Subject: [MOPO] 20 Years of MoPo! Well we made it to 20 after all! Today marks
MoPo’s 20th Anniversary. For the last couple of years, our anniversary has been
preceded by a discussion about how little we actually discuss posters on this
forum. This year it was John Reid’s February 12th post, “How MoPo has Changed,”
pointing out the lack of discussion or comment on movie posters. In 2014, in
time for our 19th birthday, Helmut posted an analysis of MoPo posts (84% were
either auction or for sale posts) and former member Bruce H. mentioned how 2
other poster forums are pretty dead. I find it just an interesting coincidence
that this seems to happen just about every February 24th! But no matter…MoPo is
still chugging along. We’ve survived longer than I ever dreamed (much longer
than the majority of Hollywood marriages). On February 24, 1995 the first
official MoPo post was distributed via American University’s listserv. There
were 11 members at the start, and as is my annual custom, I recognize these
MoPo pioneers:  Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh
Kai Shen, Evan Zweifel, George Nichol, Cindy Nemeth-Johannes (we lost Cindy in
2008, but her husband Jay is still a member), Jeff Static (AOL’er Static555),
Adam Ehrlich and myself. In addition to Jay, Michael, Rob and Evan are still
members. Last year I wondered whether MoPo would make it to 20, or if it even
should. Well, here we are and I guess we’ll soldier on…at least until American
University decides to shut down their listserv! I do hate to see longtime
members leave, (Poster seller Bruce Hershenson and the prolific Tom Martin are
2 examples of people who exited this past year), but that’s the way of Internet
forums.  Thanks to all of you for keeping this relic of the 20th century alive
for yet another year! ScottMoPo List Owner   To unsubscribe from the MoPo-L

2012-10-17 Thread Mark Stewart
Brian thanks for staying at the Helm and keeping such a wonderful publication
going for as long as you have. MCW is the place where I first started learning
about the hobby.  I've been a PROUD subscriber since 1990!  I can remember
looking forward to getting MCW, scanning the ads for potential posters, sending
a 19 cent post card asking for picture or even a self addressed envelope with a
couple of bucks for the photos, getting the photos, negoitating the deal and
then getting the posters! Even when ebay came about I still looked forward to
getting MCW with the same excitement.  Brian has been so kind to me even
letting me write a few articles.
Well Brian,  as we say in the Navy Fair Winds and Following Seas.  Remember
old sailors never retire we just get a little dingy.

Subject: [MOPO] R.I.P. Movie Collector's World 1976-2012

I am so very sad to announce that On Monday, October 15 two of the most highly
respected film buff publications, Movie Collector’s World (MCW) and Classic
Images (CI) announced that they had come to an agreement on the sale of MCW.
Classic Images has agreed to buy Movie Collectors World, a Michigan based
newspaper published by Brian Bukantis since 1985. The agreement was made on
Friday, October 12. The two papers, serving movie buffs around the world, will
be merged into one monthly publication. Under the terms of the agreement,
currently active paid MCW subscribers will receive each monthly issue of CI,
beginning with the December issue, for the length of their MCW subscription
term.

Those of you who only joined this hobby the past few years only know of MCW as
a thin magazine, filled mostly with auction announcements and ads for the
foremost dealers.

But for those of us who have been in the hobby for decades, we remember so well
those pre-Internet days when a large portion of the collectors and dealers
subscribed to this then bulging publication, because it was THE number one way
to buy and sell, and pretty much the most important day of the month was the
one when MCW arrived!

This really IS the end of an era. I want to publicly thank Brian Bukantis for
publishing it the past 27 years, and for doing a superb job throughout that
time (of course, the ONLY thing he couldn't overcome was the Internet, which is
rapidly putting EVERY newspaper and magazine out of business, and Brian should
be quite proud that he was able to continue publishing as long as he did). He
is a great guy, both personally and professionally, and he added immeasurably
to our hobby. The ONLY silver lining to this is that Brian's life now won't be
spent going from one urgent deadline to another!

