I agree, they do a great version. Slint did a cover of Cortez back in '89
which was phenomenal, seems like great bands really like covering this song.

[MMouse]: BTS & Macy Gray

2000-06-27 Thread Neil Johnston

Hello all, I wanted to share this experience with you. I went to the
EMP(Experience Music Project) opening on Sunday in Seattle. I saw the
concerts that day. On of my favorite all time bands was there. Built To
Spill. Almost every Modest Mouse fan I know loves BTS. Anyway, when we were
at the show BTS played a few covers. Neil Young's "Cortez the killer" and
Ozzy's "Mr.Crawler" but here's the weirdest one of all. BTS played a cover
of Macy Gray's "I try" That song that's on VH1 and MTV like every two
minutes. Doug(BTS front man) said they were playing it for a close friend.
Their rendition was wonderful. Everything those guys touch turns to gold in
my opinion. It was just funny watching Doug say "I try to walk away but I
stumble" HAHAHA I was just like, WTF??? HAHAHA

[MMouse]: BTS Live/Cortez the Killer

2000-05-21 Thread Grace Madden

The best part about the new Built to Spill is the 20+ minute Neil Young
cover, Cortez the Killer. Very true to the original, but five minutes
longer. Listening to it is like an event, or an opera, with different
parts, or movements.

1999-07-07 Thread Philip Smoker

>dug's always said that he's incredibly lazyand is far from a
> >perfectionist.

Now I'm no self-proclaimed BTS expert, but it seems to me that if you wait
almost a full year after the completion of recording an album to release it,
either you had difficulties of some kind (legal problems? lyrics in "You
Were Right"?) or you were being very careful. I was a new BTS fan with
PFNO, but I think KILAS has some serious merit. I had to run over the same
ground again, but I really think that the mint production on the album
highlights the songwriting, a craft that is highly underrated. I hear
backwards drum loops and multiple guitar layers at times, and those kinds of
things are not for the casual musician. I think Doug has a very definite
sound he is trying to create when he hits the studio, and he succeeds.

And as far as all this hot air about Epic, if you think a contract is going
to change the way the boys record albums, then you must have very little
faith in their own motives. A band can sign to a major and not sell a
million copies, by the way (Mr. Bungle being my favorite example, I
imagine). Remember, this is not a hobby to these guys anymore, it's a JOB.
And they have to put food on the table. I don't think they're going to be
staring down the barrel of a 7-figure deal when they have sold like 20,000
copies of their last album. Call me realistic, but the music industry
climate is just not like that right now. So, can we all relax about the
Epic thing? All of yr dreams will come true...all of my dreams came true,
but now I have some new dreams...

[MMouse]: BTS Vs. MM

1999-07-06 Thread Mark Robbins

I've made it pretty
clear that i think the last offering from built to spill was extremely
weak..though i dont want to pin that faultering on the major label
influence..since its pretty obvious to anyone that PFNO was one amazing album,
and that was distributed under the WB major label.  Its impossible to say
what the influence would be..and if there is one i think you wont see it in the
first album, its all about the contract.  If MM wants to make another
album, and Epic is going to give them a ton of fucking money to do it..thats
awesome..more power to issac and i think he definately deserves to live the rest
of his life in total comfort for all the great things his albums have done for
my psyche.  BUT, if Epic puts them under contract, say to produce a certian
amount within a certain time, weve got problems.  If MM sits around, writes
a bunch of songs, and says "here epic, make us millionaires" thats one thing;
but if epic starts pushing MM, youll end up with the polished crap we got from
dug in his latest offering.  Whatever you think about the quality of KILAS,
it just doesnt sound to me like they really cared about it..dug's always said
that he's incredibly lazy and is far from a perfectionist.  Would Issac put
everything hes got into an album he knows is going to make him rich regardless
of the quality?  I dont know him personally, and my opinons are totally
based on conjecture and scant memories of disjumbled articles, but im not sure
he would.  Not that that is at all a bad thing, hes produced in a decade
what some people spend a lifetime trying to hold a candle to.  I guess i
just want to keep my idols idols..i want to believe that they're above money,
above the vices ive been trapped into.  Maybe im asking to much of
him.

The problem here is that hardly any political factions are capable of
agreeing on what those basic rights are. "basic rights" is a
politically evasive and ill-defined term. I'd discuss this further
off-list.

I can't believe that guy couldn't remember what album 'talking shit'
was from. sheesh. toke somemore, dude. those aussies will never
make it off that island at this rate.

i know there were some people who are from oregon area on this
list.. did any of you go to the WOW hall (eugene) BTS show last week?
I skipped it cuz I saw them last month at the crystal ballroom - a
show that kicked ass. but, i have to say that I wasn't a big fan of
that delusions guitarist.

comparisons? i saw BTS at WOW hall maybe last year too.. really small
show. i liked the smaller, cleaner sound in that show (although WOW
hall isn't really the best concert hall ever). maybe i'm getting old.

1999-06-03 Thread Taylor Antrim

Whoever was talking about "that stupid line about how we're all just bricks
in the wall" I think Martsch agrees with you. If you listen to the song,
it sounds like he's heaping some irony on some old cliches: dust in the
wind, bricks in the wall, you can't always get what you want, hard rain's
agonna fall, etc. Doug is way too smart to be rehashing metaphors for five
year olds without making some sly fun of them. I think its a sad, regretful
song which rocks out in all the right places. I didn't see them on Conan,
but I did see them at Slims and I had zero complaints.

Honestly I don't really understand all this bitching about Keep it like a
secret. I have all the albums, bought in the right order, and I have to
say, I just think they keep improving. The love album has some incredible
songs but isn't as solid all the way through as Perfect or Secret. This is
just one more person offering his opinion, but I'm just knocked off my feet
a little everytime I put any one of their albums on and I don't really give
a shit if they don't want to write songs longer than 6 minutes. Who said
songs have to be that long? I'll take my BTS short and sweet if that's the
way they want it. (the indie world could really do with more 3.5 minute pop
songs, if you ask me: keep us away from the neo-hippy Phish-esque jam on and
on bullshit).

Hey, I must go out on a limb and say that Keep it Like a Secret was the
first Built to Spill album I heard from them. Since I've listened to it I've
gotten the privilage to hear other works by them and I must admit that they
all make a better impression on me as well as stay longer in my cd player.
Ironically, I'm glad that Keep It Like A Secret was the first album I heard
from them since I can still appreciate it after listening to all their other
stuff. It might lean way towards one side or the other in comparison to
their other albums, but I still think it holds steady ground on its own.

Enjoy music, thats all

who are you to say that money has made him lazy (who am i to say that it
hasn't)? -- that's a pretty big statement to make, especially about someone
that i'm guessing you don't know.. from what i've gathered he's about the
last person to be affected by money... maybe he's become lazy (i dunno what
leads you to believe he's lazy) but i feel pretty safe in saying that it's
not because of money

also, i think time trap is one of bts' best songs... it's good for so many
reasons -- i can see why you see it as trite, but that's why i think it's so
brilliant.. obviously the song is doing more than just blatantly repeating
lyrics of classic rock songs -- it accomplishes so much and i think
there's sooo much behind it.. it tears me up every time i listen to it
