To clarify, with vga repost disabled, everything else including wireless
(wpi) resumes just fine. As I don't use text consoles or ethernet very
often I suspend and resume a lot and have no issues.

I have a diff somewhere that adds a machdep.vgarepost sysctl, I should
dig it out after tree unlock to see if it's of any interest.

For me the "repost all ati video" change in vga_pci.c broke resume with
similar symptoms. You could do a simple test to see if this affects you
too. In sys/dev/pci/vga_pci.c comment out the relevant lines:

// { /* All ATI video until further notice */
// {   PCI_VENDOR_ATI, 0x,
// 0x, 0x },
// {   0x, 0x, 0x, 0x}, 1, 0
// },

Build a kernel and see if resume gets any further.

There are other resume related problems on my Stinkpad Z61M (console is
blank after resume and bge0 can no longer get a link) but at least the
machine and X resume enough to be useful.

There is nothing that kismet_server does with the device that cannot be
replicated with ifconfig(8) and tcpdump(8). If you can reproduce the
crash with these it would aid debugging.

I don't have a urtw(4) unfortunately.

Why radiotap_bsd_ab? urtw(4) is an 802.11b/g only device and does not
support 802.11a operation. This still doesn't explain your crash as
kismet_server should receive an error and bail.

Can you retest with the correct capture source (radiotap_bsd_b)?

There was no indication the proceeds were going anywhere other than to

I was able to find them on display or a member of staff who had one I

Sure, but the ppp lcp negotiation is only between you and your EVDO
device. It has no correlation to the parameters of the mobile network.

What does at+cgeqreq=? return compared to OSX after it has configured
the device (don't know if this is applicable to EVDO)?

I suspect that unless told otherwise, my devices negotiate a minimal
parameter set for the PDP context, which the vendor drivers override.
Cell congestion is normal here, so achievable throughput is a moving
target. Difficult to compare like for like.

As I understand it, this a characteristic of the underlying (mobile)
network, where the MTU is set by the network operator. Thus it may vary
depending on who you connect to.

I have a couple of Huawei USB HSDPA modems from two UK mobile networks
and see the exact same symptoms. However, sometimes when roaming on a
foreign network the problem did not occur.

> Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Once the ppp link is up set the mtu of the corresponding tun device to
something smaller than the size that fails (900 works here). I can't
find a ppp option that does the same (set mtu etc.) and I'm not clear
why the MTU has to be forced. But it's been working fine like this for
months so I don't worry about it any more :-)

I've not seen good radio performance from the pre-MIMO rals though many
people here have been very happy with them.

MIMO rals have more useful radios IME. Not sure about miniPCI but RT28xx
has been good here.

Depends what you expect. Makes a terrific media store for me with the one
caveat that it can't sustain writes to NFS fast enough for DVB recording.
Playback is fine. Audio (at high bit rates) presents no problems at all.

Typically, I see roughly similar to:

$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/nfs/sh/tv/testfile bs=1M count=100
100+0 records in
100+0 records out
104857600 bytes (105 MB) copied, 169.636 seconds, 618 kB/s

$ dd if=/nfs/sh/tv/testfile of=/dev/null bs=1M
100+0 records in
100+0 records out
104857600 bytes (105 MB) copied, 41.8412 seconds, 2.5 MB/s

I have been using sk(4) as my Gigabit card of choice with great success for
some time now. In fact, I don't bother looking for anything else. I pump lots
of Gigs through them daily with never a hitch, on old PIII junkware PC's.

There are probably alternatives with better maximum performance, I've never
needed to find out. The fact that they cost new about the same as two packs
of cigarettes (in the UK) is a pretty convincing bonus.

Re: Kismet - Propably problems with ath0 (IBM brand)?

2006-10-13 Thread pedro la peu
> Yes this is a problem with kismet (even the current svn snapshot).

Maybe, it depends how you look at it.

Ath(4) devices have problems (partly) because Kismet configures net80211 based
capture sources to IFM_AUTO on OpenBSD. Only ath(4) has a problem with this,
IFM_AUTO is the correct way to go.

There are a lot of things on my list that I would like to do to Kismet before
Kili updates the port, but as he knows I have very little time. Adding ugly
workarounds for hardware made by vendors that belligerently refuse to release
docs to the open source community is not one of them.

