Re: [MOPO] 15 Years!

2010-02-24 Thread LENL48
Congratulations Scott, for a movie poster discussion group well done. It is
the best on the net. A great place to hang out to chat and deal with all
the loyal members of this group.

Kindest Regards,
Lenny

In a message dated 2/24/2010 1:52:21 P.M. Eastern Standard Time,
s...@columbus.rr.com writes:

The Victorian House of movie poster discussion groups (as Rich H.
described MoPo earlier this week) is 15 years old today!

The first MoPo message was distributed via the American University
listserv on February 24, 1995. There had been a brief period prior to that
when
the first MoPo members simply copied their posts to each of the 11 members.
Adam Ehrlich was a student at AU at the time and was able to secure a spot
on their listserv and an automated MoPo began! I'm thankful we're still
able to use AU's listserv all these years later.

We may not have all the modern bells and whistles like some of the
younger discussion groups, but what we have still works...old school it may
be.
I credit all of you, our loyal members, for that! Thank you for being here
and sticking with it.

As I do every year, I want to recognize MoPo's first members...those
people here at the very beginning:

Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen,
Evan Zweifel, George Nichol, Cynthia Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich,
Static555 (thanks to the AOL e-mail system Mr.Static's true identity is
forever
lost) AND myself.

Michael, Rob, and Evan are still MoPo members.

I find it interesting that when there's conflict between those other
poster forums, the debate often takes place on MoPo...case in point the
interesting discussion between MPF and APF that occurred earlier this week.
Perhaps I should take this as a compliment...after all MoPo is known for
fairness, free speech and (most of the time) civility. The respect MoPo has
achieved as the granddaddy of movie poster discussion groups is because of
each and every one of YOU!

Thanks for another great year.

[MOPO] 27x41 One Sheet Poster Frame

2009-11-22 Thread LENL48
Good Day Everyone,

I am looking for an inexpensive 27x41 one sheet poster frame for a friend
of mine. They used to be plentiful at your local Wal-Mart, AC Moore, or
Michael's for a cheap frame at one time. I have noticed, recently, since the
27x40 are more popular, the others disappeared, even though there are
still a lot of 27x41 posters out there.

If anyone knows where I might find one of these frames at a decent price,
please let me know. It will be most appreciated. Thank you very much.

Regards,
Lenny

Hollywood Poster Frames. Anybody ever use this company? What's their
reputation?
Is there another framer that's recommended? I'm in the LA area, so
anything local to LA or OC would be good, too.

Thanks,

Steve Chen.

Bravo! Bravo! My sentiments completely. BTW, when are you going to return to
eBay with your great movie stills auctions? You have been away to long. I'm
sure that your loyal following of buyers miss those great stills that you
offer for auction. You have always been one of the great sellers of movie

The picture you paint has some interesting details but it is not as dark as
you paint it. Life changes and you have to go with it. Before I get into
eBay, let's talk posters in general. When I began poster collecting you were
selling at Christies and also auctions in which you sent out flyers and we had
to call in to buy items. Most of the time I was told that what I wanted was
sold. These were dark days and there weren't many places to get posters.
Movie Collectors World would arrive by overnight mail to my home and I would
spend an hour or more with a magnifying glass and then frantically call to
find
out that what I wanted was sold. We really had no clue as to what was rare
and valuable and what was fairly common. Ebay changed all of that. The
auctions allowed me to really add to my collection. I am fortunate in that I
can afford to buy pretty much what I want and I saw a lot that I wanted. As
time passed more and more people arrived on the scene and we found out what
really was scarce and what was fairly common. The cream has risen to the top.

You applauded ebay and established yourself very well. All of us went into
buying frenzies at the beginning because we thought we were obtaining rare
items. In many cases we did, and many times we did not. I bought many only
to
find out they are plentiful in supply. I bought many posters on ebay and
most are worth much more today but many will never reach what I paid for them.
(I am thankful for the ones that turned out well as they outnumber the others)
Basically, ebay's arrival was tremendous and I will always be thankful it
arrived.

