Why does GENERIC kernel for OpenBSD 4.8 and 4.9 not support software RAID

2011-05-04 Thread Nico Kadel-Garcia
I've been using the very helpful notes at
http://www.eclectica.ca/howto/openbsd-software-raid-howto.php, which
works, but does document needing to build a new kernel to enable
software RAID. (I included GENERIC.MP in my GENERIC.MPRAID
configuration: it's a multi-core machine.) But I had a fascinating
chat with another engineer, who I suspect has worked more with OpenBSD
than I have, who is very surprised at this requirement. He pointed out
that GENERIC is normally the "kitchen sink" kernel, with everything
possible enabled.

I've checked the source, and I see where the RAID is disabled in the
GENERIC kernel, but would like to know why. Is there a significant
performance or reliability risk with that feature enabled? I've not
found anything in the archives that explains this, although it's
*awfully* hard to find useful information with such generic keywords
as "software RAID".

they are not helpful, they are 100% obsolete.

you want softraid(4), which is, surprise! in GENERIC.

Issue after changing IP address of master and backup firewall

2011-05-04 Thread James Chase

Hi,

I recently upgraded to 4.9 and everything seemed OK between my master
and backup firewalls setup with CARP and state sharing. The firewalls
were setup strange, the backup had the internal IP of .25 and the master
had .26. I wanted to swap this so that the master firewall IP would be
in numerical order, so I changed the hostname.x file and rebooted them
both at the same time.

After that I had continuous issues with the backup firewall. It just
kept restarting, so I switched the IP's back. The problem continued, and
I found that it would only boot without crashing if I let it boot with
the network cables unplugged and then plugged them in after it was up.
However, trying to connect to that firewall with SSH causes the system
to crash immediately (it often makes a click sound right when you do it
and then hard reboots). It seemed like it functioned when I tested the
carp failover though!

I brought the firewall home and it works fine away from that network.
The crash dumps don't appear to be understandable by the everyday man.
Is there some sort of disk caching or other area that could cause the IP
change to have created a problem? I only changed the hostname file for
the interfaces I wanted to swap (internal interface and the pfsync
interface) so I'm not sure where the problem would be.

The one of the many benefits of OpenBSD is its superb documentation
especially when comparing with lack of that in Linux and other systems
which tries to supply that by posts around Internet which are outdated
and mostly wrong.

So see http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq14.html#RAID

Please pkg_add usbutil, then identify the relevant /dev/usbX controller

this mode of tethering could do the same, we may be able to identify
a suitable class id we can match on instead.

Is this sufficient?

hmm, not sure.. from what I was reading there should be some
communications device class interface showing up and here's there's
just mass-storage. is there some different mode you need to select
on the phone to use tethering? (I haven't used any android phone).

pfsync bulk transfer performance

2011-05-04 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis
Hi,

I'd like to ask if it's normal for pfsync bulk transfer to take 5-15
minutes to end for 60k states.

pfsync is on a dedicated gigabit interface on both firewalls.

May 4 17:59:35 fw1 /bsd: carp: pfsync0 demoted group carp by 1 to 131
(pfsync bulk start)
May 4 17:59:35 fw1 /bsd: carp: pfsync0 demoted group pfsync by 1 to 1
(pfsync bulk start)
May 4 18:13:47 fw1 /bsd: carp: pfsync0 demoted group carp by -1 to 0
(pfsync bulk done)
May 4 18:13:47 fw1 /bsd: carp: pfsync0 demoted group pfsync by -1 to 0
(pfsync bulk done)

Stats on this interface show 967 pkts/sec1421128 bytes/sec
Iperf gives me 850Mbps from fw2 to fw1

fw1 is -current, fw2 is 4.9 -stable (kudos for another excellent release!)

This is probably the first attempt failing because the interface is not yet
configured. So the first attempt times out and another one is done after a
while,

This is not the case, cause I use that interface to ssh from one machine
to the other. Actually is the first interface being up and usable.

I also see the pfsync traffic all that minutes. Usually it takes 5
minutes (which seems a lot). Today it got 15.

I don't know what destroyed means (blank?). I have a very old laptop.

