Re: [MOSAIC] Revolutionary War

2007-04-10 Thread JudiBortle

I have used War Comes to Willy Freeman, Sarah Bishop, Johnny Tremain, and My
Brother Sam is Dead with 8th graders. My students enjoyed War Comes to
Willy Freeman the most, and they liked My Brother Sam is Dead. The other two
were not their favorites, but as usual, it depends on the reader.

Re: [MOSAIC] suggestions for commercial phonics/decoding games and activities

Does anyone have recommendations for particular commercial games or
activities that are good for independent or partner work for kids who need
practice
with phonics/word families? I have Words Their Way and Four Blocks and a bunch
of other books that suggest activities I could make, but I'm wondering if
any of the games I saw in the teacher store this weekend are really great. We
don't have a laminator yet (new school) so coming up with materials on my own
would involve some cost anyway. I teach second grade. You can email. Thanks.

I think this book would make a good book study for this summer. I just
bought it as I was told she (Isabel Beck) had helped with the Scott Foresman
Vocabulary instruction.

Re: [MOSAIC] suggestions for commercial phonics/decoding games andactivities

2007-04-10 Thread Rosa Roper
Hi,
I teach 2nd grade also :)
I just bought Evan Moore's Take it to your seat phonics centers for grades
1-2 and I plan on buying the same book for grades 2-3 for the second half of
the school year. All you have to do is cut them out and laminate- you don't
have a laminator so try using clear contact paper.
You should check out their website b/c they have so many take it to your
seat centers (literacy, and writing) They even have a new book for word
family games that students can play in small groups- everything is in full
color so you save time. These books cost about 20.00 so the cost is minimal.
Hope this helps!

Re: [MOSAIC] suggestions for commercial phonics/decoding games andactivities

2007-04-10 Thread Joy
If you need to laminate things, ask at your teacher store, or at Staples,
Office Depot, etc. The ones near me offer laminating rather inexpensively. One
of the local colleges also has a laminator they allow teachers to use for a
very small fee.

I taught second grade for three years prior to moving to fourth. I bought and
laminated the Evan Moore books, and they are OK, but they are not my favorite.
I found that either the students whizzed through them, or couldn't do them
without assistance. Either way, it was a problem.

If you are going to do centers, I prefer Debbie Diller's Literacy Work
Stations. http://www.debbiediller.com/

If you want to make your own games, this is an invaluable website:
