Re: [MMouse]: More Real World conjecture...
I have an observation about this whole Promise ring fiasco...ive never really watched the Real World or this one inparticular but I have one thing to mention. How can u be sure that the members of the show picked these songs? Couldnt it be true also that people behind the scenes in their marketing department picked these songs to appeal to the so-called "twentysomething college-age demographic"they figure that by including what they probably perceive as college music would appeal to those who watch the show and would hence buy the CD. I know its MTV and if they really wanted to sell records they would have at least included 98 degrees, blink 182, and some fairly new rap/rock combopapa roach perhaps But I am sure these people behind the scenes picked these songs, why else would "Deep South" be included in an episode taking place in New Orleansguess it kinda makes sense..how much do u wanna bet that if the said show was taking place up in New England they would have included "Pink Chimneys" just to seem clever or whatever..just an idea to ponder! JS The show is probably scripted and anything these people say have probably had to go through for someones approval so they assign them bands and give them dialogue to say to make it appear as if these people picked these songs so kids can be like, wow so and so picked this song becuase he/she likes it and they are hot so it must be kewl to like them also.. -"like Im supposed to be interested in what she is saying becuase she is like wearing a backpack" - Original Message - From: you can really get it on! Re: [MMouse]: and she said what about the scene?- Rally around the watercooler
Isnt this basically what all popular television has become these daysshows with no substance but are developed to make for interesting conversation at the watercooler the next morning between colleagues at work.peoples lifes have become so goddamn dull and boring and homogenized that we need a freakin' television show to make ourselves feel important. I am also lost at work in the morning when people asked if i watched "Survivor" last night and im like no.some people look at me as if I have a horn growing out of my forehead etc etc.its sad that your inclusion into society has to be based on liking what everyone else likes or what the fascist media programmers make you participate in or say u have to do or buy to be considered a part of society today.fuck all that! People are definitely becoming stupider and stupider! Oh and the other day after discussing this damn show.someone brought up the idea about how important do u think it is to be an individual. And the same people who looked down on me for not watching a particular tv show, for going to a dank smelly club to hear some band no one has ever heard of on a friday night instead of going to the trendy new young meat market bar for yuppies and making myself seen and for not wanting to go with them to the big outdoor Dave Matthews concert with them where it is gonna be so cool to be drunk with 50,000 other idiots say that indeed they are individuals in todays society were asked if they follow the masses. Every single persons response was a wholehearted NO, they said that they were individuals because they like whatever they like as being popular and they dont follow the crowd, oh OK..So what constitutes being an individual in today's society? OK the thing about the real world. I really dig this show because it is entertaining. I don't necessarily think its reality or something to be treated with seriousness, it's a tv show. It serves it purpose well. If these people want to do this, then that's great for them, and I don't mind watching it. It is very silly to release a soundtrack to the show and books and have the cast make cameos on other MTV shows and stuff, but hell, they become celebrites now. A funny thing is I remember on an older real world...with that puck guy...everyone was all in a fight because puck was saying that shows like 90210 are silly and shouldnt be watched and the other cast members were saying it was just fun to watch and get together with friends and talk about it. That seems to be what the real world has become. And i can absolutley see where someone could hate this show with a passion. .bagel.

[MMouse]: No more Real World, but One interesting thing about MTV that Iknow...
