Re: [Mobile.AI] Need to talk with someone about I O Svs Androidofflist
Hello Mohib, you are absolutely right. In the Symbian opperating system with physical keypad, you had a complete control over the phone, which you never get in the Android system with touch screen. Earlier, there used to be separate folders for the miss calls, received calls and the calls made by us, but, in the android system, everything is mixed together. We are opting Android by compultion and not by choice. Recently I have upgraded my phone to 5.1.1, in which they have made so maney changes, which are not at all desirable. Earlier, to unlock the phone, we had to swipe from left to right, but now we have to swipe vertically with two fingers from down to top. Many of the terms have also been changed. for example, Messeging has now become Messenger. call history button has become something else. Professor Shyam M. Senior Android users might fondly recall Spiel, which was alive around 2011 last, a screen reader that even surpassed Talkback in functionality and speed. Google then suddenly changed the entire framework for how accessibility is done on their platform, and Spiel was no more. Although current compiled releases of it can be run successfully even under Android 5.1, the code is not often maintained and needs a lot of work to be a daily driver. And then, without warning, a new contender came on to the scene. The 1 megabyte screen reader, which is technically called Shine Plus is developed by a Chinese company called ATLab. As a result, the English text of the program and manual is not constructed well, though this does not take away from its functionality if you are willing to learn and be patient with the interface. The manual can be found here in a text file form. You might be wondering, is it better than Talkback? Before we dive into some of the unique features of Shine plus, we must note that it is a very special screen reader as it also includes a screen magnifier and other tools for people who have high-partial vision. This means that it not only is a screen reader, but also a magnifier at the same time. In the Android world, that’s definitely a first, and this reason alone could make it useful for many people, since changing the mode it operates in is very simple. When you first install the Shine Plus application (it does not call itself “Another Talkback screen reader”), you need to launch the application from your home screen to configure it. Here you will set your desired mode depending on the level of vision you have. First, the app will actually check whether you have Google TTS or the keyboard installed, and then will proceed to allow you the option to set your mode of preference. Once you press the back button, it will place you into the Accessibility settings of Android, where you will be given a list of available services. The three options are “based on voice support”, “based on letter expansion”, and “sight protection.” No, it will not protect you from the horrors of the sighted world — that latter choice is for those who need to have parts of the screen spoken outloud from time to time. It allows you to use a “candy bar” which you can pan around the screen and use to read parts of it accordingly. Voice support is what those who are completely blind will use, while the other one (letter expansion) is for those who need letters zoomed bigger as they use their device. Once you have set your choice, enabling the screen reader is the next challenge. We have found that in most cases, it is impossible to press “OK” after the confirmation dialog appears which asks you to turn on Shine Plus. This is easy enough to resolve, though requires some agility. When you have reached the alert prompt to enable it, Pause Talkback either through the global context menu or the new volume up+ volume down key combination. Once paused, press near the bottom right corner of the screen, right above the home/back/recents button bar of your device. This will activat

Re: [Mobile.AI] Hey folks do u miss your symbian phone?
All these discussions show that the blind are facing several genuin problems with the Touch Screen, which did not exist in the Symbian phones. Furthermore, these problems are not india-specific but universal. Few days back I had subscribed to a group, where there were members mostly from the countries of Europe and America, but they were also facing several problems regarding the touch screen and were asking for different external key-pads. Instead of just criticizing these discussions, one has to help finding out solutions. I think, those who have prepared this operating system and its corusponding Screen reader have not taken the blind into account. The touch screen can be much more easy if all the buttons are labled, and if all the buttons in all applications have a fixed place, what so ever it may be. If the buttons like more options, delete, okay, cancal, done, are assigned a fixed place, the blind would find it much easy. Thanking you, Yours, Professor Shyam M. Sayanekar. Re: [Mobile.AI] Hey folks do u miss your symbian phone?
Yes very much. This is so because; the ease and total control which you could get in the symbian phone is not possible in the Android phone. The option key, the menu key and the arrow keys give you full control over the symbian phone. The typing eas in the Symbian phone is wonderful. In the symbian phone the full phone could be operated with one hand with your single thumb, whereas, in Android you require using both hands and more fingers. Some say that they do everything just with one hand, but that is an exception and not a rule. The main problem with the android phones is that the location of different buttons such as delete button and more options button in different operations is not fixed, and you take a lot of time to locate them. Further more, many of the buttons are not labled. The number of screens also add to our problems, All these problems are not there in the Symbian. Professor Shyam M. It comes in different capacities, cards of 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB are used in most phones. Most entry level and mid range phones support cards up to 32 GB. High end phones support cards up to even 128 GB, and mid range options like the Asus Zenfon supports up to 64 GB cards. You can move a Micro SD card from one phone to another. Phones, particularly the entry level ones, would have very limited internal storage, so to store more data, it is always good to have additional storage available. If you store your songs, videos, photos and documents on the SD card, then you can leave the internal storage for the Android OS and the different apps installed. If you don't crowd the internal storage, that would help the phone perform well. Not all phones support the Micro SD cards though. Phones like the Motorola Moto G and the Xiaomi Mi 3 do not support the feature, as is the case with the Google Flagship Nexus phones. The Apple iPhone also does not support a micro sd card. Re: [Mobile.AI] can one use touchscreen phone effectively atcrowdedplaces?
Itt is not at all true that we Indians do not want to learn new things. It is also not true that we want to stick to old things. Those who are arguing in this way should remember that they are also Indians. Those who have mastered the new Android phones have gone far ahead and are not in a mood to understand that others are facing some genuin problems. I am trying my best to learn my Moto x phone but I am not getting proper training. Instead of criticizing others, the members who have mastered the Android phones should try to help others. My problem is that on the android phone, things keep moving and they have no fixed places. for example, it becomes very difficult to locate the More Options button. Unless your queries are solved, you cannot learn this phone on your own. further, many of the buttons are not labled. at least Android should have taken care of this point. Professor Shyam M. Even to dial the number you have to find out the digit at the screen, than lift your finger, if some digit is entered wrongly, find the button to delete. [Mobile.AI] Queries about Using Android
Dear expert friends, please answer my basic queries regarding the use of Android phones with touch screen. My queries may sound to you very silly but they are basic to me. If you answer all these queries, it will prepare a nice guide for the new Android users. Q1. What are the different finger gestures and how are they used? q2. At present, I am using Nokia Phone with Talks and I have full control over it because the menu key, the option key, the back key, the call and receive key, the cancel key, the arrow keys and the entire key pad is in my hold. But in Android, where are these keys? There location is not fixed. q3. How to make a call or how to receive or cancel a call? How to select a particular person from the list of contacts? where do we find the key pad to type the initial letter of that person? q4. How to find and delete the miscalls? q5. How to send, read or delete a message, where to locate the key pad to type, and where to find the option key? How to do the spell checking? Where is the dictionary? q6. Where is the voice recorder? If we record something, where to locate that recorded file? q7. How to move from one screen to another? How to move the icons from one screen to another? q8. Where is the accessibility option and where is the granularity option? By now you must have realized that my main problem is to locate the different keys. Once I get a firm grip over the keys, rest of the things should be easier. Thanking you, yours, Professor Shyam M. Thus the total cost came to 26 thousand. It has 2 GB RAM, 16 GB memory and Android 4.4.2 Kitcat. But I am totally ignorant about using it. So I need Material, which will guide me from the very beginning. Please help me out if you can. Professor Shyam M. But I have disturbed you and all more then I should do in the subject of android. Well after 15 day’s efforts of your and little bit of mineI can now understand few things: 1 as vamshi sir distinct we have 3 choices: outdated nokia, confusing android and expensive I phone. Among all android has various options. We can try android if we have enough time and desire to learn and experiment. 2 in android we have 2 options: touch and type and only touch screen devices. Touch and type phones are desirable, but unfortunatlly we do not have many such devices now days. While in touch screen we have plentey of choices. 3 touch screen devices are manageable but not comfortable at least in the beginning. 4 like nokia android phones are not ready to use at the time of purchasing at least in our case. We have to depend on few 3rd party applications. 5 if we want to use android, we must buy some device and learn ourselves. As other can advice but to teach using android is more then tough job. 6 there might be some general principles of accessibility in android but each one has his or her own distingt theory. So we must experiment with our own device instead of asking foolish questions as I did. Though whatever I have understood is not enough. But now at least I have some idea. So now I will buy a nice budget phone and try to learn myself without disturbing anyone. We welcome Jaya Prakash to take a lead in this matter, but, it is not agreeable that the traffic on the group should be stopped, because it is only through this group that all others also come to know so as to what is happening. This group serves as a strong platform through which we can voice our grievances. Therefore, the traffic on the group should not be stopped until all the issues have been satisfactorily sorted out. This I came to know through one of his mails where he stated except Mukkesh Jain, all were delivered dual core phones. Later I contacted him and he gave several excuses including hurried and misplaced delivery. This happened with two other persons as well. But he assured me before and after the delivery of phone that I received quad processor phone. Now, I realized that this is a flat lie. On Friday the 12th of April, he came to my home to update my phone from Jellybean 4.1 to jellybean 4.2 but he could not do it. There was also a problem of 3g internet network in that phone. He tried to acces internet from my 3g card, but it was disconnecting every minute or so. WE removed the sim from that mobile and inserted in my c5 handset and browsed the net without any problem. Therefore, I returned the phone to Mr. Kiran with a request to give me an updated quad processor phone.
