[MOPO] bad pic, NO PURCHASE

2008-06-27 Thread Michael B
i will not buy a poster off ebay with a mere tiny ebay picture of the
poster---even if it is a cheap poster like the one i was considering.

i just received an email from a big feedback seller that he will not supply
additional pictures. this is the third time he has responded this way to me.
a few years ago, i purchased from him and was disappointed because the
description was weak, and the picture tiny.

i dont want to start a war here by naming him.

but, ONLY A FOOL BUYS WITHOUT A CLEAR PIC.

i removed the poster from my watch list

I cannot understand why you would make an interesting post which clearly
makes sense to pursue and then stop short by stating you will not name the
seller. I recently named ricksmovies because they were posting 80's and 70's
movie posters in the US Originals 1940's category. I not only did not start a
war but I got an email from them telling me they corrected their listings and
lo and behold, they no longer are doing this.

Why not name the seller and explain the problem. In lieu of a war, you are
doing the seller a favor. The seller may not know it, but many people might
not be bidding on his posters for the same reason.

I normally agree with you but I believe you are far too liberal here and I
agree with Michael.
Let's begin with G, VG, et al. These are meaningless except in the mind
of the writer who is looking at a poster. The same holds true for pinholes,
tears, smudges, tape and missing paper. It is essential to know where these
defects are on the poster. I can live with pinholes in many parts of a
poster but not in the face of a movie star. The same hold true for all the
other
defects. Dario-Don't you believe a buyer should be told where the
defects are on the poster?

I recently bought a poster on ebay from a seller who had a small picture
and did not state defects. He called the poster very good. I had been
seeking
this poster for about 10 years and was very nervous about it because the
seller was not a regular poster dealer and it was well over $1000. I took a
shot and won at $1400. When it came, it had about 20 small holes in the faces
of the 2 stars. I wanted it, so I asked for a reduction in price. I
complained to paypal and got $300 which paid for the extra restoration needed.
 Had
the poster not been so rare, I would have opted for my money back. My main
point here is this: Had the picture clearly shown the defects, i would still
have won the auction but the bidding would have been much lower. For posters
not that rare (it was Rose of Washington Square if you are interested) I
would not bid at all.

I believe these sellers prefer to maintain generic descriptions to keep
people bidding. If these posters were in really fine shape they would not
have
to be described with tears, holes, etc. However, in fairness to these 2
sellers, most of their material is low priced and reasonably priced. I know
the
DeMaio's a long time and they have always posted prices for their material
just about right or below the market. Bill Luten is a long time seller who
starts at low prices for posters but a lot of his material is overpriced even
though it is a low price.

My suggestion to anyone who wants to buy a poster: Email the seller and ask
where the defects are. The problems arise (like in my situation) where the
seller says there are no defects and there are some when the poster arrives.

Re: [MOPO] bad pic, NO PURCHASE

2008-06-27 Thread Franc
I think you're wise to avoid this seller but I can understand why he
didn't respond to your e-mail. I get loads of e-mails from people who
write asking for additional pictures or special discounts or just stupid
questions about the film itself or where they can buy a DVD of the film
for which I'm selling a lobby card. These are usually from people who
have nothing better to do with their time and even though I try to
answer all of them, 99 3/4% of the time these same people NEVER bid on
anything. Just loads of questions and requests for scans, which I
presume they want to put into their dbase of photos.

I think seller's make a big mistake by NOT offerring their buyers a 100%
guarantee with a no fault return policy. I do this willingly because
even I make mistakes and I know that if a customer feels screwed as
you apparently did, they will not return.

But I don't think in general it's a good idea to bad mouth a dealer on
this board, particularly when the dealer put you on his do-not-bid list
and you circumvented the process by having a friend bid on his auctions.

I disagree with Franc.

Michael said he *did* contact the seller who refuses to send any additional
images. I have no problem with mentioning an eBay seller's user ID on MoPo.
In fact, I appreciate hearing about such situations myself. We're a
relatively small group here (less than 400) and our individual experiences
with sellers can provide valuable information useful to all. A seller who is
less-than-generous with images or condition information can not expect an
endorsement on MoPo. I'm sure WELN's eBay world won't come to an end because
of a little bad press on MoPo. But such information certainly helps me when
making a purchase decision on eBay.

I'm also bothered by Michael's later e-mail where he states his reason for
not initially identifying the image-challenged eBay'er was because he was
previously blasted on MoPo for being too friendly about poster-guru
Bruce H. I've heard this before about posting on MoPo --there is a fear that
stating an opinion will generate an unpleasant response. Wow. That's a
problem!!! Everyone should feel totally free to express their point of view
without fear of taking an electronic beating by other list members. Do
others feel as Michael does? Perhaps my ultra thick skin from running MoPo
all these years makes me totally impervious to such feedback.

i agree with you, 100%. are you talking about the A TRIP TO THE
MOON poster by any chance?

i did write the seller, mrs miniver for better, larger pics
without a watermark that covers the entire poster, diagonally... (the
pics are almost like thumbnails) and was basically told off, in a
rude way, that unless i was serious about bidding, to stop asking
questions,as i had inquired several months ago, as well.

i also had asked about the 75 dollar shipping rate as it was only
going to be sent via Standard Flat Rate service. for 75 bucks, it
should received overnight in a gold lined box.

for a $250K asking price, there should be pics that show every inch
of this poster, in clear, digital detail.

Re: [MOPO] bad pic, NO PURCHASE

2008-06-27 Thread Ron Wisberg

I am also on Michael's side. Personally, I've had fantastic luck with WELN, and
hope that that luck continues, but Michael is not wrong to want better
pictures, nor is he wrong for naming names.

Sometimes when a seller sells many items at once, they don't spend as much time
and detail photographing and describing items as they should, at some level I
imagine most sells professional or casual (myself included) have on occassion
discounted some detail, purposeful or not.

However, when pressed by a potential buyer for extra photos or description, how
could someone not respond positively? I suppose because you don't really care
or want to sell the poster? Hard to imagine.

Ron

P.S.
Glad to see Claude posting semi-regularly, must have some free time, and he
rarely does, so it's nice.
