Hello Mike, at present the magnitude of (163800) Richardnorton is 21.4mag - very faint... In the next opposition the magnitude reach only 20.1mag but in 2011 (end of July) the brightness will be around +18.5mag. [meteorite-list] Richard Norton memorial
I'm posting this on behalf of Dave Mouat. Dear Listees Last Sunday, I had the honor to pay tribute to a man I have known for more than a third of a century (that's right: over 33 years, I was a young Prof at the U of AZ and he was a young but slightly older person who was talking about the desirability of a planetarium at the UofA). I later found out that he was also a faculty (earlier) at the place I now work: the Desert Research Institute of the Nevada System of Higher Education. Quite a coincidence. The Memorial for Richard took place at the home of Dorothy Norton in Bend, Oregon, where they had lived for over 20 years (and a beautiful home it is). Dorothy had asked me to say something about Richard, the scientist and meteoriticist. I borrowed a couple of pieces from his collection and augmented them with some of my own. I added anecdotes about Richard's passion and dedication as a scientist (somewhat of a rarity as a lot of us plod through our work rather than tackle it with the fervor and enthusiasm of a post doc). I also mentioned how Richard had argued with the serious research community involved with meteorites that the hobby had added material for researchers not taken it away from them (of course, this is still a bit controversial). I mentioned the articles and explanations that Richard patiently gave us. There were no people at the Memorial who knew him as a scientist save for a neurologist, they were mostly music lovers, a side of Richard that most of the meteorite community was not aware, and the gathering was astounded to hear how we (and you) regarded him. I think the one thing that was so special was a book of contributions of special memories from you Listees that someone decided to print out on heavy paper as a lasting testiment for Dorothy to treasure and cherish. Even the gathering there was moved by the words that many of you wrote. I am honored and proud to be among you. I started my day as I almost always do, just me and an old worn out copy of ROCKS FROM SPACE. I just open it up to any old page, and read a few I don't read it so much to learn anymore (although I always do pick up something new) I just like to go to the place it takes me. Its a safe, fun, happy place to go. Its like spending time with an old friend. I decided to drive to Mt. Bachelor this morning, and found myself standing hi above Central Oregon looking down on all the glory, wondering what to do next. A bright sunny spring day, on top of the world. I felt a compelling urge to drive to the Sunriver Nature Center to look at the Norton collection on display...so I did. I stood and stared at all the incredible meteorites on display, (and drooled a bit) I day dreamed about starting a meteorite museum of my own. maybe a collaboration effort. The Norton/Hall museum I dream.. Then I come home and read the Met List. I see all the posts. I cry... I'm sorry, I don't know what to say My deepest sympathies go to Dorothy and the Norton family members, Bill Hall __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I've been on vacation for the last week and haven't been keeping up with the List. Richard's passing was terrible news. I had the privilege of meeting him and Dorothy once at Tucson, and it was a joy. My copies of RFS are treasured research tools, and I regret not having picked up a copy of his Field Guide sooner. [meteorite-list] Richard Norton: stunned shock
Hello everyone - In my day to day work with impacts I deal with the sudden unexpected deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. I try to remain light hearted in my comments, as these impacts are bad news that many people have trouble facing. I am so light hearted that sometimes people wonder why I am so intense as well. I suppose that there is no higher tribute to the character of Richard Norton than the fact that the meteorite community has come to a screeching halt. The wikipedia entry should be easy to write, just by taking the obituary which his wife Dorothy wrote and placing it there. Reading this obituary, I was surprised to learn of his development of the fish-eye lens, as I had by quite taken at Disneyland by the 3-D effect when an image is projected against a hemisphere. Beyond the meteorite community, this technology touches millions of people each year. I wonder if his illness was related to his work at the atomic tests? Many have passed due to radiation exposure at these; no one knew at the time. Bottom line, Richard Norton was blessed with opportunities which he made the most of. He was also blessed to find a good partner, and had a long life, passing while surrounded by friends and family. Not many have such a fate. The lesson that I take from this is that we should keep in mind that each moment of life is precious, and we should make the most of it. E.P. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
