Ron et al:

The negatives were stolen from Technicolor and ransomed. The ransom was paid
and the negatives were returned. (I don't think it was the entire negatives,
but a substantial amount of footage).

Re: [MOPO] Megalopolis opens Sept 27 / Lionsgate

2024-06-18 Thread Kirby McDaniel
I'll see that in IMAX - for sure.

Oh, by the way, I saw Anthony Mann's THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE in 1964 in
70mm, and I wasn't disappointed! The one epic roadshow film that has never
gotten the Blu-Ray restoration treatment it deserves. Largely trashed when it
was released by critics who were tired of BIG, the film was Ridley Scott's
blueprint for GLADIATOR. Has one of the best Tiomkin scores, and some great
Alec Guinness scenes. Loren was gorgeous. I once had lunch with Anthony
Quayle and we talked all about it. Ha!

I saw OPPENHEIMER in IMAX 70mm film last year (in Dallas) and -- I'll use a
word that I almost never use -- that was A W E S O M E.

Paul,

Hello and Happy Holidays. I'd have to echo what Helmut has said in that I
couldn't say that all of them had this. I believe that we have a few that do,
but I'd have to look. I think if you saw one, you'd have no trouble
identifying it as having been printed with DayGlo inks. DayGlo has a website,
FYI.

"Christ, I'm turning into a curmudgeon."

We can see that, Greg. Try the mescaline again. And watch HAREM SCARUM while
high. You'll see how good it really is. I once watched Ken Russell's THE
DEVILS while high on lsd (I think), and that is a form of exotic self-abuse I
would not recommend to anyone.

It's a real horrorshow. I was removed from the Lakewood Theater in Dallas,

Re: [MOPO] What was the most grueling high rated movie you have watched?

2023-07-16 Thread Kirby McDaniel
The MOST disturbing movie I ever saw was HAREM SCARUM. I kept twisting in my
seat, longing to get out of the theater, and believe me, there was nowhere to
go when I got out of the theater. The film was so excruciatingly monotonous
that I was HORRIFIED. Plus the songs that poor Elvis was REQUIRED to sing were
beyond bad. I could have written better songs myself, and I have never written
even one song. But I'm sure I could have. Plus I was on a BLIND date, and I
was in a deep state of REGRET.

THE SHINING has nothing on this film. It is rumored to have killed EP.

Re: [MOPO] Now THIS is a catalog!

2023-05-03 Thread Kirby McDaniel
An absolutely lovely catalog. I got mine in a priority mail box, the catalog
was shrink-wrapped, very high quality printing and binding. Congratulations to
Grey and to the designers who worked on this. Interestingly, there are some
pages which delineate poster sizes by country. This is very well done, and
gives a better overview of poster options than in any catalog I've seen.

In a word, QUALITY.

Good information. As to whether they retain value, I think that would depend
on the poster. As you might surmise, some are rather ordinary, if not
uninspired, and others are quite wonderful.

Todd,

That is correct. Now the program is called Ebay International Shipping. Folks
moan about Ebay, or fleabay if you will, but their International shipping
program is a plus for sellers. People who know me know that for years I would
only buy on Ebay. But since 2015, I have been selling there also. It has its
ups and downs, but then nothing is perfect, is it? The International Shipping
Program center is in Illinois. Whether Ebay Global Shipping will operate in
parallel with International Shipping ?? ... I'm not sure.

We are not going to send anything valued at over $200 without insurance. It's
a policy that has worked well for us over the years.

And that consideration may be thematic (like westerns in a wood paneled game

It's true.

I take your point. Having said that, sun-faded or something else, I would not
want this poster, either personally or for inventory, because it's not within
the range that was intended. Not for $9000 +, not for $500.

you will, of orange. I have always called it vermillion. Yet we have seen, as
has been pointed out that there are (almost) deep red variants of the poster as

2023-03-12 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Hi, David,

Hi, David and Mopolistas:

I saw your assessment of the BP Oscar nominations on some Facebook Page or
another, and your assessment of THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN is as wet as the
state of California! It's my fave of pictures that I've seen - TOP GUN,
WESTERN FRONT (brilliant, and a dark horse), TAR (yes, I know it has an
accent~)(brilliant) and EVERYTHING ANYWHERE ALL THE TIME SIMULTANEOUSLY,
SYNCRONOUSLY INTERMINABLY ALL AT FUCKING ONCE! (I did sorta like it and I want
one of those rotating donuts). But not AVATAR. Cameron is looking at the
other nominees and thinking to himself "I'm still the King of the World."

INISHERIN is the blackest of black comedies, beautifully photographed. Colin
Ferrell should win the Oscar, but probably won't. (Austin Butler, fine in his
role, is far too pretty for his own good, and Kurt Russell was a better Elvis.)
Brendan Gleason's role is NOT a supporting role, and Barry Keoghan
performance, along with Jamie Lee Curtis, gets the Kirby McDaniel Award for
Performance of the Year. And that's a coveted award that doesn't get given out
willy-nilly.

I always watch the Oscars, and I will this year too. I'm still heartbroken
that CLEOPATRA didn't win Best Picture, but I love TOM JONES. So there.

One final note on the Oscars: they all WANT ONE.

I noticed they have this poster for CHAIN LIGHTNING (which is misspelled as
CHANE), an Italian 39x55. I own the original art, signed by Capitani, and I
will sell it for less than what they ostensibly want for the poster.

This is an Italian 79x55 (release 1949 in Italy) with art by Holzer. The
2f has been seen a couple of times at auction, but not the 79x55. It's
really quite nice, BUT it has tape - a LOT of it - on the verso.

