2. GonMad music player is the best and accessible with talkback.

[Mobile.AI] 4 things you didn't know you can do with GPS

2014-10-17 Thread Kannan. C

4 things you didn't know you can do with GPS
GPS, though best known for navigation, can be used for much more.
Depending on who or what you need to locate, there is a combination of
GPS devices and free apps that you can use nowadays.

We show you how GPS technology can help get around common problems:
Keep tabs on family members
2014-10-15 16:38:33.0
There could be several situations in which you need to keep track of
family members or let others know where you are. Life 360, a free app
for Android, iOS and Windows Phone, is a family locator and
communication app.
The idea is that you can place yourself and family members into a
private circle — location sharing can be made automatic too. Plus you
can group chat with all members orjust one. You can also try a similar
free app called Cabin (Android iOS) which adds the ability to post
to-dos, tasks and reminders.
You can also use the popular app Glympse (free for Android, iOS and
Windows Phone) to keep track of someone. You choose who to send a
Glympse to and for how long — once someone receives a Glympse from you,
they will be able to track you in real-time, for the duration that you
previously allowed.
Finally, if personal safety is the primary use case, try bsafe (free for
Android and iOS). You start by creating a safety network of friends and
family (as many as you like) and share your location. In an emergency
situation, just one press of the alarm button will alert your entire
network. With the alarm activated, not only does your phone send
location, it can sound a siren (optional) and starts transmitting voice
and video to bsafe servers in case you need evidence later.

Secure pets and children
2014-10-15 16:38:28.0
You could always use an inexpensive Android phone and an app like GPS
Tracking Pro. If you'd rather not hand a phone over to your child or
attach one to your pet's collar, you can get a small GPS tracker like
TrackID. For Rs 6,700, you get a small, ready-to-use GPS+GSM tracker
that you can place in a bag or clip onto clothing. There is a monthly
fee of Rs 299 which covers the cost of the preinstalled sim card data
charges and 100 SMS per month.
You can monitor the location on any browser. You can also set up
geo-fences (safe zones) and be alerted via SMS when that fence is
breached. SatGuide also offers a phone with GPS for Rs 4,990 that is
specially designed for children.

Around the home
2014-10-15 16:38:20.0
Home is where you can end up losing a lot of your smaller, daily use
items like keys, spectacles, remote controls, flash drives or even phone
cables. Rather than manually searching through every nook and corner of
the house, you can use a Bluetooth tag - this is a small tracking device
that can be clipped or stuck onto anything and tracked using your
smartphone and the corresponding app.
Available in various bright colours, Nokia Treasure Tag (Rs 2,100) can
be attached to a bunch of keys or kept inside your bag. The tag uses
Bluetooth wireless technology and using a Windows Phone 8 smartphone,
you can view the tag's location on a map or use audiovideo guidance to
track the tag's whereabouts. A single phone can be paired with up to
four tags simultaneously for tracking lost items.
Chipolo ($29 + shipping) is a coin-sized tracker with a built-in battery
(6 months) that can be clipped to keys, a backpack or your pets. It uses
Bluetooth, has a range of 200 feet and shows location on a map in the
app (iOS and Android). With Chipolo, you can also track your phone if
misplaced — shake the tracker and the phone will start buzzing too.
With a battery life of over a year, SticknFind ($49.99 for a pack of
two) is another compact, coin-sized tracker with built-in buzzer and
light. The app displays a radar screen on which you can view and locate
the tracker (up to 100 feet range). Just tap on the app to make each
tracker buzz or light up. You can set up the phone to notify you if one
of the tracking stickers moves out of a preset range. You can also
activate the 'Lost Sticker' feature for the app to search for a tracker
and then send you a mail with its last seen location coordinates and
timestamp..

Locate stolen vehicles
2014-10-15 16:38:09.0
Satguide's vehicle tracker (Rs 11,490) comes with a magnet cover that
allows it to stick to metal. The price includes the cost of installation
and it connects with your car battery for power (cables are included in
the box). You can set a Geofence so that if your vehicle travels out of
the authorized area, you will be notified. The only catch is that you
need to purchase a GSM sim card and subscribe to a SMS plan for the GPRS
tracking to work.
MapmyIndia MMI Rover 200 (Rs 9,990): You can even track your vehicle in
real-time using a browser and get information like engine status,
speeding, vehicle route address. The waterproof tracker has internal
battery for backup and an immobilizer to cut engine power if the car is
stolen.
SafeKar (Rs 7,999)

 The Xperia Z2 in black

The Xperia Z2, Sony's latest flagship, is a powerful and intuitive
smartphone that runs on Android v4.4.2 (KitKat). This handset includes
accessibility features that render it suitable for users with visual and
hearing disabilities. However, it may not be adequate for persons with
dexterity disabilities and/or with poor comprehension skills. Amóvil was
able to review this device thanks to a loan by Orange.

The phone that measures 146.8 x 73.3 x 82.2 mm and weighs 163 grams, has
a design similar to previous Xperia Z models. It comes with a 5.2-inch
IPS LCD display with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The handset is IP58
certified for protection against dust and water to as deep as one meter
 and up to 30 minutes.

