It has, in audiolib.c:1.22, included in mjpegtools-1.6.2.

This is unrelated, it's a warning, not an error. If you see black video,
you either have no input signal (yes, seriously) or your VIA *is* giving
you headaches. The above warning is unrelated.

Did you restart X after adding that? Are the zoran drivers loaded when

lavplay doesn't support write()-based access yet. It's basically a
non-implemented feature request... :-(. It's not hard to implement
(simply copy the read-part, and do s/read/write/ and s/get/set/ and so
on for all the kernel calls), but someone has to actually go and do it.
Then, we can add a --use-write option to lavplay and it'd work.

Read man ppmtoy4m. You'll want image*.ppm. You need to convert the images
to the PPM format using GIMP or ImageMagick's convert or so.

> So then I tried to put together a command for jpeg-yuv, like this

No, it writes a Y4M2 stream to stdout. You create a file by adding
something like yuv2lav to the pipeline:

jpeg2yuv ... image%02d.jpg | yuv2lav -o file.avi ...

Be sure to read the jpeg2yuv and yuv2lav manpage to get better examples.
You'll need some more commandline options to get all of this to work.

As the FAQ mentions, this only works with BTTV-0.9, so you either need to
install a 2.6 kernel or manually install the latest BTTV drivers.

Thanks, I'll take care of sending this upstream. I think that you're
currently required to "sign off" a patch when you sent it over to
maintainers. See e.g. http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS3012318028.html
for details. It's really as simple as including a line
"Signed-off-by: Random J Developer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>" in your patch email.
See http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3180 for details and Linus' initial
email.

See the FAQ. ;). Add 'load "v4l"' to the modules section of your
XF86Config-4 file, restart X (make sure the driver is loaded before
restarting X) and select the video4linux port instead of your video card's
output port (which LVS doesn't want).

You can add loading the v4l module to your XF86Config file. then, add a
"alias char-major-81-0 zr36067" to your /etc/modules.conf, and it'll load
the zr36067 driver as first driver for v4l cards during v4l/X

In the preferences screen, there's an option in the audio section that
says "use read instead of mmap capture mode" or so. Enable that.

You have an "older" DC10, and for those, you have to give a card=X
property to the modprobe/insmod command. In your case, use card=1, that
should work.

So add "options zr36067 card=1" to your /etc/modules.conf, and then run
"modprobe zr36067" (no need to load any of the other modules, they're
automagically loaded now).

I don't mind a small maintainance release in the mean time, don't forget
that release early + often buys you more users.

Then again, I read the bugs as well, and several utilities haven't been
tested too extensively with all chroma subsampling formats yet, so let's
await some more testing before we get too excited.

Be *very* aware that hardware MPEG-2 cards, especially the consumer-level
ones, do not come remotely near the quality of software encoders like
mpeg2enc or ffmpeg's mpeg-2 encoder.

The rest was answered by Stephen but I'll add some small notes:

The DC30+ is fully supported in the current 2.6.x kernels using the
'zr36067.ko' driver. The code in CVS is the same as in the kernel, I just
never release a 0.9.5 so far. I promised to release it at some point in
time, but lack any form of free time right now.

The webpage needs updating, I need to do that while I release 0.9.5.

Aah! ;).

Internal is an internal cable (like the cable between your soundcard and
CD player). It is intended to connect a tuner card such as cheap TV cards
to the capture card so that you have a tuner-capable hardware MJPEG
capture card. It is not intended to send streams from applications and
re-encode on-the-fly (and as Stephen noted, the card doesn't encode to
MPEG-2 or decode DV; it's an MJPEG card only).

No, I've asked for datasheets but got no reply. Development of this card
is completely closed. Pinnacle has never been helpful in driver
development in our project, as opposed to Linux Media Labs (we received
official help and support from them) or Iomega (no official support, but
we had contacts with their engineers).

The issue here is that mjpegtools doesn't provide any way of doing this.
You'll have to dive into libjpeg internals yourself to get this done. It's
not that hard, but it's icky, if you know what I mean. You'll definately
get speed improvements, but there's some small issues:

* you originally proposed to use the top few lines: in 16:9 movies
broadcasted over 4:3 TV, those are always black.
* TV broadcast artifacts can make things 99% black instead of 100% black,
so you'll need tresholds.
* Movie trailers often end up in blackness as well, so be sure to not
fetch those ones. This will be a matter of experimenting, but might be
hard.

So the libjpeg internals are not that hard. You can take an example from
the code in lavtools/jpegutils.[ch] and use that as a base for decoding
only part of the image. I think there's a for() loop somewhere that goes
over each line and decodes it, so that should be easy to do only once
instead of times. :).

Type "modprobe zr36067". If it cannot find the module, enable compilation
of that module in make menuconfig, it's in the same section as the BTTV

Note the "i P", it means that your file is recorded to "i" and then "P"
and only then to "/Data/...". Use "-i P", you probably meant that.