I will sell this for $50 + ship (fedex for overseas) - NO RETURNS. Could
this be restored? The tape is *masking tape.*

Re: [MOPO] Ebay's New Update

2022-05-25 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Jeff,
FYI. We use a hacksaw now, to cut the tubes down to 29 to 29.5 inches. The
fee is then 4.00 or sometimes they do not charge you at all. It's a hassle,
but it saves money and takes about a minute. We have been in touch with Yazoo
Tubes, urging them to make a 29 inch tube. We'll see.

[MOPO] NAISSANCE DE JESUS 55x87.5 (1914) At Heritage Sunday 11/21

2021-11-13 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Mopolistas:

Heritage is auctioning this poster, which I consigned to them, next Sunday
at their signature auction. NOV 21 This is a French Grande, and, it is,
from the perspective
of the postermaker's art, quite stunning. The range of color and detail is
impressive. One of the best film posters I have ever seen. A high-res image
of the poster is available at this URL:

HI-RES IMAGE

Biographical films about Jesus Christ were not uncommon at the inception of
cinema. Several were made in different countries, some as short films and
some longer. In 1913 Pathe Brothers began to film one of the most
elaborate of these films. The film was entitled LA VIE DE NOTRE SEIGNEUR
JESUS CHRIST (1914). It was filmed in four separate segments, which were
exhibited individually and possibly together as one film. The four
segments were entitled NAISSANCE DE JESUS ("The Birth of Jesus"), ENFANCE
DE JESUS ("Jesus' Childhood), VIE PUBLIQUE ET MIRACLES ("Public LIfe and
Miracles"), and PASSION ET MORT DE JESUS (The Passion and Death of
Jesus"). This poster, which dates from the first release of the film in
France, measures 55x85 inches. The poster was published in Paris and the
printer is Atelier Faria, 6 Rue Steinkerque, Paris. A notation at the
lower left reads "IMP des ETABts PATHE FRERES 14. Rue FAVART PARIS". This
beautiful poster is one of the best French posters from the early cinema
that I have seen. Every aspect of the nativity is dramatized: the angels,
the shepherds, the manger, the animals, the star, the Magi. The infant
Jesus, Mary and Joseph are bathed in golden light that shines mysteriously
from within the manger. The poster has been cleaned and linen-backed with
minor touch up. The film was distributed in the United States, both by
Pathe and by Eclectic Film Company. The U.S. title of the film is THE LIFE
OF OUR SAVIOUR or THE PASSION PLAY and the year of import is 1914.

pumpkin; get this poster. Italian four-sheet for the 20th Century Fox drama
HOLLYWOOD CAVALCADE (1939) starring Alice Faye as a young actress trying to
make it in movies just as the films are switching from silent to sound.
Incredible art by Simbar. A strip of film has various film genres in each
frame: epic, comedy, romance and musical. Ameche is shown behind the
camera. Art of Alice Faye in a bathing suit. And Chester Conklin as a
western sheriff. This rare poster is large format - 79 x 55 inches - and
it is printed on two separate panels.

Re: [MOPO] ebay Payments + MORE

2021-07-29 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Ebay has a spotted history, for sure. But they have a wide reach and they are a
good pathway to selling lesser posters. I like the managed payments better
than what went before. The accounting is simpler, for sure.

The credit card companies, on the other hand, are now keeping their fees for
RETURNED sales. They did not do this at one time, but about a year ago they
started. And
this bleeds into all processors, too. (Ebay returns the final value fees which
include their commission for finding a buyer and all other charges and costs.)

Paypal, for example. Let's say one sells a $2000 poster via paypal, that the
buyer paid for with a credit card. And then the poster is returned. Let's say
your merchant fee for credit cards is 2.5%. VISA / MASTERCARD keeps $50.
Let's say your cost for the poster was $1000. After this, it is effectively
$1050.

American Express also does this, whether you are a direct AMEX customers or
whether you process their cards through a third party (like Paypal).

This happened to me with a $4500 poster. ($94.50) I was livid. I managed to
talk paypal into refunding the money, but they told me in no uncertain terms
that if it happened again they were keeping the money.

I was angry with Paypal, and so I went to Chase (my bank) to set up alternate
credit card processing. Chase does it too. But the Chase employee told me,
it's not
Chase that is doing this, it's the credit card companies. A representative at
AMEX claims that they have always done this, but I am skeptical. With
VISA/MASTERCARD this practice went into effect over a year ago. Obviously,
with a $50. item, this is no biggie to sellers, but there is NO CAP on this
practice.

I am surprised that I have not heard more from sellers about this.

In my view, this is almost theft.

But it's legal, because sellers agree to it in their credit card processing
agreements, which I doubt that most sellers even read.

It's not like VISA/MASTERCARD doesn't make TRILLIONS already.

Really, this makes Ebay's stuff look like nothing.

I am not sure if this is the same in every country, but it is in the U.S.

IF ANYONE HAS DIFFERENT INFORMATION THAN THIS ABOUT THIS SUBJECT, I'D LOVE TO
HEAR ABOUT IT.

The Kerry Haggard frauds were artful. I spent $12,000 on one, and was
fortunate to have purchased it from someone who was concerned for his own
reputation. alerted me to the fraud, and returned my money. So it is not at all
unusual that folks would have been taken in by them.
These are not in that class, but just as hurtful if one turns loose his cash
for them.

And, by the way, Jim Gresham is another mensch in this hobby.

Re: [MOPO] Collector's Beware

2021-06-30 Thread Kirby McDaniel
Thanks, Bruce. And thanks to Bruce Hershenson and to Grey Smith and to all of
the members of the collecting community who
have concern for buyers of film posters. And concern for the integrity of
their respective businesses. I had a chance to look at some images
of these items, and I must say that they were mediocre forgeries. But that
doesn't mean that somebody might not be taken in.
