Re: [MOPO] Would you buy.....? Wy I asked...

2010-08-13 Thread Bruce Hershenson
I think this has more to do with the size of the hobby than anything else.
If there were more than a few thousand active collectors, there would surely
be buyers for posters like these.

Right now, there is an imbalance in the hobby, with more items for sale than
there are buyers. This creates lots of buying opportunities, except among
those dealers who choose to "wait things out" and not lower their prices
(which is absolutely their right to do!). I am 100% certain that a few years
from now collectors will look back at this time as a golden buying
opportunity (even if some prices fall even further).

2010-08-13 Thread Helmut Hamm
I'm with Sean on this one, if I see poster that's linenbacked, I immediately
assume that it had some kind of problem.

Unless a poster is already sold and the client requires it, these days I only
have posters linenbacked that have a serious condition issue, that severely
lower the display value. (Like stains in a white background of an otherwise
nice condition poster.)

With all the over-restoration, it's already obvious that many people
(collectors and decorators alike) are already willing to pay a serious bonus
for unbacked items in great condition. I know that I do.

Bruce,
would you say the number of weekly auctions at this point in time has something
to do with there being more items for sale than buyers?
And do you see a few thousand more collectors coming into the hobby the next

I'm still content to buy linen or paper backed pieces - but it very much
depends on the title. It certainly helps to know the condition pre-backing and
if details of the backer are available, even better.

I've been advocating this for a while now.

I've brought it up here once upon a time but it seemed to me it was shot down
for a variety of reasons... Since the Universal fiasco perhaps it's an idea
whose time has finally come.

There's one particular restorer I'd never use again. And I wouldn't buy
anything I knew they handled whether it was superb work or not.

Re: [MOPO] Would you buy.....? Wy I asked...

2010-08-13 Thread Bruce Hershenson
Absolutely! There are over 400,000 eBay auctions for posters alone, and
another half million or more of all other types of movie memorabilia.

If all of those would just "go away" there would be *WAY *more buyers for
auctions like mine and Rich's, and lots more buyers for dealers like you and
Kirby, but of course that is unlikely to happen, until the eBay implosion is
complete, and that might be a year or too off.

I don't know about new buyers coming in, but I do know that the current
over-supply will surely get absorbed (except on the bottom end stuff, which
will NEVER get absorbed) and then the prices will steadily rise and that is
when people will look back at today's prices as a golden buying opportunity.

Really? 400,000 "auctions"?
Or 235,000+ repros, plus another 150,000+ "fishing expeditions" where the
prices are usually Mrs. Miniver high above FMV buy-it-nows, with "only" around
10,000 actual auctions posted - and again a great majority of those are at
starting prices which could be considered FMV or higher.

I would suggest that you run as many auctions on a weekly basis as there are
actual auctions on eBay combined.

Absolutely! There are over 400,000 eBay auctions for posters alone, and
another half million or more of all other types of movie memorabilia.

If all of those would just "go away" there would be WAY more buyers for
auctions like mine and Rich's, and lots more buyers for dealers like you and
Kirby, but of course that is unlikely to happen, until the eBay implosion is
complete, and that might be a year or too off.

I don't know about new buyers coming in, but I do know that the current
over-supply will surely get absorbed (except on the bottom end stuff, which
will NEVER get absorbed) and then the prices will steadily rise and that is
when people will look back at today's prices as a golden buying opportunity.

I think this has more to do with the size of the hobby than anything else.
If there were more than a few thousand active collectors, there would surely be
buyers for posters like these.

Right now, there is an imbalance in the hobby, with more items for sale
than there are buyers. This creates lots of buying opportunities, except among
those dealers who choose to "wait things out" and not lower their prices (which
is absolutely their right to do!). I am 100% certain that a few years from now
collectors will look back at this time as a golden buying opportunity (even if
some prices fall even further).

If prices are SO cheap in my auctions, how come you only buy the very best
items? Why not take some easy money and buy some of those "great deals" and
re-sell them for lots more?

If the items can't be re-sold for more than what I get for them, maybe those

Absolutely! There are over 400,000 eBay auctions for posters alone,
and another half million or more of all other types of movie memorabilia.

If all of those would just "go away" there would be WAY more buyers
for auctions like mine and Rich's, and lots more buyers for dealers like you
and Kirby, but of course that is unlikely to happen, until the eBay implosion
is complete, and that might be a year or too off.

I don't know about new buyers coming in, but I do know that the
current over-supply will surely get absorbed (except on the bottom end stuff,
which will NEVER get absorbed) and then the prices will steadily rise and that
is when people will look back at today's prices as a golden buying opportunity.

I think this has more to do with the size of the hobby than
anything else. If there were more than a few thousand active collectors, there
would surely be buyers for posters like these.

Right now, there is an imbalance in the hobby, with more items for
sale than there are buyers. This creates lots of buying opportunities, except
among those dealers who choose to "wait things out" and not lower their prices
(which is absolutely their right to do!). I am 100% certain that a few years
from now collectors will look back at this time as a golden buying opportunity
(even if some prices fall even further).

This poster is a 1975 reissue.. as stated.. but why do you claim it to
be a rarer reissue? Nowhere in your description do you explain why
that is.

Your opinion simply stating it as rare doesnt make it so.

What makes this a more scarce item?

thanks.

To circle back to the LB part of the discussion, I suppose I am one of the
few that likes to linenback posters to facilitate framing and storage - and
it's certainly no issue to buy a poster already LB, though I prefer to know
who did the work and the pre-LB condition. For me, it's all about the title
and particular artwork. If it's a piece I'm looking for, I'll take it
backed, not backed, any way I can get it!

I would suggest that you run as many auctions on a weekly basis as there
