Re: [meteorite-list] Divining and dowsing-a question

2010-10-14 Thread Stuart McDaniel
OK, I worked for Duke Energy for several years, and now work for the city.
My father retired after 28 years with Duke Energy as a lineman supervisor
and I can tell you NOT ONCE have I ever or did I ever see anyone using
clothes hangers to locate thousands and thousands of dollars of buried
cable. They ALWAYS preferred 99.% accurate electronics made specifically
to locate cables and utility lines, not to mention the liability involved in
a "chance" encounter with someone's million dollar fiber-optic cable with
the potential to cause millions of dollars damage if cut!!

Dowsing/divining is BS!!!

I'm somewhat surprised that the Met-List doesn't have at least one or two
other folks on it that work or have worked in one of the utility
businesses dealing with underground utilities or for that matter someone
in the landscaping business. If they are on the List, they are sure
being kind of quiet. What ever name you want to put on using the rods,
divining, dowsing, who cares, they are used quite a bit in both types of
businesses. I have even seen municipal workers using them to locate
their own stuff underground. Wow, imagine that, sure a lot of good folks
out there using bullshit to maintain your underground utilities. Someone
aught to clue 'em in, eh? Just be prepared anyone doing the cluing, you
might want to back up a bit when you tell them that their efforts to keep
from hitting your power, water, sewer or whatever prior to excavation is
nothing more than bullshit. IMHO

Without weighing in one way or the other on the merits:

You would be astounded by the number of well drillers (who ARE listed in
the Yellow Pages) who carry a set of dowsing rods in their trucks.

2010-10-14 Thread Or
Really not much to do with meteoritics but for those interested TAM
(The Amazing Meeting) 8 will be held in Vegas on July 8-10 at the
South Point Hotel and Casino. Richard Dawkins, James Randi, Phil
Plait , Michael Shermer, Paul Kurtz ,Adam Savage and many more will be
in attendance. This should be one of the best yet. Go to

Re: [meteorite-list] Divining and dowsing-a question

2010-10-14 Thread Mark Ford
Well said that man.

I recall a few years ago when BIMS did a meteorite exhibition, one of
the things we had on the stand was a classic meteorwrong (a piece of
weathered marcasite), it was in front of a bunch of real meteorites. A
women came up to the stand wearing various large beads around her neck,
and said she was interested in 'crystal healing'. She picked up the
nearest rock which unknown to her was the Marcasite!, and she said, wow
I can really feel the energy coming off this meteorite, they are much
more powerful than normal rocks you can always tell... this says it all
imho!!

Without getting too deeply into word origins - divining means to
prophesy the
future - from God's lips to mine ears - and few dowsers claim to be so
well
connected - so 'divining rods' seems quite the misnomer -

Between those going back and forth as to whether a given set of
experiments was
'properly done' (which, among the lay, in my experience tends to mean
'giving
the results I like'), there seems to be an issue about the 'science' and
'scientists' who may or may not know anything about the field of
dowsing,

I would like to pose the following, non-scientific question:

If dowsing actually works, as claimed by some, why then can I not find a
entry
for dowsing services in the Yellow Pages? Don't you think, that if this
really
worked, there would be a great demand for these highly specialized
persons,
leading to a well-regulated, credentialled and well-paid guild? I mean,
that's
what has happened with every other skill that works...

Just sayin'