Packing was a problem and still is especially because I buy plaster fragile
plaster statues. However, I have overcome this problem (and with everything
I buy including posters). I email the seller and discuss packing before I
pay. I never pay until I obtain a reply from a seller that I have no
experience with. When the item is fragile and valuable I ask them to take it
to a UPS
store where it will be packed by professionals and I pay a little more. It
is well worth it and I have been fully satisfied ever since. Every seller
has listened to my suggestions for packing and I have not had a damaged item
(due to packing) in quite a while.

Ebay does not enforce categories and I just recently complained on mopo
about Ricksmovie who is flooding the US originals 1940's category with 70s
posters. However, this does not mean I will stop looking. I have noticed a
pattern to Ricks listings so I quickly pass it by. We just have to learn to
ignore
these things so they don't get the better of us. There is no question that
ebay does not care but it is still a very important venue to obtain items for
my collection.

Now for today: I used to spend approximately $30-75,000 per year on ebay
and auctions. This has dwindled down to approximately $15-20,000. This is
not because ebay has become bad. It is because I have bought almost every
poster that I ever wanted. As the years have come and gone I have filled the
roster with my wants. Just as Michael always publishes his want list on mopo,
I
have a want list also. However, it has gotten very small and no matter how
bad ebay has gotten, I will be there if I find one I am seeking. For
example, a few weeks ago I picked up a one sheet of Rose of Washington Square.
 I
have been trying to get this poster for many, many years. There have been no
Chans for auction (that I do not own) for a long time. My sci-fi collection
wants are approximately 5 posters and I recently was outbid on one I was
waiting for. However, there will be

Re: [MOPO] Before We Start A Witch Hunt Let's Pause For A Reality Check

2007-11-11 Thread LENL48
Good Evening All,

I have to say that Freeman is 100% correct in his observations concerning
the use
of lobby cards during the time frame that he has mentioned. Being in
exhibition
management from 1966 thru 1996 full time in the New England area, I too
encountered
what he did in the business. I used to go to the NSS exchanges in both New
York and
Boston, sometimes on a weekly basis, and saw exactly what he saw. Pallets
full of
material that most of the time went nowhere. The main material that was used
in our
theatres and others in my area back then was the ONE SHEET. If we received
anything
other than that we either sent it back or tossed it. Most of our trailers
and pressbooks
also came from NSS. The only theatres that I found lobby cards and large
format advertising
were in the big city theatres that had very large lobbies with a lot space
to advertise. BTW,
the pressbooks also came with mats that were used to cast plates for
newspaper advertising.
I got to know some of the NSS branch managers quite well during these times.
They use to
offer me stuff that wasn't used, all the time, if the material did not go
out say like the first two
weeks of a picture's run. Back then a lot of unused material got tossed or
was mysteriously
lost at the exchanges. When NSS finally folded pallets and pallets of
material found their way
out the back door or landfills. I wish today I had all the stuff that I
refused or threw away. Who
would of known back then what this stuff would be worth today? That's my
observations on this
matter from my part of the world. I too believe, that some of these minty
whites are legit. Heck,
just a few weeks ago I got from technicolor, whom distributes most of the
one sheets today,
single sided one sheets for Rob Zombie's Halloween. Some people in the hobby
think they are
fakes because they are single sided. Not true. They are out there as
originals both ways, double
and single sided. I'm sure that a good majority of poster dealers and
collectors in our hobby today
were never in the exhibition business as some of us in the hobby were to see
what we have seen in
the world of movie posters.

I just want to inject personal observations here with regards to these cards
under suspicion.

Please know that in exhibition, the use of lobby cards in modern theatres
were almost fully being phased out in the 1970's. There simply was no place
to exhibit them.Onesheet frame manufacturers were no longer making
combos. These would be non-illuminated frames that snap-locked into place a
onesheet then two lobby frames underneath where a pair of lobby cards could be
slid into place from an opening on the right side vertical frame. This
amazingly fast phase out was due to the quick embrace of plastic title snipes
that would fit standard back lit boxes or box-office reader boards. Space and
clutter became, suddenly a serious consideration with the multi-plexing
phenomenon. I worked for 4 exhibition companies from 1979 to 2000, and I
never
once ordered or paid for a set of lobby cards EVER. On occasion, a set
would show up at our office or flagship theatres and I can tell you exactly
the
titles that were shipped

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (oversized and regular)
CLASH OF THE TITANS (regular)
ALIEN (oversized and regular)
BLADE RUNNER (oversized and regular)
THE SHINING (oversized and regular)
THE LITTLE MERMAID (only to project picture locations)
NIGHTMARE BEFORE XMAS (only to project picture locations)

