Africa. It is NWA 6159 (Provisional). I acquired a large
662g stone early this year and submitted a sample for study and
classification. Analysis and classification was performed by A.
Irving of the University of Washington.

Analysis:

Well-formed ellipsoidal to irregular, granular chondrules (some
concentrically layered with ?dust? rims) and sparse PO chondrules,
plus coarse grained CAI (composed of gehlenite, spinel, perovskite,
taenite, troilite and Cr-bearing (?)magnetite or metal) and rare
amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOA), in a very fine grained dark brown,
ferroan matrix. Olivine (Fa1.9-10.9), orthopyroxene (Fs3.7Wo0.6),
clinopyroxene (Fs4.8Wo33.9). W2, S1.

-

All typs of pieces are available on my website
(www.meteoritetreasures.com), including whole individuals, end-cuts,
and slices. Price varies from $5/g to $10/g. All large slices were
cut by Matt Morgan using his state-of-the-art wire saw. Given the
friability of this meteorite, pieces were not polished after cutting
and may exhibit wire saw marks. Clicking the pictures on my website
will open a full sized image with greater detail.

I was able to acquire some additional material after the initial main
mass and I have many small complete individuals available as well.
List members receive 10% off of my website prices.

I'll take this opportunity to also mention that I have 20 auctions up
on ebay that will extend throughout this week. Some rare (and not so
rare) material. My eBay username is meteoritetreasures

Re: [meteorite-list] Finding fossil Meteorites

2010-10-25 Thread Matthew Martin

Hello Dave & List,

Dave, thanks for sharing this article. I found it very interesting
and admit that I had never given a second thought to the possibility
of meteorites being buried in sedimentary rock just as once living
organisms. I also found the information on their fossilization very
cool. Thanks again for sharing. For anyone who has not read it yet,
it's a short, yet informative article.

As for your stones, Dave, I am not a minerologist, so I will not
speculate on their type. If I were to give a guess though, I'd say
they're terrestrial.

Aloha!

Hi List,

Has anyone read this great artical about meteorites being found in Ordivician
fossil limestone.
After reading it I starting searching months ago. And found 2 very
interesting

stones, One looks like it could be a diogenite and the other stone has a
subophitic texture like some lunars and a few Angrites

So here is a link to the artical if you have not read it,

and second is link is to my face book page with pictures of what I found and
where they were found, Just wondering are they worth getting tested, I do not
want to waste money if there not.

Re: [meteorite-list] Cutting Blades for Meteorites

2010-11-01 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Scott & Fellow Listoids,

This is a topic that comes around periodically and there's a lot of
very useful information in the list archives. I would suggest you run
a Google search; this came up most recently this past June and there
were some very helpful answers. The list members not only shared
their thoughts on the equipment that they use, but gave tips for
cutting and shared their personal experiences at the saw as well. The
discussion was titled "Lessons from the Saw - Cutting Meteorites for
Newbies and Curious Onlookers". MikeG posted a lengthy, yet very
helpful post which can be found here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com/msg86554.html

As for me, I picked up a .014" kerf MK 303 sintered blade after that
discussion and have not regretted it one bit. Now, I cannot provide a
comparison as this is the only blade I have used so far, however I
have been very happy with it. There was another blade suggested by a
list member that I was considering and after a comparison of the two I
felt that the MK303 was a better fit for my needs; that too can be
found in the archives.

I hope this helps.

Re: [meteorite-list] Help desperately needed for presentation to second graders

2010-12-09 Thread Matthew Martin

Hi Susan,

Those are young kids so your lesson/topic should not delve too deep
into specifics. While I teach 7-12 and have taught 4-6 in the past, I
don't have experience with 2nd grade. However, my experience tells me
that a good topic would be the solar system in general. It may or may
not be a review for them...many schools teach the solar system at or
around this level--check with their teacher(s) ahead of time. If you
can let them know ahead of time what you will cover, they may also be
able to arrange their preceding lessons to prepare the students for
your visit.

For an activity, I would suggest having them model the solar system.
There are a variety of ways to do this...balloons work well with that
age. Have them blow up balloons to different sizes (and colors) to
understand size relationships between the planets. Most party shops
carry variety packs with a mixture of colors. They also may carry
black balloons which I would use for the asteroid belt. This is where
I would tie in the meteorites--their probable origin.

You could create a very simple model of two solar bodies (cross
sections perhaps made out of styrofoam)--one, a planet, and the other
a large asteroid (this will show them how similar the two bodies are).
Without going into specifics of density and differentiation, I would
keep it simple...such as "the inner part of a planet is called the
core. This means your model would have only two colors/regions in its
interior at its simplest form. Explain to them that like the Earth,
large asteroids too have cores. The core of planet Earth is made of
molten iron (you may want to bring in an object made of iron as a
visual (i.e. horseshoe). Then share with them that large asteroids
likely have a core of iron too.

At that point, it would be good to show on the model that the outer
layer around the core of planets and large asteroids is called the
mantle and is made of rock. Essentially what you have done is set up
the explanation for why we have different types of meteorites. You
can then show them stone meteorites and ask them where they would come
from...the core or the mantle (mantle). And you could show them an
iron and ask where they think it would have come from (core).
Finally, to challenge them to think critically, show them a stony iron
pallasite and explain that it is a mixture of rock and metal...where
do they think that it would have come from? (here's where great
dialogue from the kids will (hopefully) come in. Praise wrong answers
with appreciation for their effortperhaps you can redirect them to
the right answer by responding to their answer with a question.