"To hold in your hand something alien, created before Earth existed, irresistible. Once, while giving a lecture to a group of vacationers on a cruise ship, I casually handed a meteorite to someone in the first row and asked that it be passed around so everyone would have a chance to hold a rock from space older than Earth. The reaction was electric. People clambered to touch it, and a riot nearly ensued. The allure of these ancient rocks is universal. They speak in all languages. To hold something older than Earth is to return to creation itself..." O. Richard Norton Rocks from Space (from the Introduction) All has already been said, and this tribute to Richard Norton has been appropriately incredible. Returning to these words (the best I've ever seen to describe the sensation we all know so well) from time to time has become habit for me, and I'll always appreciate more than words can say the wonderful doors of inspirational opportunity this book has opened for me and countless others... Meteorite friends, I was not going to post on this sad topic, having only been collecting 3 or 4 years. I figured that since I had never met this great man, I didn't have anything useful to contribute. But perhaps it's people like me who have the most thanks to give. After acquiring my first few meager meteorites, I bought Rocks From Space, at the recommendation of the seller. What an eye opener! The other books quickly followed. I have learned much from them and will continue to learn more. He has left an enormous legacy for which I am thankful. I wish I'd had the privilege of meeting him, but will strive to know him more through his books. My condolences and prayers go out to Dorothy and the rest of the Norton family. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Hello everyone, I spent all day Wednesday at an inspirational and motivational seminar, and this was my first opportunity to check emails. When I saw the huge number of messages in my inbox, I knew something had happened. Watching all of the messages scroll up the screen while being downloaded, with most of them displaying "Richard Norton" in the header, I could only hope that the news was good. Alas, it was not. I was saddened to learn of Richard's passing. His book, "Rocks From Space" was the very first meteorite book I purchased. I was introduced to his work by a meteorite collector who is also a member of our local Astronomy club. I was so motivated by what I read in just a few minutes, that I purchased a copy on Amazon.com that evening. When the second edition of "Rocks From Space" came out, I purchased a copy in hardcover from a meteorite list member. Much to my pleasure, this copy was signed by both O. Richard, and Dorothy Norton! Meeting Richard at a meteorite related event or show was something that I had hoped would happen one day. I wanted to share with him how through his book, my interest in collecting meteorites was spawned. Although he is gone, his works will continue to inspire me and others. When I stop and think about it, Richard inspired me more in the few minutes I spent browsing my friend's copy of "Rocks From Space" than I was inspired throughout the entire day I just spent at that seminar. That says a lot about Richard, and I want everyone to know how much I appreciated his work. I want to extend my condolences to Dorothy Norton, and the Norton family. Their loss is ours a well. Dorothy and all, How do you spell meteorite?-O-R-I-C-H-A-R-D-N-O-R-T-O-N. This name is irrevocably tied to meteorites and their study. Richard has done more to popularize and introduce the world to meteorites and meteoritics through his wonderful books than any person I can think of. Richard states in his preface to the second edition of Rocks From Space that he wrote it to fill an obvious void. That void was most admirably filled! The book was enthusiastically received by both amateurs and scientists and continues to be the best introduction to meteorites available, and Dorothy, your art on the cover makes it most visually appealing as well as the artwork for his follow-up books, The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites and the Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites. The name and the works of Richard Norton will live on in all of us who love meteorites. Dear Dorothy. Richard's book was the first that I read on meteorites and greatly enhanced my knowledge and desire. It is still the ONLY book that I consistently recommend to new collectors. Rest assured that a life that has so enriched others never really ends but goes on in the hearts of those of us who knew Richard. My deepest sympathy. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Yesterday evening our internet services announced that our web connections will be fully restructured and that we will be cut off from mail connections for 12 hours (overnight). Currently I love having night contacts and chats life, with most of you listee friends there from "overseas" so I was a little frustrated. I then rushed to send my last mail yesterday to... Anne Black. And this morning her mail was the first in a row to appear...but with that strange title: "Richard Norton" An undefined forewarning immediately crossed my mind... "Oh my God, NO!...not Richard..not HIM"! I then read the numerous posts with a lump in my throat, with a feeling between shock and deep sadness. What a terrible loss for all of us! I never had the honor to meet Richard. I know him through his ever popular and inspiring books, unanimously now considered as masterpieces by specialists, but also a permanent source of knowledge and inspiration also so easily accessible to meteorite amateurs. Whoever started to collect and love those "rock falling from the skies" was soon eager to learn more about these strange "stones". And so did I, through acquiring the at the time edited Norton's authoritative "Rocks from