Hey JS, in response to your belief about things being "scripted" you are very right on. The following is absolutely true: I know this guy whose sister was picked to be on this MTV "Fashion Makeover" cheesy show where some so called "fashion professionals" make-over kids to look "better" somehow. It originally aired towards the beginning of Summer. Well anyways, this gal was confronted by some MTV scouts at Disneyworld and they asked her to be on this show. The funny thing is that, if you ever watch this episode, it is presented as though the whole thing is a "surprise". The MTV crew comes to her college, enters this auditorium, where all these other students are, and "surprises" her saying that they are going to give her a makeover, right then and there (whoopdeeedoo!!!). All of the students appear surprised as well and everyone is clapping, etc. Well, her brother told me that the MTV crew totally told everyone what they were going to do and that they should "act surprised" etc. In other words, the whole thing was scripted To get off this subject, I saw that someone had "Dirty Three" listed on a playlist or something. They are one of my favorite bands out there. They almost seem to defy definition, as they don't easily fit into any typical "indie" or "instrumental" category. Are any of you into any other good "instrumental" bands? I've heard of Tortoise, but have never actually "heard" them. Peace out y'all... Jason P.S. [MMouse]: this list is really stupid

[MMouse]: dis-cabled veteran [warning: looooooong]
There's nothing wrong with watching some TV every once in a while. Everyone needs a brief escape from reality. Some people drink. Others take a more illicit route [narcotics, hallucinogens]. I don't have a problem with any of these outlets. When consumed intelligently and in moderation, all of these things could provide some potential mental health benefits. I grew up with television. I learned from television; traveled the globe with television. How does a six year old boy fly from New York City to Beijing in half an hour? Elementary, my friends: via television. TV got me through some tough times in my teenage years. I grew up a scrawny kid in a very small, red-neck town in the middle of nowhere, where football was king [think Varsity Blues meets Hee Haw]. If you weren't enthralled with the gridiron gladiators under the Friday night lights, your remaining options were cruising "the drag", drinking, and/or screwing. And, if Friday nights were not bad enough for an un-athletic, pubescent male with no car, no beer, and no "poontang", Monday through Thursday evenings had absolutely zilch/zero/nada to offer. So my "school nights" were pretty much spent on the couch, homework on my lap, eyes glued to the tube. In this small town almost totally devoid of art, darkened by a cloak of ignorance of any culture beyond the reach of its competitive athletic region, I had found a shining cathode ray of light. A beacon, if you will, that showed me the way to the wonderful world of arts and sciences [two words: Discovery Channel]. Okay, okay. It was also a world of glam-rock era MTV, cheesy sit-coms, and your garden variety sex violence. But, regardless, I learned just as much or more from television as I did in all my years of inferior public education up to that point, and I am thankful for that. Thanks for the cable, mom and dad. Of course things changed in college. I was in a larger town; I met new people. TV consumption decreased dramatically; alcohol consumption increased proportionately. For a brief stint, I did fall victim to the allure of the Playstation. But, overall, I was able to share knowledge with people of varied interests, and television was left behind for a little while. These days, I don't watch much TV, except for the FOX Sunday night ritual of King of the Hill, Simpsons, X-Files [in which I have not participated for many months, now]. There's just not anything on that I feel is worthy of my time. Oh, yeah. I don't have cable. So that narrows down the options to the three grandfather networks [ABC, NBC, CBS], FOX, the WB, UPN, PBS, and Univision [en espanol]. Hey! Sounds like I have quite a variety of options. Wrong! We all know what the major networks have to offer on any given weekday, prime-time: "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", "Survivor", "Big Brother", etc. Thanks, but no thanks. FOX, the red-headed stepchild of the networks, may have the "world's scariest" police chases, naughty deeds caught on tape [complete with pixel-blurred boobs], and other shock TV fodder to offer, but my appetite for that stuff was satiated back in the glory days of "HBO Undercover". FOX even had it's own, now-defunct, big money show [appropriately titled "Greed"]. Then the brilliant execs at FOX, with their uncanny, unparalleled ability to tap into the minds of the lowest common denominator, decided that people don't want to have to use their brains to win a million bucks. So they assembled a herd of shallow, gold-digging women and paraded them in front of an unlikely millionaire bachelor who was to select one lucky bachelorette to be his bride. "Where did they find such a millionaire?" you ask. Well, I suppose they put an ad in the paper, or something like that. We all know how that turned out. [Red-headed stepchildren, please accept my deepest apologies] And you have the bastards of broadcast in the "WB" and UPN [I apologize to you guys, too, you bastards]. I can't offer too much up about the "WB" [my reception is a bit hazy]. But I highly doubt that I would find much interest in Dawson's Creek, etc. other than the cute girls. I can take a walk outside and get that. Then there are the ethnic niche-marketed sit-coms. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm pleased to see that all twenty-odd Wayans brothers are gainfully employed and that Jamie Foxx has also secured a steady gig. But even the most sympathetic of you, my brothers and sisters, could not fathom the heartache I felt when I tuned in one evening only to find out that LL Cool J had assumed the role of Mrs. Garrett [of "The Facts of Life"] on a family-oriented primetime sit-com. What the hell happened to you LL? Remember when we were young and we used to rock the bells? We would eliminate punks/cut 'em up in chunks. You were bad. Your hat was like a shark's fin. [?!] It's really a damn shame. LL has definitely seen "bigger and deffer" days. What about PBS? I've got no beef with PBS. I'm a sucker for

