Re: [WikimediaMobile] Prague Pre-Hackathon - registration and travel scholarships open

2017-03-03 Thread Pine W
Hi Josephine,

Thanks for the info.

I wonder if it would make sense to promote the Commons app inside of the
Wikipedia app. That might be particularly beneficial during Wiki Loves
Monuments and other Commons-focused campaigns. However, as Jon pointed out,
there are resource constraints with moderation. Perhaps someday there will
be a combination of AI improvements and human resource capacity
improvements to adequately address the constraints in the moderation queue.

I have a few other questions about your app, but I feel like I've hijacked
this thread so let's have that conversation elsewhere. I'll contact you
off-list.

Regards,

Pine

Re: [WikimediaMobile] Prague Pre-Hackathon - registration and travel scholarships open

2017-03-03 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi Pine,

I agree with the potential benefits, but my personal opinion is that
merging the two apps would require a substantial overhaul of the Commons
app, both in terms of UI design as well as codebase. Linking, if
appropriate, would be an easier way to achieve the benefits of shared user
base, but of course the experience would not be as seamless for users
compared to merging.

Regardless, WMF staff would be better placed than I to answer your
question, I think. If there is a merge, there will probably be some
management/manpower implications, as the Commons app is currently a
community-maintained app, whereas merging would probably mean that
maintenance/upgrades would fall under the responsibility of the WMF mobile
app team?

Cheers.

OK, thanks for the explanation, Jon.

For what it's worth, I've got some activities in my pipeline that I hope
will lead to increases in the number of volunteers on Wikimedia projects
with moderate to high levels of expertise in Wikimedia workflows. Human
resources are a significant constraint on many community and affiliate
tasks, such as image moderation. Perhaps in a few years the HR constraint
will be less of a concern. We'll see.

Thanks again,

Pine

Re: [WikimediaMobile] Prague Pre-Hackathon - registration and travel scholarships open

2017-03-02 Thread Jon Katz
Hi Pine,
That's a great question and one we've thought about a lot on the app
teams. It would obviously increase our image contributions a great deal if
we connected the ease of uploading of the commons app with the user base of
the Wikipedia app. However, given the quality and copyright issues that
arose when we previously made it easier to upload images on the mobile [1],
we want to be very careful about any future efforts and make sure we've
ensured that issues around moderation are taken care of.

In a recent consultation around mobile contributions,
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Reading/Readers_contributions_via_Android,
concerns around moderation were echoed, but uploading nearby images was
still one of the most popular ideas proposed. There is clearly an
opportunity here if we can figure out how to mitigate the moderation issues.

Regardless, given the upcoming structured data on commons
 project, we're
thinking that we want to delay any new asks of the Commons community until
the repercussions of the project are well understood.

Best,

J

Could you elaborate why you're asking? Do you have some potential
improvements in mind, or problems that might get solved by merging?

Thanks,

Hi Josephine,

I'm glad to see that work is continuing on the Commons app. Just wondering,
is there a chance of creating some kind of link between the Commons app and
the Wikipedia app, or maybe even merging them at some point?

Thanks,

Pine

[WikimediaMobile] Prague Pre-Hackathon - registration and travel scholarships open

2017-03-02 Thread Josephine Lim
Hi all,

Wikimedia Czech Republic and I are collaborating to organize a pre-hackathon

in Prague that runs from 12-14 May 2017, a week before the hackathon in
Vienna. There are a few scholarships available that will cover the return
trip to Prague/Vienna, and/or accommodation in Prague during the
pre-hackathon.

The topic of the pre-hackathon will be the improvement of the Wikimedia
Commons Android app ,
with focus on the "Nearby places that need pictures" feature. Further
details are currently still being discussed here
.

If you are interested, please register

as soon as possible and indicate if you would like to apply for a
scholarship in the application form. For any enquiries, feel free to send
me or Vojtech (CC'ed) an email, or post on our GitHub or wiki discussion
page.

Cheers!