I will have more about this (and a farewell message from Brian) in my next
weekly e-mail club message on Sunday!

PROOF HEARING
Dear Hon. Brian R. Martinotti, J.S.C.:
I am the defendant, Diane Jeffrey, in the above case. I have been informed that
on April 13, 2012 or later, the plaintiff in this case will seek an order from
you granting Final Judgment by Default. I have enclosed a letter regarding this
case, previously sent to the court, for your review.
It is my understanding that since I was not in a financial position to retain
counsel, in order to defend myself, a motion for a Final Judgment will be
granted, against me. I also understand that the plaintiff will be required to
show proof of damages.
As the enclosed letter indicates, I did not interfere with a contract between
Plaintiff and Profiles In History, as said contract was null and void when it
was discovered that the consignment material was fake. Plaintiff can not prove
damages in this case. Therefore, I am respectively requesting that your
Judgment be in the amount, no greater than $1.00.

Dear Judge Powers:
I am writing to you with regard to the above case, which is one of the cases
over which you are presiding. My name is Diane Jeffrey, and I am the owner of
Studio Conservation Inc. I am writing to you due to the fact that I am not
represented by an attorney because I am unable to afford the fees required for
representation. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to advise you
of some very important facts regarding this case:
I have no knowledge of or any dealings with Sal Oliveri, Film Shows, Inc.
Basically, I do not know nor have I ever met this person.
Studio Conservation Inc. was a service business that restored art and
collectible items, including old movie posters.
My first contact with Mr. Rega took place in early 2009 when he hired me to
restore a one-sheet Dracula poster. I restored the poster to Mr. Rega’s
specifications and returned it to him.
Later in the year, a poster with the same title and graphics appeared on the
cover of a catalogue published by the auction house Profiles In History. The
poster was featured for sale in their next auction with an estimated price of
$200,000 to $300,000. It was considered to be a rare item.
Because it was considered to be a rare item and because over 100 other “high
end” Universal Studio horror movie posters had recently been proven to be fake,
this particular Dracula poster was being scrutinized by many in the movie
poster hobby community even though it had a Certificate of Authenticity issued
by Poster Mountain. (Poster Mountain is a vintage poster and fine art
conservation and restoration company.) At that time I did not know if this was
the same poster that I had restored for Mr. Rega; however, there were
similarities in the restoration performed on the poster in the auction and the
one that I had done for Mr. Rega. Thus, I

[MOPO] WTB WINDOW CARDS MOVIE PROMO

2011-11-06 Thread Mark Stewart
Aloha MoPo,

I just received my FIRST midget window card this week and put in up in my
poster room.  All I can say is WOW!  I cannot get over the artwork and size.
It's amazing.  Oh, the card just happens to be a Maltese Falcon!

I have only seen a few up for auction and wonder what you folks have for sale.
I've been collecting alot of universal horror lately, and 50's sci-fi.  Have
not had a chance to check LAMP, but did they stop producing the mini WC's in
the 40's?
Anyway, I would be interested in universal, AC, stuff like that.

I've also been collecting alot of movie promo's the last year or so.  Would be
interested in what you have.  I have a CFTBL handout, king kong puzzle, a Drac,
Bride of Frankenstein herald stuff like that.
I have a repro The day the Earth stood still mask, would like to get an
original.  I am be interested in movie theater exhibitors handouts.

A little of topic, but would anyone know where I could begin to hunt down the
blueprint that hung in Kernel  Klink's office on the TV show Hogan's Hereos?

Many thanks and all the best,
Mark

Re: [MOPO] 27x41 One Sheet Poster Frame

2009-11-22 Thread Mark Stewart
Hi Len,

I have been collecting movie posters since 1990 and once I started framing and
hanging the posters, I have used Sue Heim's frames. She is very professional,
she will make frames to order, like when I wanted to frame my dracula and bride
of frankenstein heralds, I also framed my king kong puzzle and creature from
the black lagoon handouts. I have not had ONE problem with the posters or
frames I've had hanging for the last 20 years.