Not exactly. The 'v4l' in your XF86Config loads the XFree86 v4l/Xv module.
This module will provide an Xv-implementation of the v4l overlay via X.
this is a fancy way of doing very simple display of video on-screen
without needing a lot of code. However, your *kernel* needs to *support*
your card before X can *use* the card, so you load both the v4l modules
(videodev.o, v4l2-common.o, etc.) and the driver module (e.g. zr36067.o or
zoran.o, depending on whether you use the CVS driver or the 2.6.x
built-in one). Then, your kernel supports your card and X can use it.

Hope this makes things clear,

Ronald

That means it's trying capture mode rather than overlay. As the FAQ
mentions (or should mention, I might have forgotten to add that question),
it's a hardware thing that can be solved by manual kernel patching only.
But xawtv should really just try overlay, so this shouldn't be a problem.
If you want to give that a shot, try googling for 'bigphysarea patch'.

Are you somehow running this remotely or so?

> May 12 18:19:58 david kernel: DC10plus[0]: VIDIOC_S_FMT -

That means the hardware doesn't support the requested colormode. If you
get the 'buffersize too small', then it did accept the requested (but
unmentioned, because of the success) colormode. Nothing to worry about,
this is how color negotiation between application and driver works.

Can you hexdump the first 1 kB and send it to the list? I need to see the

fourcc in the AVI file to 'MJPG'.

Overlay (using xawtv) is what most people use, I suppose. If that's not an
option (it might increase framedrops), another option is to buy a cheap TV
card, enable the pass_through=1 option in the zr36067.o/zoran.o driver and
loop the TV-out (either S-video or composite) of your Buz to the
composite/S-video input of your cheap TV card. You can then use overlay on
the cheap TV card using something like xawtv -c /dev/video1.

Can you try an old driver version (with a 2.4 kernel) and the new driver
version with both that same 2.4 kernel version and a 2.6 one? Maybe that
shows where the problem is.

If you have too much time and want to investigate further to where exactly
the problem is, you might even want to try multiple kernel versions or
multiple driver versions.

It should be on /dev/video1 then. Check using xawtv -c /dev/video1 or
"export LAV_VIDEO_DEV=/dev/video1" and then record using lavrec (e.g.
lavrec -d2 -ip /tmp/file.avi).

If it's not, check the output of "dmesg" for driver debug messages.

Update kernel (to 2.6.4 or newer) or update driver to current CVS, and the

Look at the actual card; you'll find a TV-in connector (white) on the
hardware (internal). This can be used to attach a tuner output from
(e.g.) a cheap TV card to the input here. By combining those two, you get
tuner capabilities on this card (well, sort of).

You are using a *output Xv port* as input Xv port. The type should read
"video4linux" and should show your DC10+ or other MJPEG card. You probably
need to load the XFree86 X/v4l extension, see the README or FAQ on how to
do that. Make sure yuou load the driver before starting X, else it won't
detect the v4l device.

You probably recompiled your own kernel, installed the modules and then
moved the sources to another location. Just recreate the symlink to point
to the kernel source dir (/usr/src/linux-x.y.z), then it should work.

In the past year, I've experimented (successfully!) with re-writing
headers after every single frame. The reason for that was twofold: first,
I needed a movie format where the index is in the *beginning* of the
frame, and secondly, I needed a movie format that can be read while being
recorded. I ended up using matroska (http://www.matroska.org/), because it
is able to place the index (with fixed size) before the data. The
consequence of that is that I can overwrite the file header + index after
each frame and thereby have the beneifts of MPEG and indexed files
together. Header rewriting is possible for AVI, too, but doesn't get you
anywhere, since the index is missing. You could write the index after the
file data after each frame, but the issue is that if I read the index
and my recorder overwrites it with the next frame, I still get
nowhere. So this is simply not possible. Same for quicktime. The result of
this "hack" was that I can write and read a movie at the same time,
*safely*, and with only three fseeks() (one to the file
table-of-contents, one to the index, which I read, and then - after
parsing the index - one to the actual cluster that corresponds to my
requested timepoint) and one large fread() (the index ;) ), I can seek to
any time point in my movie (even if it's VBR!). This is impossible with
AVI, Quicktime, MPEG or any other format. Not sure about Ogg...

I'm planning to clean up the code I have and submit it (it's lightly based
on lavrec, and I call it "lavrec 2.0") to mjpegtools CVS... I don't have a
timeframe, however, my studies currently tend to eat up all my time...
Might be interesting for all you TiVo lovers. :).

Quicktime shouldn't have that issue, should it?

There's your issue. Version numbering in there is wrong (like RH), so we
use wrong symbols during compiling. I cannot and will not fix that in main

[Mjpeg-users] mjpegtools 1.6.2 released!