Space" or its not less famous "Cambridge Encyclopedia", still now unanimously considered as the "best of the best" popular and scientifically significant references to permanently consult. These references brought Richard to be forever with us through his achievements. Here I have a suggestion and a statement to make. Suggestion: should we try to sensitize the scientific community to name one of the next discovered asteroids in honor to Richard Norton ? Statement: last night I just finalized the English flyer for the next Ensisheim meeting. It could not be sent because of internet restructuring. I am therefore right now still in time to modify the first page by adding that the 2009 edition of the show will be dedicated to Richard Norton. This will be also officially announced during the Friday evening ceremonies. I feel this is the least we can do to honor a great man, a giant's memory, forever. On behalf of many of my local friends from Ensisheim and also from the Belgian club of meteorite collectors (CTSA), I wish to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to Dorothy. May I suggest she always keeps painting the "odd features of the space life" so fully appreciated throughout Richard's books. Dorothy, besides the pleasure we all will have to admire your productions, they will for sure contribute to maintain your mind close to your beloved Richard who is certainly now "somewhere there over", happy among the stars... Anne, Thanks for the heads up on this very sad news. Like most everyone else who loves meteorites, the first book I read on the subject was by Richard Norton ("Rocks From Space"). I so wanted to meet him, but just never had the chance. I will always regret that. To Dorothy Norton, I'm so very sorry for your loss. Know that my prayers and thoughts are with you. Truly a great man! I have always waited for Richard and Dorothy to come to our room to chat every Tucson show. He always brought a smile and enthusiasm that could not be duplicated every time he walked in. I am so grateful for his books, as Rocks from Space changed my life, it gave me an understandable guide to start my meteorite collection then helped me morph from hobby to worldwide adventures. Dear Dorothy, and List, It was with tremendous, heartfelt sorrow that I read the email of Richard's passing. But what a wonderful outpouring of respect for Richard and you from our members, proof of all the many lives the both of you have touched and enriched. He truly was a well loved and respected, gem of a man. I count myself as being very lucky to have had the times (be they all-too-brief) spent in talking with you both. I will never forget the thrill that Richard gave me the day that he contacted me and asked if he could use a couple of my photos in his magnificent Encyclopedia of Meteorites. You both have been very kind to me, and I will never forget either of you. You and Richard will be in my family's prayers. Dear friends, As my eyes leak at the passing of a friend and colleague it is noted that all the words of condolence are a collection of words and deep thoughts that we all felt about Richard. Now it is time to celebrate how incredibility fortunate we are to have Richard Norton in our lives - yes he is gone from our immediate grasp , But look at the legacy he has left behind - words in the significant books of our time about meteorites that will be our reference manuals to this incredible science of meteoritics'. Dorothy and Richard were an unbeatable team that will live forever in our collective minds. I celebrate this great man that we all shared together. Thanks AL, That page is nicely done but I was talking about a real "Meteorite Hall Of Fame" where one day all the greats could be found at a glance. After all, some (like Jim) didn't much in the way of a written record like Norton and Nininger did. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Dear Dorothy, Larry and I are so sorry to hear the sad news about Richard. Both of you must have known how much we enjoyed our many times together in Tucson. One of the amazing things about Richard was his way of writing things that gave such feeling to the readers. Two things have always remained in my mind and I wish to share them with others. First of all, I consider myself, Larry, Jim Kriegh and our son Chris and daughter-in-law Bridget to be so very fortunate to have experienced this: We and the Nortons were gathered at our house after dinner and of course Richard was carrying on a lively discussion about meteorites. At one point he asked that the lights be dimmed and he wanted to see my copy of Rocks from Space. He turned to the Epilogue and began reading out loud from his book: In late 1984, I gave a small iron meteorite to astronaut Dick Scobee in commemoration of his visit to the University of Arizona, where he had graduated in engineering. Scobee was scheduled to command the space shuttle early the next year. I suggested, half in jest, that he return the meteorite to its home in space on his next voyage. In a way, it would be a historic event - a meteorite returning to space! A few weeks later a letter arrived from Scobee. He thanked me for the meteorite, calling it a "nice little treasure" and assured me that he would, indeed, return it "at least temporarily to the environment from which it came." On January 28, 1986, the meteorite began its historic return journey but never made it home. Nor did the crew of seven. Their ship was the Challenger. I still get chills when I read