Good hunting!

 Good Day Everyone,

I am looking for an inexpensive 27x41 one
sheet poster frame for a friend
of mine. They used to be plentiful at your local Wal-Mart,
 AC Moore, or
Michael's for a cheap frame at one time. I have
 noticed, recently, since
the 27x40 are more popular, the others
 disappeared, even though there are
still a lot of 27x41 posters out there.

If anyone knows where I might find one of these frames
 at a decent price,
please let me know. It will be most appreciated. Thank you
 very much.

 Regards,
 Lenny

Re: [MOPO] fraudulent seller alert regarding realart

2009-09-06 Thread Mark Stewart
Be Advised MoPo,

This guy is a crook, I have already filed mail fraud for the poster I bought on
ebay.

When I did an internet serach this bozo used to sell on ebay under jacksgarage2
or something like that.

He even used to post on MoPo.

I posted about this bonehead last month and no less than five people responded
about being ripped off by this guy.

I went out of my way to give him a chance to send the posters I paid for. In
the same week he even sold the same poster twice!!!

I'll file for internet fraud through te FBI IC3 site also. It would be nice to
see evryone that got ripped off to follow through and see this guy hel
accountable for his actions.

Best,
Mark

Parktheater is the same seller that
informed me that the '60's Dracula 1 sheet I won on
Ebay from him had been destroyed in a car wreck.  And
that I would have to wait for a refund until the insurance
money came in.   He was using a different Ebay
name then and took Paypal, so I filed with Paypal and got my
 money back.
 Notice that the
Dracula 1 sht is on his list for sale.  What a

 Most
every one involves the ordering of material which then goes
mysteriously missing after the money has been sent, and
refunds have been very slow to make their way back to the

 Let’s

You guys are all crazy. Best show by a country mile was
 The Andy Griffith
Show, and of course the heart of the show was Don
 Knotts. Everyone knows at
 least one Barney, a know-it-all who can't
do anything right, but who has a
 heart of gold.

Ever notice how Andy started out as a fun-loving drawling
 comic figure, but
as the show wore on, he got crabbier and crabbier. He
 couldn't stand that
Don Knotts won five straight Emmy's and he got none.

One user emailed me suggesting that it would be
better to just use a single

long for my notice to load on

 no wait time at all.
The email notices I create for MoPo, take me over an
 hour to create. (I am
able to use them for other email lists, and don't
 mind spending the time if
 users prefer them).

So, as a user of my email notices, is it preferable
 to present many

Please email me directly, as opposed to posting to

I have been a collector since 1990.

I do sell/trade off posters now and then mainly to
raise monies for new posters or I get tired of them.

[MOPO] NEED SUGGESTIONS FOR DISPLAYING KING KONG PUZZLE 1933

2007-06-14 Thread Mark Stewart
Aloha MoPo,

I just finished putting a King Kong puzzle
(1933 movie promo) together and I want to display it
in a frame.

I was thinking about placing between plastic (similar
to say a comic book) and framing it like a picture.

My one concern is ( need help or guidance here) I
wonder if the paper or ink would ever come off if I
decided to take apart the puzzle later on down the
road?

I would appreciate any help with this.
Many THANKS in advance!!

Lately I've been really interested in movie promos. I
have the CFTBL 1954 one and a few other exhibitor
ones. Anyone else ever come across some cool movie
promos??

Best,
Mark

Re: [MOPO] A shift in thinking, linen-backing slabbing?