If I do

 wsfontload -h 8 -e ibm /usr/share/misc/pcvtfonts/vt220l.808
 wsconscfg -dF 5
 wsconscfg -t 80x50 5

I get white lines filling the screen.

but if I do

 wsfontload -h 8 -e ibm /usr/share/misc/pcvtfonts/vt220l.808
 wsconscfg -dF 5
 wsconscfg -t 80x50 5
 wsfontload -h 8 -e ibm /usr/share/misc/pcvtfonts/vt220l.808

It works perfect. I always thought this looked too squashed with the 80
column limit and I'd have to spend ages hunting font files but on this
old laptop with display set to expand in the bios, it looks great :-).

ttyC0 looks like it's in Grandad mode though.

Graphics tablet use with OpenBSD?

2011-05-04 Thread ropers
Hiya,
I'm considering whether to try to get a graphics/pen tablet for
GIMP/graphics design and stuff.

Are there any OpenBSD users out there who currently use a graphics
tablet with OpenBSD?

These days, does support for these require custom drivers at all? Are
they basically just pointing devices? Are they supported by uhid(4)?
I've never owned a graphics tablet before, but I gather some Wacom or
other brand tablets/pens have eraser buttons -- which I suspect would
require a special driver, wouldn't it?

I thus far only run i386 OpenBSD, and I've only checked
http://openbsd.org/i386.html#hardware , which doesn't mention graphics
tablets specifically. If they're not presently supported (anymore),
then that would also be good to know -- I'm just asking whether anyone
knows more.

Grepping the archives, I found this: http://mongers.org/openbsd/graphire4
However, it dates back to 2005 and refers to the usbtablet(4) driver
which disappeared between OpenBSD 4.3 and 4.4:
http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=usbtablet&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=OpenBSD+4.3&arch=i386&format=html
http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=usbtablet&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=OpenBSD+4.4&arch=i386&format=html

I also found this info
, but
apparently it pertains to a specific laptop, so I'm not sure how much
of that is generalizable, or where to find further info.

If on the other hand someone did know how to currently get graphics
tablets to work, and maybe even could recommend a (preferably very)
inexpensive (but not shite) device that works well with OpenBSD, that
would be super grand.

Many thanks in advance,
--ropers

Not "everything possible"; rather "everything we expect to
work reasonably well".

Without the information that's in them, nobody is going to be
able to even guess what might be wrong.

Particularly important:-
- any panic or fault message,
- output from 'trace' and 'ps' commands, probably also 'sh reg'
- at what point does it crash? what is displayed on screen
before any panic/fault message?

It's not disk caching.

My thanks to Joel, Jordan, Marco, and the rest of the team developing this.

I use RAIDFrame too, but it was a mistake; I had no idea RAIDFrame was
no longer maintained and had no idea of the existence of softraid when I
installed and implemented 4.6/4.7 machines over the last year or so.

I hadn't used OpenBSD since 3.x days but I knew I needed it for some
routing at work. I also knew I needed some software RAID. Almost every
result from Googling something along the lines of "installing OpenBSD
onto a software RAID" leads to a RAIDFrame guide like the one at
http://www.eclectica.ca/howto/openbsd-software-raid-howto.php

I'm excited to hear softraid is coming along, and remember reading that
support for booting off of one was recently committed. The work done on
softraid is very appreciated and I look forward to seeing more of it
committed, but the reality is there is a significant split regarding
software RAID in OpenBSD. I bet I'm not the only person using RAIDFrame
close to production without realizing it's not even maintained code.

I think this is mainly due to the fact that softraid can't be used for
the root partition (or booted off of, for now). This leads everyone to
follow RAIDFrame guides to install OpenBSD onto software RAID1, but
nobody bothers to mention that RAIDFrame isn't actually maintained anymore.

And I have a feeling it's why my routers crash once every few months or
so with some odd, sd0/sd1 related FIFO errors (using SSDs too...). I'm
currently pulling RAIDFrame out of various routers and not using any
RAID at all anymore -- CARP + pfsync + duplicate hardware is enough for
what these routers do.

In no way am I blaming anyone here -- it's obviously my fault that I
didn't read the 4.7 FAQ closer and learn about softraid -- but I think
large amounts of people are being lead to RAIDFrame via Google without
fully realizing what they are using or why they might be making a bad
decision.

Along the line of: "Why tf doesn't my root-partition change often
enough, so that i am not ok by simply using ALTROOT? Didn't expect me
to read the afterboot manpage as i was prompted, didn't you?"

(Not addressing you personally, just picking up the vibe.)

if "it's not in GENERIC" is not a strong enough hint, I dunno.
