I responded to Michael - forgetting to cc the list - asking whether or not he actually got into the installer without the boot sequence hanging (using Boot Camp and the partition for Windows). I was able to also use Parellels also for installing OpenBSD, but I was also able to do the same with QemuX and VirtualPC (on the ppc equipment) - so imho, this is no great feat. I want to see whether or not OpenBSD can run natively on Apple's Intel stuff (albeit w/ reservations because Apple doesn't seem to care to help in providing docs, donations, etc...) Sierra AirCard 580 (SprintPCS/Verizon Card) - Only recognized as a usb
I thought I had seen info in the archives on this one, but it ends up that it had to do with a Novatel Wireless card under 3.5/3.6. I've got a new Sierra AirCard 580 (CDMA2k & EV-DO) and wanted to know if anyone has any pointers on getting this up and running. The card is recognized in my X40 (dmesg below), but it is only seen as a usb type hub. I know when inserted into a Windows machine, it is recognized as such but below the hub sits the communications device. I'm clueless as to what to do to see if I can get this thing working as a serial device like my Merlin C201 works. dmesg: OpenBSD 3.7-current (GENERIC) #0: Sat Jul 30 22:05:42 CDT 2005 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC cpu0: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1200MHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 598 MHz cpu0: FPU,V86,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,MCE,CX8,APIC,SEP,MTRR,PGE,MCA,CMOV,PAT,CFLUSH,ACPI,MMX,FXSR,SSE,SSE2,TM,SBF,EST,TM2 cpu0: Enhanced SpeedStep 600 MHz (956 mV): speeds: 1200, 1100, 1000, 900, 800, 600 MHz real mem = 526884864 (514536K) avail mem = 473870336 (462764K) using 4278 buffers containing 26447872 bytes (25828K) of memory mainbus0 (root) bios0 at mainbus0: AT/286+(84) BIOS, date 10/13/04, BIOS32 rev. 0 @ 0xfd740 apm0 at bios0: Power Management spec V1.2 apm0: battery life expectancy 50% apm0: AC off, battery charge high, estimated 2:02 hours apm0: flags 30102 dobusy 0 doidle 1 pcibios0 at bios0: rev 2.1 @ 0xfd6d0/0x930 pcibios0: PCI IRQ Routing Table rev 1.0 @ 0xfdeb0/256 (14 entries) pcibios0: PCI Interrupt Router at 000:31:0 ("Intel 82371FB ISA" rev 0x00) pcibios0: PCI bus #2 is the last bus bios0: ROM list: 0xc/0xc800! 0xcc800/0x1000 0xcd800/0x1000 0xdc000/0x4000! 0xe/0x1 cpu0 at mainbus0 pci0 at mainbus0 bus 0: configuration mode 1 (no bios) pchb0 at pci0 dev 0 function 0 "Intel 82852GM Hub-PCI" rev 0x02 "Intel 82852GM Memory" rev 0x02 at pci0 dev 0 function 1 not configured "Intel 82852GM Configuration" rev 0x02 at pci0 dev 0 function 3 not configured vga1 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 "Intel 82852GM AGP" rev 0x02: aperture at 0xe000, size 0x800 wsdisplay0 at vga1 mux 1: console (80x25, vt100 emulation) wsdisplay0: screen 1-5 added (80x25, vt100 emulation) "Intel 82852GM AGP" rev 0x02 