this passage and remember Richard reading it to us. Another thing that he wrote which shows his deep thinking and good imagination is from his article in Meteorite magazine May 2001 on the Tucson Show. Thank you, Tucson. Thank you, dealers. Thank you, collectors. Together you pulled off a memorable show. As I watched all of you enjoying yourselves at Jim Kriegh's "meteorite" party, my thoughts returned briefly to 1969 and the launch of Apollo 11. I was surrounded by hundreds of reporters and delegates from around the world gathered to witness the historic event. Friend and foe alike intermingled, all with a common goal, to emotionally push the Saturn into the sky. Old rivalries faded into insignificance. In that brief moment the world was united as one. Was there not a parallel here, all of us with a passion for rocks from space? I think Richard would forgive me for copyright infringements so that those who do not own both publications might understand how meaningful his simple words were to those of us who read them. Watching Richard work side by side with Dorothy who helped him with his books and did such fabulous illustrations for all sorts of publications was a pleasure. I too was fortunate to be able to hunt with Richard along with Jim Kriegh and John Blennert at Gold Basin. A short funny story, Richard set up a telescope one evening at Gold Basin to photograph something special happening in the heavens that night. At 2:30 AM he with great resignation put away all of his equipment asking us why we had not in advance informed him that the airliners flying into and out of Las Vegas every twenty minutes never quit, that they were interfering with his light or other conditions! Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Like everyone else, I am saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Norton. The first meteorite book I read was Rocks from Space. The book was part science and part adventure. I remember reading it and thinking, "Wow, this guy really likes meteorites!" As some list members know, I nearly died two years ago in a horrible automobile accident. As I lay in a hospital bed for over three months, my wife would keep me up-to-date on what was going on the meteorite list. The meteorite community, in comparison with many other disciplines and hobbies, is like a small town and everyone "knows" everyone else. When someone of Richard's stature passes away, it affects us all. I am at this moment looking at a plaque that was sent to me by Maria Haas while I was recovering from my injuries. On it is written, "Get Well Soon, Walter, From Your Meteorite Friends" and below are the names of literally scores of individuals. Third column, fourteenth name down is "O. Richard and Dorothy Norton." With tears in my eyes, Richard I hope you knew in some small way just how much yours and Dorothy's and everyone else's name on that plaque meant (and still means) to me in my recovery. I will remember you not only for your ability to share your knowledge and enthusiasm through your books but also for the intangible but indelible way you helped me through the most difficult time in my life. Since the accident, my memory isn't as good as it used to be. I don't remember reading a message about this on the list. Please someone tell me that somewhere between Mars and Jupiter there is a piece of rock with the name "Norton" attached to it. Richard, you will be missed. Dorothy, my sincerest condolences. May God be with you and the Norton family. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Dear List and Dorothy, I had the honor to visit, talk with both Richard and Dorothy during my many visits to Tucson and in a number of emails. Richard always had time for anyone interested in our shared hobby of meteorites. Even those just starting out. I always viewed Richard as the modern day Nininger of our time, doing more for the hobby than anyone that I can think of. Especially through his books on the subject. He will live on in those books and in our hearts and minds and the knowledge that we now hold due to much of his effort. The Nortons were more than just part of our community but more like the respected mom and dad that I and many others looked up to and set a standard for true learning and knowledge of our shared hobby. Always kind, always helpful and always expanding my knowledge as well as the many others. Like many of you I often suggested the RFS book for people staring out in our hobby. I felt that with this great resource we would have yet another person in and to share this wonderful hobby. Sadly Richard will be missed and as many have said, there will be a very big hole left in our community. Special people like Richard only grace our lives once in a great while. Lets honor him by trying to be even a little helpful as he always was so others can be lead down the interesting meteorite path. My thoughts go out to all the Norton Family and especially Dorothy for her extraordinary kindness. --AL Mitterling __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

