[MMouse]: 'indie in unexpected places'

1999-10-02 Thread wm. a. richards

To all my indie brothers and sisters who are disturbed because their
favorite band is on in sears, or stereolab is in a volvo commercial, etc.:

The fact that indie music gets heard in public places isn't all that bad, is
it? I mean, I was kind of shocked when I heard stereolab in the volvo
commercial, but it's about time they got paid for something. and their
music has the kind of post-modern/neo-classical vibe that I get whenever i
see a volvo

Just because an indie band is played somewhere commercial, it doesn't mean
the music's changed or will change, does it? I mean, how many people on
this list would know about indie music if it weren't for pavement's 'cut yr
hair' or sonic youth's 'dirty' or nirvana, or 120 minutes? A lot of us have
college radio to rely on, and/or the internet, but we can't live in an indie
vacuum can we?

So, next time you're on your way to the salvation army, stop by sears. You
just might stumble in to something hip!

It's a tough one, but I saw morphine at the warped tour two years ago. they
played for what seemed like forever and it was an outdoor show which was
cool. they were on the 2nd when they started their set there were a few
people checking them out but by the time they were done the area was packed.
they played their tritar and even treated us to some poetry.

i might have enjoyed it more because i ate some funky mushrooms on my

[MMouse]: this, that, and t'other thing

1999-09-11 Thread wm. a. richards

Anybody know what the red fuzzy object is on the back of "Interstate 8?"

Why does popular music suck so bad these days?

Is there a Flaming Lips song that sounds all weird and orchestral and has
some guy singing about "hole, dug by little moles, with telephones for eyes"
etc. etc.? Does anybody know who sings this song? Do I know what the hell
I'm talking about?

Has anyone out there seen my wallet?

If you ever go to Canada and buy a carton of cigarettes at the tax-free
shop, you'd better declare them at the border or they'll take them away.

Can somebody send me a soundcard? I've got like 35 modest mouse mp3s on my
pc and no functional soundcard. It wouldn't be so bad if I still had some
cigarettes and my wallet.

[MMouse]: the saddest of sad songs

1999-07-26 Thread wm. a. richards

wow, all you people know the names of the songs and everything...

there's a song by smog where he talks about the past or something, "my hair
was long then and i..." is the only line i can remember at the moment. but
there's a horn riff at the chorus that makes it the king of all sad songs.
this sad horn part is forever stuck in my head although i can't remember any
of the words. sorry i don't know the name of it...

close seconds in my opinion would be the last song on pavement's "brighten
the corners", ("open call to all prison architects..."), "whenever i breathe
out..." by the mouse, and the entire "beheaded" album by bedhead.

Re: [MMouse]: that cat what's sellin cd.s

1999-07-25 Thread wm. a. richards

I can dig that your selling the cds and a lot of time & effort goes into
it--buying the cdrs, burning 'em, mailing them...but $13 is a lot of money.
bootlegging in my opinion has always been about fans trading tapes and
stuff, like the many people that post mp3s for free whenever possible.
Selling a cd for $13 also hurts the band, man. It's like you're cuttin in
on their cash by selling them. I know that even though it costs you $$$ to
do this you're making money on the deal...CD-R's are like $2, and shipping
can't be more than $2. Burning the CD takes some of your time, but $9 worth
of your time?? I'm not claiming to know exactly how much it costs you, but
it appears you're making a profit off of something you have no right to
profit from.

1999-07-19 Thread wm. a. richards

first off, i agree with the person who suggested removing 'emo' from our
music vocabularies...but we still need a term with which to pigeonhole the
music, otherwise we'll suffer from wicked gestalt voodoo--SO, i suggest we
call it 'elmo rok' from now on. any other ideas?

***somebody wrote:***
>emo is "indie" rock that "hard core" kids will say they listen
>to..openly.

i know a lot of hardcore bands & i've heard way too many hardcore
recordings..the phrase "fucking emo dick-lickers" has come up on more than
one occassion both in discussions i've overheard and in live gigs and on
record, so it's good to know that in the hardcore scene there are some other
opinions about elmo rok.

the label 'emo' is a little broad though--while hardcore kids might dig Boy
Sets Fire they're not likely to get hateful listening to Mineral or
Karate

How can we get away with claling this a Modest Mouse list, i wonder..

[MMouse]: 'emo'

1999-07-16 Thread wm. a. richards

Interesting story--the first time I heard the word 'emo' was 2 years ago...i
ran into this singer who I hadn't seen for a while. we were talking about
music and our bands and he goes, "We're EMO now!" Just a few years before
this guy was calling his band "grunge". I'm like, "what the fuck is emo,
dude?" and he starts talking about drive like jehu and some other bands (who
are all good bands, IMHO).
I had recently discovered modest mouse so I asked if he had heard them. He
said he had but he was not into them or something.

is modest mouse 'emo'?

according to all of the 'emo' people i know, most of whom are in 'emo'
bands, wear 'emo' clothes, and cry a lot, modest mouse is not 'emo.' don't
know why--perhaps it's cuz the mouse has a sense of humor. these 'emo'
folks, they like to yell and cry for the most part. but the mouse, i get
the impression that the mouse likes to yell and cry and laugh and drink.

however, most of the emo 'bois', as these 'emo' fellas i know call
themselves, have phat-ass sideburns, like the kind mr. brock had (or still
has? i dont know). Maybe that's where the connection is.

Here in detroit the emo folks seem to have distanced themselves from the
mouse--braid, promise ring, etc etc are all 'emo' and hip, but you hardly
ever hear modest mouse on the 'emo' college radio shows. and modest mouse
usually doesnt come up in 'emo'-conversation.

and that's all there is to know about 'emo' bois and gurls in detroit. not
that anyone wanted to know.

[MMouse]: 'indie'

1999-07-15 Thread wm. a. richards

I don't think the people (including me) who are whining about modest mouse
on epic are concerned that it will decrease our personal 'hipness quotient'.
Rather, I was concerned that the music might change. I also wouldn't dig
having to go to a huge venue to see them when now I can see them with less
than ahundred folks for $10. But of course music always changes--as the
musicians progress or as they get older--at least with good musicians. Then
there's the possibility that being on a major will burn them out and they'll
quit to go be a farmer or do landscaping or something. But that's always a
possibility.

Basically I hope the mouse sells 10,000,000,000,000 records and makes some
fat loot and never has to work another day in their lives. They deserve for
how much their music obviously means to their fans like the people on this
list.

But being on epic probably isn't going to make them suck, nor will it make
them millionaires. I guess I've been makin' a mountain out of a molehill
over the epic thing (not to be confused with mounting a mole).

Peace