The real problem here is that you chose Atheros. Don't blame Kismet.

A load of these were donated to a charity I assist. It appears that they are
actually Silan Micro-Electronics SC92031 chips. The dodgy PCI ID's known to
me thus far are:

vendor 0x1904 product 0x2031
vendor 0x1904 product 0x8139

(the latter is surely a joke?)

I haven't had time to investigate much beyond reading the (awful) Silan
provided Linux 2.4.x driver nor so far manage to tweak rl(4), vr(4) or de(4)
enough to make them attach.

Unless there is better info on this chip (rather than net rumours about what
it was based on) it seems likely to remain an unsupported fake.

Severe performance problem - i386 snapshot bsd.mp on Thinkpad Z61m

2006-09-10 Thread pedro la peu
I have a Thinkpad Z61m on loan with the 1st Sept i386 snapshot installed.
I see a huge performance penalty with the multiprocessor kernel. The system
is as installed, no mk.conf etc.

An example, 'time make bsd' with mp and up kernel.
mp kernel:
41m36s real 4m12.26s user 38m50.02s system
up kernel:
4m10.02s real 3m43.74s user 0m24.26s system

Top confirmed this:
CPU0 states: 8.8% user, 0.0% nice, 89.6% system, 0.0% interrupt, 1.6% idle
CPU1 states: 0.0% user, 0.0% nice, 0.0% system, 0.0% interrupt, 100% idle

Here are various vmstat results while the compile is running and a dmesg
from both kernels. Maybe irq0/ipi looks suspicious? I don't know.

I had to hack on radeon(4) in X.Org 6.8.2 to add support for the GPU

3.9 (X.Org 6.9.0) works fine with the XPRESS 200 chipset. Have you

Don't use wicontrol at all, you don't need it. If you really believe you must,
use it BEFORE ifconfig like it tells you in the wi(4) man page.

Don't force the rate (to DS11) - it is counter productive on an AP.

Really? My first time with this chipset was in April [1] when it worked but
only as a bunch of "generic" or unconfigured devices.

Since then I have seen (and participated in) a complete change, now they
[2] [3] work so well I use them in production and as my primary workstation.

Some suggestions:

1. Get the latest BIOS update, if you haven't already.

2. Install the latest snapshot, things have progressed since 3.8.

See the following, the first is from a machine I have in production
(Sempron/socket754 - one of several) the second is my primary workstation
(AMD64/socket939). I couldn't be happier with them. Fast/stable.

Tcpdump is not your friend here.

I suspect the problem lies in a crucial file you did not tell us anything
about, your hostname.wi0. Use this:

inet 192.168.1.42 255.255.255.0 NONE nwid kirknet mediaopt hostap

(also, don't use non-alphanumeric characters in your nwid)

Restart the machine and if your clients still can't connect put the wireless
interface into debug mode:

ifconfig wi0 debug

And send us the wi driver's debug output, your hostname.wi0, and a full dmesg
in addition to wicontrol and ifconfig output.

Perhaps in the unusual case where all it's clients are similarly well endowed.
An AP with the best receive sensitivity (and a well chosen antennae) will
provide the best range for normal clients.

There are cards that might meet your criteria. Ath(4) have very good receive
sensitivity but I have not yet seen 11g hostap work. You could settle for 11b
and hope the situation improves. Ral(4) have awful receive sensitivity but do
11g hostap really well.

If you need 11g hostap and more range than a ral(4) can provide you could add
more AP's and read up on hostapd(8).

But then it can't function as a bridge, only hostap mode can do that. I
suspect hostap mode failed was because you used 'wicontrol -e1' after you had
already enabled WEP with 'ifconfig nwkey '. Don't do that.

Always do any wicontrol stuff first, then ifconfig. Don't fiddle with any
settings you don't need to. Don't force encryption on with wicontrol after
you have already enabled it with ifconfig nwkey .

Why are you using !ifconfig [...] in your hostname.if(5) file? It's not needed
(unless you are not using the default system scripts in /etc, in which case
you should have said so).

Try:

!wicontrol \$if -f3
mediaopt hostap nwid test2 nwkey 0x up