2007-04-15 Thread Mark Stewart
Aloha MoPo,

David,
I could not agree with you more

Best,
Mark

--- David Kusumoto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

** I grow tired of pupils from the no
 linen-backing, no restoration school
applying their rules to larger art items like
 movie paper filled with
acid. This is a zero-tolerance attitude that feels
 TOO absolute. If you
collect antiquarian hardbacks, comic books or
 magazines, you can't restore
without hurting value. But what good is owning
 larger movie paper that will
crack or crumble to dust even if handled with latex
 gloves?

** We're not talking about furniture or a Tiffany
 lamp whose value plunges
after its patina is cleaned off or restored.
 Parchment lasts longer,
but it isn't paper. The life span of paper
 decorated with colored inks is
near zero by comparison. As I've said before, for
 some people, presentation
is everything. To me, there's nothing wrong about
 linen- or paper-backing
items that will extend its life and make 'em look
 better with a few minor
touch-ups. Slabbing would drive me out of the hobby
 because you can't
display slabbed posters and it opens up a can of
 worms about UV and fading
and other crap. Besides, Rich is correct. Poster
 collectors are a tiny
 bunch that wouldn't fill a nice-sized yacht. It'd
 take an ocean liner to
accommodate the number of comic and coin collectors
 who live in the USA
 alone.

** Look at how museum curators in NY or SFO treat
 their paintings and
drawings and even movie paper. In some cases,
 they're looking at
 preservation AND restoration. Without restoration,
 Vermeer's Girl with a
Pearl Earring, Da Vinci's Mona Lisa or
 Rembrandt's Night Watch would be
non-existent today or display with many flakes of
 pigment missing. There's
 controversy about restoring frescoes like
 Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, but
less debate about restoring framed art. So when I
 hear people declare that
movie paper restoration is illogical -- I respond
 with this: IF restoring
art on canvas, a material MORE more durable than an
 acid-filled poster -- is
embraced by museum curators, than WHY NOT framed
paper as well, so long as
it's NOT over done? For ex., at the Museum of
Modern Art in NYC, there are
 several three-sheets on display. They're
 linen-backed and not over painted.
At the Academy Awards' corporate offices on
 Wilshire Blvd., there are a
mix of linen-backed/restored and unrestored posters
 also on display. Some
I've seen even look dry mounted on foam core.

** I prefer unrestored paper, but I've got NO
 problems buying vintage
posters backed and touched up so long I know what
 was done, as now
practiced by Bruce and Heritage. Yet some declare
 sacrilegious -- the
practice of de-acidifying, cleaning, backing and
 conservatively restoring
old movie paper. They insist flaws ADD character.
  ADD what? Flaws can
underline how old a poster is, and in some cases,
 they may add charm,
whatever that subjective word means. But the type
of flaws on a poster --
and how many -- will determine whether anything can
 be ADDED and PUSHED into
the plus side of the column while judging the sum
 total of a poster's
 sentimental or $$$ value.

** Yet I know people who will die on the hill --
 declaring tears, folds,
stains, creases aren't really defects -- IF a
poster is at least (fill in
the blank) years old. Well, I won't display an
 unrestored insert on paper
or linen that's crinkled and looks like it was
 sprayed with rust water.
Rust and about 30 tape stains and crinkle chunks
 may ADD character --
but at what point do they transform a poster into a
 large and brittle
newspaper with colored inks -- held together by
 linen with zero touch-ups?
The reason I think collecting newspapers and pulp
 magazines is mostly
inexpensive is because the acid has turned 'em into
 yellowed crap and few
exist, defect-free, despite being printed by the
 thousands. I collect 'em
for historical reasons, but I won't display 'em.

** I agree bad restoration of an old poster is more
 horrific than leaving
that same poster untouched. But in my view, there
will ALWAYS be a need for
great poster restorers. So any effort to start a
 tidal wave against
restoration of movie posters -- will always be a
 non-starter for me.