That's it. Done. In the late 70's early 80's studio marketers were
becoming radically aggressive with alternate forms of in-lobby POS.Vinyl
banners (ugh) proliferated so fast I banned them from being shipped without
prior approval. Then came the avalanche of counter cards, window stickers,
elaborate standees, mobiles, door panels..so much crap managers were
about to mutiny. One day a bell went off in my head giving me my one
revolutionary idea that is my only footnote in exhibition
history..movie
poster art printed on popcorn bags.and charging the studios for that
placement. HUGE found revenue! Briefly I was a hero.LOL.
Understand I was working for Cineplex Odeon where we had at one point the
most
visible complexes of any circuit in major metro areas, United Artists, AMC,
General Cinema and Redstone, had the volume and quickly 5 individuals
including myself pretty well weighed in what was created and sent to theatres
for
about 15 years running. At no time were lobby cards ever considered. In
less than a year, we 5 standardized and demanded the shipping of rolled
double-sided posters as backlit poster cases ultimately proved the most cost
effective and appealing day to day advertising.

Re: [MOPO] AUTOGRAPHS ON POSTERS

2006-09-26 Thread LENL48

Hello All,
I have a very interesting story about an autograph from Bela
Lugosi.

I was visiting a friend of mine a few months ago and I noticed
an 8"x10"BW portrait still hanging on a wall in the kitchen

area. I had to look twice because I was not believeing what I
saw. Turning to my friend I said "Isn't that Bela Lugosi"? He
said yes and that it was giving to him by his father whom was
working as a checker for Warner Brothers back in the 1940's
when Bela did a stage show at the local Masonic Temple. My
friend's father went back stage and introduced himself to Bela
and as the conversation went on Bela invited him and his wife
out for dinner where he was staying at the Cinderella Inn in
Waterford, CT.

Getting back to the still, Bela autographed the front and on the
back his address: Box 69 South Grand

Elsimore, CA
and phone number: 2168. Thus, a new friendship begun.

I guess you never know where something like that might show
up.

Hi Dave,
Good luck on your auctions. You have a great selection. The
midis that you added to your auctions also bring me back to
the memories of these movies in which I enjoy listening to. I
to add midis to my auctions and I get alot of great comments
about them from different bidders. Keep up the good work. It
really adds live to all auctions.

JR,
What's all the commotion about AOL? I use and have had
no problems whatsoever. I have been buying and selling for
years with no problems. Can someone explain in plain english
what this problem is all about? As far as MOPO goes, there has
been some long stretches where I haven't received any posts.
I feel that there were server problems on their end. What does
this have to do with AOL? Before AOL users get blackballed
more should be looked into the problem. Why single out AOL
users? Its sounds like a case of discrimination.

Re: [MOPO] buying outside the box

2004-12-23 Thread LENL48

Hi Randy,
Thank you for your kind words about you buying from other
people out there other than just auctions. I have sold you
some items that you were very happy with and I was very
happy doing business with you. Your purchases were very
securely wrapped and shipped highly protected. Some of
them were sent right out to you for your inspection before
I even accepted your payment. I did this because I wanted
you to be happy with what you were getting and not be
disappointed. Does anyone else do this? I don't think
so. It is like buying a car. You test drive it first. I call this
good customer service and a way to start a good customer
base. I myself would rather sell outside the box for a few
reasons. The first being a small independent seller I find
it tough selling on auctions sites because I am not one of
the big players in our hobby thus when I put something up
for auction everyone thinks it is a fake because of a low
starting bid. That is not the case. All my stuff is original as
the day is long. I do notmislead anyone in what I have to
sell. Descriptions and images are the best and honest as I
can do. My packing I feel is just as good as the big boys
but yet no one seems to realize that. My feedback is 100%
and still I have problems selling on auction sites. Secondly
I feel that if you are not well known in this business you will
not sell much. I really hate it when some of the big sellers
put down small sellers because they say that they do it right
and nobody else does. Well you know what? There are other
people out there that do it just as well as they do.

Yes Randy you are right, there are other people out there with
the resources and intelligence to do it right. You might also find
a better deal out there.

Happy Holidays to all.