2004-02-03 Thread Ronald Bultje
Dear all,

it's my pleasure to announce the official release of mjpegtools 1.6.2.
This version features all your well-known tools (MPEG/DVD encoding,
MJPEG editing/recording, many video filters, etc.) with a shiny new
version number and many new features, bug fixes, improvements and all
other things that make sales managers get into extacy.

This release can be downloaded from the usual locations:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5776. We feature
tarballs, source and x86 binary RPMs. We hope to provide debian packages
within a few days.
The ones paying attention will notice there's also a new version of
libjpegmmx released. This release isn't different from the previous,
except that it decreases the default optimization level to (hopefully)
get rid of all compile errors that we've seen in the past few months.

Please send bug reports to the mjpeg-users mailinglist. If you want to
join development, please subscribe to the developers mailinglist. Last
but not least: enjoy!

Don't add it, I've seen enough changes for now. I've noticed the small
change in the ratecontroller in mpeg2enc - does it require a new RC or

[Mjpeg-users] mplex: Decoder buffer running low: boosting overshoot gain!

2004-01-16 Thread Ronald Bultje
Hi,

well, first "bug" (possibly) from myself ;):

what does the above mean and is it a bad thing? I get it with
high-resolution (640x464, 25fps, 1hr or so) MPEG-1 encoding, even with
the 'new' (old, same as in 1.6.1) rate controller that was supposed to
have been in CVS again since yesterday...

The old (the one that was in CVS since a few weeks ago, but was removed
again a few days ago) rate controller didn't like it either, but bailed
out much faster (after several seconds, this one holds for a few
minutes).

[Mjpeg-users] mjpegtools 1.6.2-RC4 available!

2004-01-16 Thread Ronald Bultje
Dear all,

As of today, release candidate 4 for mjpegtools-1.6.2 (available real
soon now (tm)!) is available at the usual SourceForge sites:

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5776&package_id=5823&release_id=210313

Pending big bugs, we hope to release this as 1.6.2 within a few weeks.

Changes with respect to last version:
* mplex is now a lib
* fixage of pkg-config scripts
* lots of smaller fixes all around (docs, bugs, features)
(I really should have a complete list of the above, but didn't really
feel like digging in the the CVS commit list archives, so I'm just
saying "I don't know". I'll look them up for the final 1.6.2 release. ;)
)

Please test it, report bugs to this list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and let us
know how much you love us.

Happy testing,

Ronald

Sounds somewhat unlikely... But maybe it is. If you think data rate is
the issue, please try a lower -q value (default is 50, try 20 or 30 for

0x00 means 'no error', so it's not really useful. I'd expect a signal

Actually, filesize / muxrate. There is no such thing as 'length' in the
mpeg header (it's streamable), so you just guess. If you open a VBR MPEG
in WMP for the first time, you'll see this too. The second time, the
length will be cached and shown correctly (in WMP, not sure for Xine).

Gentoo uses libtool (for fpic) to compile this code, which is invalid in
1.6.1.91 (the default tarball didn't do this, so gentoo messed this up).
It's fixed in latest CVS, cpu_accel.c can now be compiled with fpic.

Note that the pre-compiled RPMs have all optimizations built-in. So if
you're testing if from-source is faster than RPMs: it's not.

It's indeed mpeg, and a system stream (so a muxed mpeg file, not an
elementary video stream). You need to demux them in some way. I don't
know how to do that with mplayer/ffmpeg. With GStreamer, it's
"gst-launch filesrc location=file.mpg ! mpegdemux .video_00 ! filesink
location=file.m1v". I'm sure Steven knows the proper ffmpeg command, and
others will know the right mplayer command.

No, only on half-size. I'm planning new work in that area once my

The bad thing is that the win32 driver doesn't really perform any
better, so I can't rev. engineer anything. :-(. That'd be a lot easier.

This is because Mandrake patches their kernel with the new i2c stack
which is incompatible with the default one.

That tells me that 'no error occurred'. Fairly weird, it probably just

running lavrec with --file-flush=1 (that flushes data to disk every

Yes, because we use c++. With 1.4, you had to manually add -lstdc++ to
the compile line. You'll understand the portability issues this was
causing (libstdc++ is called something else on other platforms).
libtool-1.5 fixes that.

I'd say so at first sight, but the error is really strange...

Searching on google suggests to try 'make distclean', then remove the
libtool files with 'rm -f ltmain.sh libtool' and then re-run
'libtoolize' (all this in the mjpegtools sourcedir). That re-installs
the libtool files with ones compatible to your system. Then, try
building. If it still fails, also try re-running autogen.sh.

That makes no sense. Are you using the latest update-packages available
for RedHat-7.2? I've successfully compiled this thing under 7.3 with the
latest gcc update from redhat.com on it, and 7.2 should have the same
updates available.