Re: [MOPO] Collectibles Insurance Agency

2006-08-28 Thread Mark Stewart
Aloha MoPo,

Can anyone tell me if there is an insurance company
that will issue a policy in Hawaii? I called CIA
before I left San Diego to move here to Honolulu and
they stated they could not issue a policy in Hawaii.
State Law or something to that nature.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I would say some valuable items from my vast

very well known long terms movie poster world expert
and appraiser (also a member at MOPO) was called in
to appraise these lossed items. The loss occurred
during my move. I also had to prove these items in
past possession. I had everything documented and the
loss was also confirmed by the moving company that
managed my collection. After I reported it to the
Collectible Insurance agent and they verified my
loss and the appraisal, I was paid immediately. I
think it only took three weeks or so to get paid
after my loss. Very fast response and service from
the beginning to the end. They had me value these
items and the appraiser did not have any questions
in regards to my numbers or valuation. I highly
recommend Collectible Insurance Agency to any
serious poster collector. It is worthwhile to have
piece of mind and they are reputable.

Like many others it would depend on the day and

I would have to say an insert and title card for ALL

But if I had to choose only one right now I would love
to have a R47 Frankenstein one sheet.

So many posters and not enough money

Nice post to CYA. However If I knew of some underhanded business going on and someone on MoPo asked me in a private email so that the same mistake would not happen again, I would share the info.

Last week I posted a notice about restoration work I was doing for twoseparate clients who had brought improperly linenbacked posters they hadbought off Ebay. I pointed out that this was two separate buyers from twodifferent sellers on Ebay. I described what I believed to be questionableif not archivally incorrect procedures and certainly substandard restorationI have received several private emails asking for the names of the sellersand who did the restoration work. I discussed this with friend who is acollector as well as an attorney and he suggested that if I put forth anynames I might as well dump my restoration studio and open a pan-Asianrestaurant and call it SoSueMe.If I was in court as a sworn reliable witness I could relate what I knewabout the client buying history but all of that would be hearsay. I couldb!
 e quite
specific about the condition and archival quality of the postersthat were brought to me for restoration. The poster on my restoration tableis much like an autopsy body and I am the medical examiner. In both casesthe so called linen backing was a hack job and the restoration looked like5th grade art class. But otherwise, hey, Ebay quite cleary makes a point of buyer beware. It isafter all the biggest garage sale in the world. The sellers on Ebay arelearning the jive. If the description says, "some tape on the back," thatcould mean 3 different types of tape on all folds. "Slightly lesser"condition could mean it was once soaked in water and dined on by silverfish."Rare style" could be a Mexican or Australian product. Digital enhancingcan turn an impossibly browned poster into a nice white presentation. Thevivid descriptions and cyber backup have indeed created an entire new way ofselling and buying. Not too much different !
 from the
old days of snake oiland carney hackers.Ebay is still the game and as I suggested to my clients, if it looks toogood to be true then it probably isn't! Re: [MOPO] the ongoing LINEN versus NON-LINEN debate

2005-03-02 Thread Mark Stewart
It used to be that I would never have even considered line-backing or paper-backing any of my posters. There was a time when if a poster was LB'd or PB'd the poster would be worth less. Not today! It's amazing to me what some LB'd postersbring on ebay. Andmost times there is no telling what was done.
However these days I have the philosophy that if I get a poster I truly want and ithas a lot of damage I will have it LB'd or PB'd. Iwill have only the minimal amount of work done. I still like to see some flaws in a poster. It gives the poster character. If I wanted the restoration picture perfect I could commission an artist to paint me a picture. Beware MoPo,

This supposed WC was up for auction about a week ago. I too have checked into this. I kept asking this guy for more pictures, better descriptions, etc... He kept gaffing me off.
I then asked if he would accept escrow.com to protect myself. He would only accept Paypal. I spoke to the winner of the last auction and he had several problems with the sellers paypal account so they never completed the transaction.( Iknow the winner and he is anhonorable collector)To see what the seller would say I asked him what happened to the last auction and the seller said "the winner never responded to my emails so I listed it again".
It has all the red flags of a scam!