One human life might make it 100 years. Richard's didn't make it nearly that far. Thus Murchison is over 45,600,000 human life spans old. That is about the same ratio as there are number of seconds in one year; 31,536,000:1 Days like today remind us that we are all only "temporary curators" of the meteorites we briefly possess. Even the oldest of our great collecting institutions have barely held their collections for more than two centuries. Thus, even our so called "permanent collections" have only held these treasures for 1/22,800,000 of their existence. Life is just a flicker in comparison. Richard was a great example to all of us that we have an obligation to make our impact on our world while we each have a chance. And his early passing is a reminder to the rest of us that we need to take time occasionally to stop and appreciate each other's contributions along the way. Richard himself was an example of both those things we are reminded of. Brend brought up for us today of what Richard wrote in a METEORITE article in 2001: NORTON O.R. (2001) Centerpiece: Kapoeta - A Howardite Extraordinaire (Meteorite, May 2001, Vol. 7, No. 2, pp. 22-24): "I knew it was different when I first laid eyes on it. Even without magni- fication I could see a clast-like feature with a structure I had not seen before in any meteorite, much less in a howardite." Above, in just one simple sentence, Richard was extending credit out not just to me, but to Dr. King and even to the collecting community at large via the Tucson Show. He didn't have to include that sentence at all in that paragraph, but he did. In a gentlemanly way, he was recognizing others' contributions to his amazing discovery he was writing about. Of course virtually all of Richard's books (and other writings) extended credit and recognition to others as well, in many different ways. Maybe in honor of Richard's contribution into all of our lives, over the next 31,536,000 seconds, we can all try to take just one step closer to being more like Richard. If we do, this list, the meteorite community

Hi List, Just a thought here, in honor of Mr. Norton - I just noticed that Mr. Norton does not have a wikipedia entry, nor does his book Rocks from Space. I think this is a major oversight - Mr. Norton's contributions surely merit a complete entry in Wikipedia. Is there someone here on the list who is fluent with the workings of Wikipedia? Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Bernd and all, I just sold a little piece of Murchison today on Ebay. Just another day in the life of a meteorite dealer. However, this very rock (like many of the other meteorites we have) is often mentioned as being 4.56 Billion years old. During the 2000 Tucson show Steve Arnold was selling thin sections from the Elbert A. King collection. One in particular from the Kapoeta howardite caught my attention. If we do, this list, the meteorite community, and the world in general will be a much nicer place to hang out. I am going to start: I want to extend an genuine thanks to everyone that makes positive contributions on this list. One of my friends in a private correspondence today mentioned in reference to Richards passing that it was "very sad to have lost one of the good guys." In spite of some riff-raff that shows up here on the list occasionally, we do have some really good guys (and gals) here on the list. "Thanks" to all of you good guys for contributing and making a difference! Steve Arnold . In a message dated 5/27/2009 3:56:00 P.M. Central Daylight Time, bernd.pa...@paulinet.de writes: "A memory that pops into my mind just now is of a meeting with Richard and Dorothy over lunch in Tucson, one year. [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Hello Dorothy, It is a shock Richard was one of the most respected people in the meteorite community. I will treasure the signed copy of "Rocks from Space" that I read 3 times and The Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites that is a master piece. We will miss him and his work, I will never forget him. With Warm Respects, Tim Heitz Hello List-Members, Late last night I received a very sad email from Dorothy Norton. Richard Norton passed away last week, after a long illness. I had known fot quite some time that Richard was in poor health, still the news of his death came as a shock. Last time I called Dorothy, I heard piano playing in the background, Chopin and very good, I thought it was a CD playing or the radio, but Dorothy told me it was Richard, and we stopped a moment to listen, it was beautiful, I had no idea Richard was such a virtuoso. I had met Richard and Dorothy several years ago in Tucson, Thanks to Twink. I was very much a new comer then , and I found Richard to be bright, friendly, funny and so approchable. I still remember showing him a slice of Tafassasset, he looked at it with his loupe for quite a while, then told me that this meteorite left him speechless. Dorothy laughed, apparently Richard was rarely speechless. And now there is that great big hole in the middle of the Meteorite Community. Please read the obituary written by Dorothy and Joel Schiff: http://www.impactika.com/rnorton.doc I do know that Dorothy reads the List, so feel free to send her a message this way. With deep sadness we received your message of Richard's passing away. Words cannot describe the sorrow, all of us feel. But our thoughts go out to Dorothy, and may the Lord comfort her in this hard time of such an enormous loss. What a pioneer Richard was! Dear Dorothy My very first time at the Tucson show back in 2001 was when I met you and Richard at the auction. I already had a R.F.S. softcover at home, but just had to have a hardcover. You both signed it, and Richard wrote this after we had a few words: "Yet another RFS. Meteorites are 'catching' aren't they! Enjoy!" I will never forget you both. Hello All, Should be in bed by now because it's 01:04 hrs our time but a lot of things are still