The Xperia Z2 also includes a 20.7 MP primary camera with autofocus and
flash LED, and a 2.2 MP secondary camera for videocalls. Regarding
connectivity it includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi direct. It also
supports GPS and 4G data network.

 Accessibility review

   Vision

As previously mentioned the Xperia Z2 is suitable for blind users. The
device comes with a version of TalkBack that reads these users through
most of the visual content available in the display. However, as
observed in other Android models, it is unable to identify a few minor
elements in native apps, such as the calendar, probably due to lack of
 proper labeling.

Persons with low vision will also be able to use this smartphone with
some comfort. It is equipped with an inbuilt screen magnifier and allows
changing both the size of the text and the screen brightness. However,
customizing color contrast or reversing the colors of background and
foreground is not possible in this device.

   Hearing

The Xperia Z2 is hearing aid compatible (HAC rating, M3/T3). It also
includes features that may contribute to enhance these users'
experience, such as a basic sound equalizer, a background to cancel
background noise and an option to slow the speech of the other calling
party to improve intelligibility. The device also supports text
 messaging, chats and video calls.

   Dexterity

Persons with dexterity disabilities may have a limited experience with
this handset. Although it comes with voice recognition system that works
rather well, it is not possible to reproduce the function of side
buttons from the display. Thus, users with severe dexterity issues may
be unable to handle this phone using assistive devices such as mouth
 sticks or head wands.

The Z2 may also be unsuitable for users with mild dexterity
disabilities. Because it is dust and water resistant, cable slot come
sealed rendering hard to manipulate to these users, particularly to
those with little strength or tremors in the upper limbs.

   Comprehension

The Xperia Z2 is unsuitable to users with poor comprehension skills. The
display includes icons with a design that is hard to identify and that
do not comply with accessibility standards.

However, this device includes an app that may improve the experience of
these users. This app has been designed to guide them through the entire
configuration process. It has been written in a simple and easy to
understand language. Also, menus can be customized to meet these users'
 needs.

For more information about accessibility in Xperia Z2, please consult
 the full accessibility report

Re: [Mobile.AI] Android apps requested

2014-10-17 Thread Satguru Rathi
Hi Mohib, Well, at first, thanks a lot for responding to my query. As far as
Android goes, it is still an evolving system and given its nature,
complexities/issues/minor accessibility challenges here and there will
always be there but with KitKat 4.4.4, I think it is usable substantially by
VI and I am loving my Android One phone because of its Pure Stock Android
and fast response compared to other phones in this prise range. Since most
things can also be done with GoogleOK, I also do not require a keyboard for
typing etc though I am still along with you all waiting for a truly
revolutionary typing app like we once had on IOS called Fleksi. Else, most
of the inbuilt apps are usable with Talkback and in totality, I am quite
satisfied with the accessibility improvements in Kitkat and am surely
looking forward to the next update to AndroidL in Mid November somewhere
perhaps.

With best regards,
Satguru

1. nice hourly speeking clock, you can try say the time if you are fan
of this clock which we use on our dextop. else, my favorite is chime
time which produce beep every half an hour. otherwise use chime me big
ban.
2. GonMad music player is the best and accessible with talkback.
3. Total commander is the best one according to my view. though u can
try file commander too.
Note: first two applications except chime time are paid.
By the way, whats your take on at android, Mr. Satguru?

Hello,
i've installed MBraille and typing this message using it. Its really nice
app. With little practice we can type very fast. It supports contracted
braille. As soon as we switch to another app the typed text gets copyed to
the clipboard. We can also send sms, tweets and mails using the various
commands.

it costs Rs. 77 per month or around rupees 2000 onetime.

 Hello, friends!
 timy sebastian
 timys...@gmail.com:
 Oct 15 03:59PM +0530 asked:
 will it support indian currencies?
red same in the previous post, but no idea how to do it.

Yes, blind-droid wallet allready supports indian currency! To enable
recognition of any currency different from US dollars and Euro, do the
 following:

 1. Install blind-droid wallet it self, using this play store page
 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mirwebsistem.currencyeyes
 2. Go to the app developer's page at play store from PC or from your
phone, also you can use option in the blind-droid wallet settings dialog
 to get there
 -
 https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Oleg+Taystruk
 3. Find the module which supports your currency. In your case it is
 Blind-Droid Wallet -- Indian Currency (Blind-Droid Wallet -- INR) -
 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mirwebsistem.currencyeyes_in
 4. Install on your device all modules you need.
 5. Run Blind-droid wallet application, go to the settings, set your
currency here (default currency is US dollars, all installed currency
 modules are displayed
 in choose your currency dialog).
Note. You can switch bitveen installed currencies very fast by shaking
your phone. To enable this switching method, check corresponding
 checkbox in the
 app settings.
 6. After you have set your currency, go back to the main blind-droid
wallet window. App will reload active currency, now it uses not USD, but
 currency
 you've just selected. Enjoy.