Note that you'll need libtool-1.5. 1.4 isn't enough.

Or add black bars at top/bottom. Both can be done with yuvscaler

You can't, lav2yuv only supports JPEG or DV video with PCM audio. For

Your link to the driver website reads http://mjpeg.sf.net/. However, the
correct link is http://mjpeg.sf.net/driver-zoran/. This is important as
currently, there's no way to access the driver page from the main site.

Apart from that, it looks pretty complete. I hope RedHat (Fedora) & co
will ship 2.6 kernels soon, that way this is all autodetected and most
of such documentation is only needed by the cutting-edge people. ;).

Is this function called often? If not, it can be easily worked around by
creating a linked list of allocated pointers from posix_memalign().
Then, return (ret + 3) &~ 3. In posix_memalign_free, check the given
pointer against each value in the list (listval + 3) &~ 3 and free
listval.

If we don't call this too often, this will have no measurable
performance effects.

[Mjpeg-users] mjpegtools 1.6.2 release candidate 3 online

2003-11-27 Thread Ronald Bultje
Hi all,

as promised, today's the great day that mjpegtools-1.6.1.92 (release
candidate 3) is online. It's basically the same as 1.6.1.91, with some
small changes:

* config.h include reference removed from all installed header files
* long command-line options now work for mplex
* typo fixes

Download location for this release is still on sourceforge:
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5776. There's a
tarall, source RPM and binary RPMs (for x86, built on RedHat-9.0, please
remind me to update to the latest Fedora Core sometime soon) available.
Bug reports and comments can be sent to the mjpeg-users mailinglist. We
hope to re-release this as 1.6.2 within a few days.

Happy testing!

Ronald

I think ffmpeg has a DirectShow filter project somewhere on SF. Their
MPEG decoder should be able to do that, and it's all LGPL.

[Mjpeg-users] mjpegtools-1.6.2 release candidate 2

2003-11-25 Thread Ronald Bultje
Hi all,

As of today, release candidate 2 of mjpegtools-1.6.2 (official version:
1.6.1.91) is available on your local sourceforge mirror. For URLs, see
https://sf.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5776. This release
candidate features an updated yuvdenoise, several bugfixes to mpeg2enc
and the removal of libmovtar (plus a lot of other stuff that I forgot).
Besides that, it's still as nice as mjpegtools-1.6.1.90 (the previous
release candidate).

We've got pre-compiled RPMs for RedHat-9.0 available. I hope to add
Debian (unstable) packages fairly soon.

For bugs, complaints, marriage proposals and other comments, please
email the user list at mjpeg-users (at) lists (dot) sf (dot) net. To
follow development, subscribe to the developer mailing list at
mjpeg-developer (at) lists (dot) sf (dot) net. If we don't hear
(bug-)comments, this release will very likely be promoted to 1.6.2
within a few days or weeks.

Enjoy!

That explains why the driver doesn't load.

Something tells me this is related. ;). Can you try in another computer?
The driver (and its maintainer) is allergic to VIA chipsets.

We're intending to release it soon (see Steven's earlier reply), but -
as with any good software - it'll only be released "when it's ready".

Wink noted again. I was intending to do that shortly after releasing
1.6.1.90, but then both Andrew and Stefan made some large changes to
CVS, so I'm currently holding off until I'm sure that we're back to
"fully stable" again. Stable doesn't only mean that it doesn't crash,
but it means, too, that we've reached a state where the applications are
known to produce results that meet all our standards. And we've set
these pretty high in the past few years, I think.

If people think that yuvdenoise and mpeg2enc are "more than ready" for a
stable release, I'll package a 1.6.1.91... Else, I'll wait a few days
longer. ;).

Before recording, run xawtv, right-click the window and adapt the
brightness, contrast etc. sliders. to automate this, make a script that
calls v4lctl (part of the xawtv package) before running lavrec.

Unless you resample (which is expensive), I'd say no: you hear audio
drops far easier than video drops. If you have a large amount of
inserted frames (several %), your audio card might be giving a complete
different samplerate than what lavrec expects. Try playing with the
--audio-rate=X option, then...

You probably want to try doing "gcc -o $(pkg-config
--cflags --libs mjpegtools) -DHAVE_STDINT_H".

Sysfs (/sys/*) is for non-process procfs-entries (/proc/*). Devfs will
be replaced by something like magicdev, i.e. something that runs in
userspace. Userspace-signalling of new hardware goes via sysfs.

No, RedHat uses the default devfs names. However, due to devfs horror
(that's a pleonasm), /dev/video/ contains other non-v4l video entries,
such as the dxr3 (em8300) and some more. Where's the good old days that
everyone agreed that /dev/dsp was my soundcard? ;). Fortunately, devfs
is now marked obsolete.
