Re: [MOSAIC] Poetry for inferring
I have used a book of riddles which lends itself wonderfully to inferring. It is: When Riddles Come Rumbling: Poems to Ponder by Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Karen Dugan. The poems have a border around them which I take away so that the students use just the words and context to infer. I use this as a way to model how I leave my tracks of thinking as Chryse Hutchins presented in a comprehension training I went to last year (also author of 7 Keys to Comprehension). Kim in MI --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I remember going to a website and finding several poems that were useful for teaching inferring to primary aged students. Does this ring a bell with someone? Does anyone have the URL? When and where in NJ is Ellin going to be? - Original Message - From: Felicia Barra [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Listserv mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Sent: Monday, December 11, 2006 10:37 PM Subject: [MOSAIC] Ellin Keene's workshop-Seven Strategies Proficient Readers Use Ellin, I hope you see this message. I was to attend your seminar in NJ on Seven Strategies Proficient Readers Use. I bought your book Mosaic of Thought but then read on this mailring that you're coming out with a new edition. Will that edition be available at this workshop? If not, should I wait until the new version comes out before I read it? It's not like I haven't read any books on reading strategies. I've read Debbie Miller's book Reading with Meaning. Also, I'm an avid reader of this ring. Thanks for looking at my post. [MOSAIC] poetry and scrolls; fluency and comprehension
I have been playing with poetry and scrolls for a few years now -- especially with fluency and comprehension -- and have, in the course of this work, developed some materials that some of you might find interesting. * The main document in the set is here: http://www.textmapping.org/millayScrollPages.pdf It provides some basic background which will help you understand the purpose and method behind the exercise. * You'll find the remaining documents here: http://www.textmapping.org/teacherTraining.html#resourcesPrinterReady , about 8 items down on the list, under the heading, Poetry exercise: Afternoon on a Hill, by Edna St. Vincent Millay (4 document set).. This is a deceptively simple poem that works well at many levels (in terms of connections, inferences, etc.), and for students from upper elementary through college. This is still very much a work in progress, so your feedback would be appreciated. If you use these materials, please let me know what you think. Re: [MOSAIC] textmapping and social studies.
Dave! I have just introduced the use of textmapping to one of the fourth grade teachers that I work with. We used it for Social Studies in Guided Reading . I felt it was necessary to model determining importance with our SS book because the content is so dense, and by using the scroll and seeing the whole layout of the unit, the kids had a good idea of what we were planning to do. Not only did we list the elements of non-fiction text, but we could easily determine what was going to be important and worked in groups to highlight important information. Needless to say, modeling everyday has been essential . I certainly feel like the total experience has been great! Taking in slow through the chapter will enable the group to prepare for working in groups in the next chapter... You might want to e-mail Cathy Peterson at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for more information. If you decide to go let me know.