[MMouse]: We rally round the watercooler
Isnt this basically what all popular television has become these daysshows with no substance but are developed to make for interesting conversation at the watercooler the next morning between colleagues at work If that was the intention, then they've seriously failed. That isn't the intention, of course. peoples lifes have become so goddamn dull and boring and homogenized that we need a freakin' television show to make ourselves feel important. I don't think television shows make us feel important, quite the opposite in fact. Most people aspire to connect with other people, though the ways they try to make those connections usually differ quite a bit. The mass media serves this process by providing a common language and environment for people to feel connected in. In exchange for providing that connectivity, people are willing to buy some stupid product, or watch some horribly bad (in my opinion) TV show. I don't think that's such a horrible thing. Sure, I feel that kind of connection is shallow, trite and meaningless, but what do i know? If you see things differently and wish to transcend, that opportunity is available. If you're content with all the trappings of modern consumerism, wonderful; the world can always use another middle manager. its sad that your inclusion into society has to be based on liking what everyone else likes or what the fascist media programmers make you participate in or say u have to do or buy to be considered a part of society today.fuck all that! I think that's an overstatement to say that in order to be a contributing part of society you have to buy into some mass media hallucination. In order to be a part of consumer culture, definitly you have to buy into that, but not society as a whole. There are many other avenues for people with no desire to ever flip through an ikea catalog. If there's any one thing that america is very good at providing (at least to the middle class and above) its options; from the cola you drink to the school you go to, to the culture you participate in, alternatives abound. So you won't be able to connect with the majority of the population? Oh well. There's still a pretty vibrant minority out there once you get over the fact that the majority is resigned to mediocrity. Oh and the other day after discussing this damn show.someone brought up the idea about how important do u think it is to be an individual..So what constitutes being an individual in today's society? True individuality isn't possible. Human beings define their reality based on their interactions with other human beings. The scupltor who sits in his studio and makes chickens out of car parts he found in a junk yard is no more an indiviudal than a consumer who goes to the supermarket and experiences some existential agony over the selection of toothpaste. The fact that someone knows they exist is individuality enough for me. Mark We are alone because we know differently.

[MMouse]: Spaceghost...What About Fat Albert...
I'm sorry to get off the subject of MM, but I just thought of something. All this talk about SpaceGhost got me thinking about my favorite cartoons as a child. And I have a question to which I have not received a conclusive, satisfying answer: Why don't we ever see any reruns of Fat Albert The Cosby Kids? that was one of my favorite shows of all time...I've purposefully looked for it for a while. There's two cartoon-only satellite stations (The cartoon network and a new one called Boomerang). Let me tell you, they have some pretty silly, OBSCURE cartoons from back in the day. But like I said, no Fat Albert. Now, I've gotten into quite a few debates about this: Theory 1: Someone told me that Fat Albert isn't considered 'pc" for some reason. I guess the theory holds that the show reaffirmed stereotypes about young African American males living in the inner city or something. What a bunch of crap!! I don't ever remember an episode where Albert and the gang joined a gang, or robbed a store with a gat. Some people have said that many of the characters were stereotypical/ or negative portrayals of individuals with certain "problems" (ie, Fat Albert and his eating disorder, Mushmouth and his speach impediment, etc.) Theory 2: I was also told that Bill Cosby was a bit embarrassed about the show (for perhaps some of the above reasons). Perhaps they reflected his younger, idealistic, "liberal" views about the world. If any of you have ever heard any of the Cos's early comedy albums, he was quite funny. He talked about a bunch of stuff, including smoking weed, etc. But after the phenomenal financial success of the Cosby Show in the 1980's (apparently) he had become some sort of greedy Republican. There was even an episode of The Cosby Show where Theo tried weed and the Cos went off on him. I guess (in the immortal words of Cyndi Lauper) "money changes everything".Thus, another theory holds that he (being the copyright holder) for the show, is simply holding out for the best financial deal to syndicate the old cartoons. No matter what the true answer is, we are all being seriously deprived of revisiting a classic cartoons which is sure to elicit numerous childhood memories of sitting in front of the 'tube on Saturday morning. Those of you old enough to remember this show (esp. if you have some answers or even theories) please respond on the mailing list. God Bless.. Jason