crossing my mind: memories, words, emails. Monday, 27 Aug 2001, Jim Kriegh wrote: "I also wanted to again extend the invitation to both of you to stay at my house if you decide you could make it to the Tucson Gem and Mineral show next year." Alas, it never happened! Friday, December 24, 2004, the Nortons wrote: "Won't you PLEASE come to Tucson some year??? (It will be a life-altering experience!)" Alas, it never happened! We had booked our flight to Tucson for the 2008 show, Twink had a room reserved for us but my Pauline's doctor advised against such a flight to Tucson because of her heart problems and the stroke she suffered ten years ago. It would really have been a "life-altering experience" but I hope that both Jim and Richard (and Darryl Futrell too) understand that this would have been too high a risk for my Pauline. [meteorite-list] Richard Norton, one of Meteoritics Best Friends
I am shocked and saddened on hearing the news of Richard Norton's passing. We, in our small community, were so blessed to have Richard as one of our standard bearers during the last couple of decades. His contribution cannot be measured. A memory that pops into my mind just now is of a meeting with Richard and Dorothy over lunch in Tucson, one year. Richard wanted to see what I had in the way of thin sections when I pulled out 6 Kapoeta thin sections I had from the King Collection. He was beside himself as he was on a budget and yet he wanted to buy more than just one of them. He held one of them up and referring to specimen being a Howardite, and said almost in amazement "This one slide holds a complete rock collection on it!" As I recall, he settled on buying 3 of the them. Normally I leave after making a sale to someone glad that I made some money. But I left that day with the pride swelling in my heart that I could bring something special to Richard, with all his experience and expertise, that he genuinely appreciated. His smile beaming out from under his eye loop, while examinating a new meteorite someone just handed to him (whether at Jim and Twink's party, or in the corner at one of Blood's Auctions, or at one of the many dealer's rooms in Tucson) will be the image I will forever hold in my mind of him. His passion for meteorites will forever be with us in his writings. His passion for meteorite fanatics will forever be with us in our memories. To Dorothy, I offer you my sincere condolences and my genuine thanks to you for sharing Richard with all of us. Steve Arnold **We found the real ‘Hotel California’ and the ‘Seinfeld’ diner. How terribly sad, this is shocking news. One of the few grandmasters and true inspirers of this community is gone. What a great loss. On occasion of his last publication I had the pleasure to correspond with Dorothy, I felt privileged to contribute the cover photo to Richard's Field Guide. A month ago I last exchanged e-mails with Dorothy and I caught myself thinking, 'what book are they about to write next?'. There would have been so much more Richard had to share. I always admired his great talent to unfold complex matters nonchalantly in simple words and I very much appreciated his way of promoting the cooperation of science and amateurs to the benefit of both. He leaves a great gap with no one in sight to fill it. He will be missed dearly. My thoughs and best wishes are with his family. We've all lost an amazing friend and wonderful writer that inspired many thousands of us (to hunt, write and spread the knowledge) with his book "Rocks from Space" Last year Dorothy sent me a very nice email telling me how both her and Richard enjoyed my articles and videos. It meant more than any other compliment I've ever received from anyone. She said, "We love what you're doing and can't wait to see what's next." Richard, thanks for the guidance and inspiration. Dorothy, I'm profoundly sorry. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Oh my god! This is terrible news. Just this morning I recommended "Rocks from Space" (yet again) to one of my customers. Richard was a major inspiration to me, both in my science writing and in furthering my personal interest in meteorites. Back in the day "Rocks from Space" was the only comprehensive book readily available to the non-academic meteorite enthusiast and I pored over every word of it. I was so thrilled and amazed that there even WAS such a book in existence, and that other collectors were interested in, and writing about, meteorites. Richard was the foremost popular writer in the field of meteoritics and his later books built on the great foundation of "RFS." It was a real privilege to have a couple of our photos included in the excellent "Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites." Richard was one of the driving forces behind "Meteorite" magazine for many years, and we worked on the "World of Meteorites from A to Z" poster together. His contributions to both the hobby and the science of meteorites are incalculable. I so enjoyed many social times with Richard an Dorothy at the gem shows, over the years. This is an enormous loss to the community, and my sincere condolences to Dorothy -- a fine lady and a talented illustrator who worked closely with Richard on those wonderful publications. Very sad news indeed. My first book on meteorites was one he wrote and I must say it peaked my interest even more then it already was. Its nice to think that many people for many years to come will still be able to learn from him by the great books he wrote.