at pci0 dev 2 function 1 not configured uhci0 at pci0 dev 29 function 0 "Intel 82801DB USB" rev 0x01: irq 11 usb0 at uhci0: USB revision 1.0 uhub0 at usb0 uhub0: Intel UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub0: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered uhci1 at pci0 dev 29 function 1 "Intel 82801DB USB" rev 0x01: irq 11 usb1 at uhci1: USB revision 1.0 uhub1 at usb1 uhub1: Intel UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub1: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered uhci2 at pci0 dev 29 function 2 "Intel 82801DB USB" rev 0x01: irq 11 usb2 at uhci2: USB revision 1.0 uhub2 at usb2 uhub2: Intel UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub2: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered ehci0 at pci0 dev 29 function 7 "Intel 82801DB USB" rev 0x01: irq 11 usb3 at ehci0: USB revision 2.0 uhub3 at usb3 uhub3: Intel EHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 2.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub3: 6 ports with 6 removable, self powered ppb0 at pci0 dev 30 function 0 "Intel 82801BAM Hub-to-PCI" rev 0x81 pci1 at ppb0 bus 1 cbb0 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 "Ricoh 5C476 CardBus" rev 0x8d: irq 11 vendor "Ricoh", unknown product 0x0822 (class system unknown subclass 0x05, rev 0x13) at pci1 dev 0 function 1 not configured em0 at pci1 dev 1 function 0 "Intel PRO/1000MT Mobile (82541GI)" rev 0x00: irq 11, address: 00:0a:e4:2d:9a:ad ath0 at pci1 dev 2 function 0 "Atheros AR5212" rev 0x01: irq 11 ath0: AR5212 5.9 phy 4.3 rf2112 4.6, WOR4W, address 00:0e:9b:6f:4a:b0 cardslot0 at cbb0 slot 0 flags 0 cardbus0 at cardslot0: bus 2 device 0 cacheline 0x0, lattimer 0xb0 pcmcia0 at cardslot0 ichpcib0 at pci0 dev 31 function 0 "Intel 82801DBM LPC" rev 0x01 pciide0 at pci0 dev 31 function 1 "Intel 82801DBM IDE" rev 0x01: DMA, channel 0 configured to compatibility, channel 1 configured to compatibility wd0 at pciide0 channel 0 drive 0: wd0: 16-sector PIO, LBA, 38154MB, 78140160 sectors wd0(pciide0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 5 pciide0: channel 1 disabled (no drives) "Intel 82801DB SMBus" rev 0x01 at pci0 dev 31 function 3 not configured auich0 at pci0 dev 31 function 5 "Intel 82801DB AC97" rev 0x01: irq 11, ICH4 AC97 ac97: codec id 0x41445374 (Analog Devices AD1981B) ac97: codec features headphone, 20 bit DAC, No 3D Stereo audio0 at auich0 "Intel 82801DB Modem" rev 0x01 at pci0 dev 31 function 6 not configured isa0 at ichpcib0 isadma0 at isa0 pckbc0 at isa0 port 0x60/5 pckbd0 at pckbc0 (kbd slot) pckbc0: using irq 1 for kbd slot wskbd0 at pckbd0: console keyboard, using wsdisplay0 pms0 at pckbc0 (aux slot) pckbc0: using irq 12 for aux slot wsmouse0 at pms0 mux 0 pcppi0 at isa0 port 0x61 midi0 at pcppi0: spkr0 at pcppi0 sysbeep0 at pcppi0 npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: using exception 16 biomask effd netmask effd ttymask pctr:

I used wicontrol as I tried to get the card working and played around. I just posted it, because it's behaviour changed from 3.7 to current. I used the instructions from `man ath` for my configuration in the first place. My /etc/hostname.ath is from `man ath` with just the nwid changed. You need to start providing complete information each time you try something new. Show us exactly what hostname.if is and the ifconfig -a info each time you post back that it isn't working. Also is it /etc/hostname.ath or /etc/hostname.ath0? Do you see the difference? But, before you muck around more with hostname.if, try the example from "man ath": # ifconfig ath0 -bssid -chan media autoselect nwid "" -nwkey -powersave then: # ifconfig ath0 inet 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 NONE media autoselect mediaopt hostap nwid my_net chan 11 you have to add "ifconfig ath0" (for obvious reasons) to the example in the man page. I have done this a number of times with the exact same card you have and it has worked every single time. I even changed the nwid from "my_net" to "pigsfly" and it worked fine. You also need to send your ifconfig -a along - you are not doing something correctly or the card is broke or I'm out of my mind... Steve Fettig

Andreas Bihlmaier wrote: Hello, -current did it. Thanks to those who pointed me in that direction. (SO - if you want the ath AR5212 on the x40 - if that's the wifi card it came with - to work "properly" updating to current helps.) Did I miss something important ? What do you mean with working "properly" since I have mine in use right now with 3.7 release. The only thing is that I can only use 802.11b aka 11mbit. Big Question: Are you able to use 11g aka 54mbit in current ? Did you use netboot or a usb device to install openbsd by the way ? (not important I used an usb hd and it worked wonderfull). Greetz, ahb Moin, I couldn't connect to anything (even setting it at 802.11b / 11mbit) - I tried around 40 variations of settings with ifconfig. After updating to current it worked fine - the easy 'dhclient ath0' works like a charm. I'm not sure about speeds, though. All of the networks I use are 802.11g, but because 802.11b devices float in and out, the connection may fall back to b. I rarely transfer files via wifi anyway - i.e. I'm only using it for a 3mbit internet connection - and it always works well. Are you sure you have the AR5212 adapter? It is weird that it would work with you and not me... (Machine build: 2386-8WU) This is also the first OpenBSD w/ GUI/X that I've ever used (I have many "servers," but none with X/xorg), so I'm busy working on learning my way around xorg and not playing too much with the network stuff, since it "just works." I did my install from a usb cd-rw drive and then from the UltraBase (x4) - both also worked flawlessly. I guess in a word, this machine (other than me not working on the Bluetooth - for which I don't have time, yet) is "flawless." I have 6 different laptops I use on a regular basis and that word rarely comes to mind... steve fettig

Greg Mortensen wrote: The native drivers default to cHDLC, so no options are necessary. While fractional T1s don't work right now (it's my current issue with Sangoma), an all channel setup should. You may have to do an explicit "ifconfig san0 up" and wait a little while, though (Look for "Link connected!" in your syslog). My hostname.san0 looks like: inet 64.208.26.234 255.255.255.252 dest 64.208.26.233 hostname.san1 is for my other T1 link - same configuration. I tried the above with and without the dest argument. I also tried ifconfig san0 up (same with san1) and all it got to was "Link connecting..." Unfortunately, I couldn't readily get a hold of anyone at my provider (Global Crossing) - alas, it was 12 am here - so I couldn't see if they were seeing the link come up or not. (BTW, I waited around 5 min. to see a Link Connected message but never got it. Perhaps I didn't wait long enough? That doesn't make sense, though.) (Also note, the firewall was set to pass all and pinging my side of the link did not work. It did not say "host down" it simply lost all packets. tcpdump didn't do me any good either - it only gave me numerical references that I didn't understand. Unfortunately, I was sick and getting pretty tired and had to leave after 2 hrs of trying. Next try I'm going to get complete dmesg, logs and anything else I can get my hands on...) Any more ideas?

san Sangoma A102u cHDLC support/help
I've taken a look at a few messages in the archives, but can't make heads or tails as to the current status of setting cHDLC on the A102u. In http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=openbsd-misc&m=110701517800597&w=2 there is mention that in order to use the Sangoma provided drivers, you need to disable san in the kernel before running the package installation. Seeing as I'm running 3.7 on the machine I want to use for our new router, I am having a hard time finding the right info. How do I best go about setting the card to cHDLC (everything else for my T's are standard: B8ZS, ESF, all channels)? It appears that the cards will bring up the T's but I can't pass data or even ping my side of the interface. Anyone using these cards with 3.7 (if not, what are you using) and having luck? steve fettig

I was not happy, however, with the OpenBSD image that freeoszoo.org had - I had problems running pkg_add and a number of other things I wanted to test. Instead of investigating why, I simply did my own fresh install. I have put up a .gz img file of the 4g image at http://anywheretechnology.com/openbsd/openbsd37.img.gz if anyone is interested (it's about 145MB). The password for root is 0b$d (where 0 is a zero). I installed wget before making the compressed image. Otherwise, it is a vanilla 3.7 install. If I can ever take the time to figure out how to set up a torrent, I'll put that up, too. steve P.S. I finally gave up on Virtual PC. I found some work around sites, but to be honest, I don't have time to work on it if it doesn't work "out of the box" and QEMU does the job...

Re: OpenBSD 3.7 in a virtualpc-machine
Thorsten, I've been trying to get 3.7 to run in VirtualPC 7.0.1 on my PowerBook without any success. Right now, I'm actually working on getting 3.6 working so I can upgrade it to 3.7. The problems with 3.7 occur during formatting. I usually have 5 slices set up, / , swap, /tmp, /usr, /home and have tried various sizes. The biggest problem is trying to get a trouble report out of the install because when the machine crashes, I can't see exactly what is going on because it goes by so quickly. I'll let you know if I can get 3.6 to work... at least that would be a start. (Oh, I've tried it on some G5's I have, too, with no luck.) steve Thorsten von Plotho-Kettner wrote: Hi.
