[MOPO] Worst title translation?

2008-11-16 Thread Roger Kim

Speaking of bad film title translations...

I realize that Elvis films are generally awful, but my favorite is
"It Happened at the World's Fair."

Something seems to have gone wrong when this film title was
translated into various languages. I guess the rest of the world was
not interested in seeing a movie about Elvis at the World's Fair.

Spanish:
Puños y lágrimas (Fists and Tears)

Danish:
Elvis i den syvende himmel (Elvis in the 7th Heaven)

French:
Blondes, brunes, rousses (Blondes, Brunettes, Redheads)

Finnish:
Sydän tarjolla (Heart Available)

Swedish:
Hjärta till salu (Heart for sale)

The Argentina poster has the "Blonde, Brunettes, and Redheads" title,
but at least they were nice enough to show the Space Needle. I think
most of the foreign posters do not.

BTW, I live in Seattle, and I think the US one sheet is a must-have
for any poster collector who lives here.

The real highlight of this film is Kurt Russell kicking Elvis in the shins as I
recall.

What a seriously wasted film career, with very few exceptions they are ghastly
B movies.

VIVA LAS VEGAS (aka LOVE IN LAS VEGAS for some international markets) showed
what happened when Elvis was paired with someone as talented as Ann-Margret.

Re: [MOPO] Worst title translation?

2008-11-16 Thread Richard Auras

My fondest memories are laying on the floor next to my dad watching Elvis
movies.  Was Elvis a good actor?  Not really.  Good singer?  Darn Tootin'.  My
dads not around anymore but every time an Elvis movie comes on TV, I am glued
to the set and I am immediately transported to childhood.

Thank ya...  thank ya very much

Re: [MOPO] Worst title translation?

2008-11-16 Thread Phil Edwards
Yes, he was the daredevil of the back projection screen in many movies.

KING CREOLE is a terrific picture, but being based (loosely) on an early Harold
Robbins novel also helped, as did a solid director in Michael Curtiz who didn't
know much about rock 'n' roll but knew how to exploit Elvis's charisma as
deftly as he did Errol Flynn's.

Elvis (who, so you know, I think was one of the great voices in popular music,
as well as one of its greatest entertainers) always worked best with strong
directors who obviously recognised his latent dramatic talent. Ironically, some
of these were his least successful.

And VIVA LAS VEGAS showed the Colonel that Elvis's legions of female fans
didn't want to see him with a talent like Ann-Margret.

It's a kind of interesting exercise to see what directors directed his films.

I think he did all his own stunts in FUN IN ACAPULCO.

The real highlight of this film is Kurt Russell kicking Elvis in the
shins as I recall.

What a seriously wasted film career, with very few exceptions they are
ghastly B movies.

VIVA LAS VEGAS (aka LOVE IN LAS VEGAS for some international markets)
showed what happened when Elvis was paired with someone as talented as
Ann-Margret.

Speaking of bad film title translations...

I realize that Elvis films are generally awful, but my favorite is "It
Happened at the World's Fair."

Something seems to have gone wrong when this film title was translated
into various languages. I guess the rest of the world was not interested in
seeing a movie about Elvis at the World's Fair.

Spanish:
Puños y lágrimas (Fists and Tears)

Danish:
Elvis i den syvende himmel (Elvis in the 7th Heaven)

French:
Blondes, brunes, rousses (Blondes, Brunettes, Redheads)

Finnish:
Sydän tarjolla (Heart Available)

Swedish:
Hjärta till salu (Heart for sale)

The Argentina poster has the "Blonde, Brunettes, and Redheads" title,
but at least they were nice enough to show the Space Needle. I think most of
the foreign posters do not.

BTW, I live in Seattle, and I think the US one sheet is a must-have for
any poster collector who lives here.

Re: [MOPO] Worst title translation?

2008-11-16 Thread Jeff Potokar

i agree, rich..

the one film of Elvis' that i remember watching as a kid was FLAMING
STAR. i think the story was pretty good for a western and with
Dolores del Rio as Presley's American Indian mother. i found the
whole story touching.

but you make a good point that he wasn't a great actor. he was cast
to make the most of his hype and popularity; although many of today's
actors are awful, too, and they still get cast in film after film...
some things dont change, i guess..hehe.