Anyway...I hope this helps.

box to the community. It's very similar to the traditional boxes we
are familiar with, however all of these boxes, including the smallest
are hinged. This is a nice feature as you don't feel like the top is
going to pop off when opening the case, causing the contents to
possibly fall out. Open these with confidence! These boxes are made
in the USA.

I am offering 3 sizes (all hinged) of membrane boxes, starting at $2
each for the small boxes. Bulk discounts are available.

To view these new boxes, visit my website at
www.meteoritetreasures.com and click the Membrane Box banner on the
home page to quickly sort to the membrane boxes.

I am also in the process of listing up new material so check back
often. I just did a price drop on NWA 6963 (Martian Shergottite)
slices--check out some of the slices on my website. I also have a few
NWA 6963 thin sections (uncovered) available.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Page

2012-01-06 Thread Matthew Martin
Since Paul's schedule will not permit him time to produce the Tucson
page this year, I'm working on putting together a page. I want to
take a moment to thank Paul for always putting his page together--your
time and work are greatly appreciated. I should have the new page up
later tonight and will post a link to it when it's ready.

Aloha and Happy New Year to everyone!

[meteorite-list] 2012 Tucson Show Page for Meteorite Enthusiasts

2012-01-07 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Everyone,

Following in Paul's shoes (and they're big and hard to fill!), I've
setup a page to allow those attending the 2012 Tucson Gem & Mineral
Show next month to share information about their visit with others.

The output will be in PDF documents for easy printing and there are
three different (sorted) ways to view the information.

You can see the lists and register here:

[meteorite-list] Tucson Page Update

2012-01-11 Thread Matthew Martin
Aloha and thanks to everyone who has taken the time to submit your
visit information for the upcoming Tucson show. I have updated the
documents to include all entries submitted to date.

Please keep the following in mind when registering:

1. Please only check the dealer box if you are an official dealer who
is selling in a room.

2. If you are staying in a motel or the similar with multiple
locations in the area, it would be helpful if you could include the
street name so that when I sort the lists, they group properly. (e.g.
if you are staying at a Motel 6, please be specific, such as "Motel 6,
Ina Rd."). Of course, listing your hotel information is completely
optional to begin with, but details help sorting).

3. Entries do not automatically populate into the PDF documents. I
manually enter them with the information submitted. At this point in
time I am updating the list every 24-48 hours as time permits, in and
around my work schedule.

Three PDF documents for easy printing are available:
1. All attendees (visitors & dealers) sorted by location (hotel)
2. All attendees (visitors & dealers) sorted by last name
3. Official dealers sorted by location (hotel) and room number

Taking a suggestion from a list member, in the future I will add a
document with hotel and public event details.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Extremely Fresh L4 - white/grey matrix - NEW Meteorite

2013-04-28 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Everyone,

I'm pleased to introduce a new, extremely fresh L4 meteorite, NWA 7827
(Provisional). Believed to be from a fall on December 16, 2012 in
Mauritania, this beautifully shocked L4 displays well with it's rich
black fusion crust and light grey and white matrix with shock veins
throughout. Dr. Tony Irving from the University of Washington
analyzed the stone and has classified it an L4 chondrite, S3, W0.

The 467g stone I purchased had beautiful regmaglypts covering half of
the stone, and I did not want to destroy them. So I only cut the
featureless half of the stone. I only produced 4 slices out of the
half which I cut: 8.3g, 35g, 38.9g, 47.1g. That's it! You can see
and purchase the 4 slices and 275g main mass on my website. I will
have a few auctions on eBay in the near future for some of the small
fragments (which broke off during cutting--all are less than a gram.

See all slices and the main mass on my website: www.meteoritetreasures.com

If interested in any slices, the main mass, or even the fragments
(before they're listed on eBay), please contact me off-list.

Also, I have small, medium and large membrane boxes available. The
are made in the USA, have hinges for durability and stability when
opening, and are deeper than previous membrane boxes which have become
nearly impossibly to get hold of.

You can see the membrane boxes on my site here: http://tinyurl.com/cocedw4

Thanks for looking everyone!

Aloha,

Matthew

[meteorite-list] Article: Discovery of probably Tunguska meteorites at the bottom of Khushmo river's shoal

2013-05-02 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Everyone,

A newly published (4/29/13) article on Tunguska in PDF format is
available for free download from the Cornell University Library. I
can't say I agree with calling it the discovery of "meteorites"--I
think "impact glass" would be a better description, but it's an
interesting read nonetheless. Shatter cones are also discussed.

The link below will take you to a Cornell University Library page with
a one paragraph abstract of the article. To download the entire
paper, click the download "PDF Only" link on the upper right of the
web page.

2013-06-09 Thread Matthew Martin

Aloha Everyone,

I've just received a new shipment of hinged membrane boxes and am
offering a sale on them from now through Wednesday (June 12th). I've
received great positive feedback from many collectors and institutions
with regard to these boxes and am pleased that they have been received
with high regard. These boxes offer additional depth compared to the
traditional membrane boxes and the hinged case makes it easier to open
without jarring the contents or misplacing the lid. Cases close
securely via a snap fastener.

For photos and box dimensions, click here:
