[MMouse]: guilty pleasures

1999-05-10 Thread Philip Smoker

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet ain't got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend, I know you're not a fool
Shoulda known (should known better) than to cheat a friend
The wasted chance that I feel given
So I'm never gonna dance again, the way I danced with you...
whoa oh...
Whoa...

My biggest guilty pleasure would be "I Know What Boys Like" by the
Waitresses, and most Prince stuff. Guilty because I don't listen to it
often around anyone else. And The Hooters, Nervous Night, that whole album.
  Guilty as sin.

[MMouse]: KARP!

1999-05-10 Thread Mark Robbins

My personal guilty pleasure, Bat Benetar and love is a battlefield, that
song kicks ass, 80's cheese incarnate..and since it seems like everyone gets
to plug a band, heres mine; KARP. Started listening to them cause dug
looks so cool in his KARP t's that i just had to find out what all the rucus
was about. Really damn amazing actually if you like that in your face,
can-still-hear-mom's-car-reving-up-in-the-space-next-to-the-clearing-in-the-
garage-we-play-in-type-band. Post production is like a safety net, but all
those holes make me nervous.

Re: [MMouse]: modern lyrics\guilty pleasures

1999-05-10 Thread Chris Duke

I think it is meant to be the son of man rather than the son of God. One
of the lyrics says "..and his dad was oh so mad/should have killed that
little fucker/before he even had." Of the three "dads" that jesus had
(God, joseph, mankind) mankind is the only one that killed him and the only
one that was ever mad at him. Also, he was the only child of man. It's
not really important to specify who exactly was his dad, I guess, but
that's what you get; my dad is a new testament professor of theology.

Does Weezer count as a guilty pleasure? I love that band, I even wrote a
primitve program for them. If anyone wants it, it is at my website at:
http://www.crosswinds.net/atlanta/~ccduke
it is in the downloads section. I also kind of like the Smiths, but not
nearly as much as Weezer. I guess liking the Smiths is better than liking
Morrissey. Violent Femmes rock, too but they aren't bad unless you are
talking about their new stuff, which sucks.

[MMouse]: Rivalry?

1999-05-10 Thread Philip Smoker

There's a rivalry between the Make-Up and the Delta 72?
I know that Gregg Foreman of the Delta 72 had a little tussle with Mr.
Spencer of his famous Blues Explosion (some swaggerly drink-tossing in NYC,
if I'm not mistaken), but I was not aware of any beef with Mr. Svenious's
outfit. Could someone fill me in?

You'd think I'd hear about these things, living so close to D.C. and all...

If everyone is now confessing their guilty pleasures I guess I must admit
mine and I wont be surprised if I get a lot of shit for it, but I'm a big
lover of Slayer. Yes, it is pretty terrible, but I think it stems from my
liking of such groups as the Deftones, Quicksand, BarkMarket, Far, etc. My
taste in music has a tendency to reach far across the board considering my
favorite musician is Neil Young. But anyway, just thought I would confess
my guilty pleasure of "butt-rock" but hey...

[MMouse]: Modern lyrics

1999-05-10 Thread dwr

Good morning!

About the "Jesus Christ was an only child..."

Well, Catholics like to ignore the fact that Mary *may have had sex*, even
after Jesus was born. It doesn't quite fit in with the "virgin" concept.

However - and I just thought of this - this might be a reference to Bill
Cosby. There's a joke which goes something like,

Until I was 12, I thought my name was 'Jesus Christ,' and my brother was,
'Goddamit.' My parents would say, "Jesus Christ! What are you doing?
Goddamit, get in here!"

(I paraphrased this, of course.)

Actually, this, to me, is a particularly amusing interpretation of the song,
and it makes it 100% heretic-free!

Nah, that's later, up it Olympia, WA. The one on July fourth is in Irvine,
called "this Ain't No Picnic" and will, sadly, not feature Modest Mouse (as
I assume the Yo Yo a Go Go will not either) because they will be in europe
with Built to Spill. For more info on TANP go to: www.goldenvoice.com

[MMouse]: Trans Am in Dallas

1999-05-10 Thread Edington, Mark

Ah, so I got to see Trans Am here in Dallas this Saturday. Very cool show.
There were two openers, The Champs. They were like instrumental metal, or as
I prefer to call it, "Heavy Mental". Kind of like Metallica without lyrics.
Then Pan Sonic, they were quite cool as well. No guitars, or anything like
that to muss things up. Very loud, bass heavy, kinda nouveau Kraftwerk. Then
of course Trans Am rocked the house! They didn't do a whole lot from their
new album, which was fine by me. I can't really get into their vocals on
that album. But what they did do with the vocals was cool, it was definitely
better live than on the cd. And this friend that was with me there knew the
guy that was doing Trans Am's sound, and who also produced Futureworld. I
don't remember his last name, I just know his name was Johnathan. So, we met
up with him after the show, and hung out in the little room upstairs from
the stage. We smoked out with the guys from Pan Sonic, and the Champs, and
Trans Am was pretty much just in and out. I only got to talk to them for a
minute or two. Just complimented them on the show, and what not. Mentioned
how much my band is influenced by them. But not too much gushing, you know.
I had to play it cool. I was just in awe that I was actually hanging out
with these guys. We got invited to an after party, but my friend didn't want
to feel like he was riding Johnathan's coat tails. I don't know why, I
didn't care, I just wanted to go to the party. But, about halfway home, he
wised up and was like, "We should have gone to the party". No shit Oh,
and I saw Delta 72 in Denton Friday. That was a cool show. They remind some
people of the Make Up, and a friend of ours mentioned that, and the guy
pointed to my friend who happened to be at that show also, and who got us in
with Trans Am and the bunch, and said, "That's your fault isn't it?" They
used to play together in D.C. and he knows about the rivalry between them
and the Make Up, and he was like, "That wasn't me." It wasn't, but yeah, it
was his fault for mentioning it to the other guy. Anyway, it was funny.
guess you had to be there. There was also this other band called The Git
low. They were fucking insane. They played about six minutes, flailing,
falling down, swinging their guitars at the crowd, pushing them around. They
weren't even on the stage. They were out on the floor with everyone else. It
was crazy. Anyway, it was a very good weekend for shows. Also, Man or
Astroman? tonight in Denton. Fuck sleep, who needs it?

cool thing. and i was good at skating backwards.
but then again, that was also when i shaved my head and had NKOTB shaved in

What's really sad is that I've been drug into the world of MTV. I find
myself watching TV a lot more than I have in the past few years. The only TV
I've allowed myself is the Tom Green Show (I'm a fan, for he is the male
equivalent of my best friend and I.) once a week. The other day, however, I
found myself watching Total Request Live (for those who are more hip with
MTV, they call it TRL) N'SYNC came on with their newest song, the video
that's in the asylum and their women have driven them crazy with heartbreak,
blahblahblah. I've made fun of these boy bands and in fact, I spend a great
deal of conversation time on the topic of MTV as well. But as I sat on my
floor, less than two feet from my TV screen, I found the one with the goatee
and dark hair quite attractive. No not the one with the cool hair, not the
ugly and not the two from the Mickey Mouse Club. The one that is leftover.
The impossible has happened. I've fallen for the scheme that is ... MTV.
Now I feel the need to go get belligerent, good-day.
 Aloha.
