Do you know who wrote the Milly book? It sounds like a great book.

I second that book. Maybe I like it so much because in November 1991 I
marched in the parade

Have you tried www.kto8.com? It is subcription based but wonderful! You have an
account for each child, and you are able to assign lessons to them, monitor
their progress and even look at their online tests. It's great!

Re: [MOSAIC] Lexiles

2006-10-25 Thread GETTO RO
I'm not sure what some of you might think...but lexiles and levels are 2 very
different things. WE became very frustrated in trying to do a correlations
between the two. We gave up. I think that some classroom libraries are leveled
and kids are in leveled books in guided reading and it just might limit kids in
the library.
If anyone has figured out the lexile and F&P leveling let us know.

I have a question about lexiles and libraries. We are considering
leveling
the books in our library. Has anyone out there done that? If so, is
each
book leveled or are the books in leveled sections? What do you guys
think
about this idea? Part of me thinks kids will feel limited by their
lexile
level, but I feel that if our teachers do a good job of explaining what
a
lexile level is to kids, they will be more informed when they choose
books...what do you think? Just looking for some feedback on a new idea
in my
district.

literature circles. In FSGGR we practice using and integrating the use

I was wonder about how your school uses Chapter Books. There
was a recent question about doing whole class novels/chapter books in
grades 3-5. When working with the comprehension strategies...how may
find it effect doing it as "whole class". Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: [MOSAIC] Strategies and templates for intervention assistance

2006-09-23 Thread GETTO RO
Thanks Carol...
I think the most important part that you mentioned was to create the safety and
the time to do the training. Our district also wants to have skilled aides and
the issue is getting the fiancial backing to do the on-going training.
I also like the idea of a "study group".They might learn from
Debbie Miller tapes and her approach. There will be a high level of
accountability for this intervention aide position and are we making gains with
the students in need of improvement. The model looks to be intense pullout 3
to 4 times a week for 20-30 minutes. Were you are to develop a template for a
lesson that they might follow? My other conern is isolation..now they will be
the Intervention aides responsibilitynot the classroom teachers
responsibility.
Anyone else have any ideas...they would be greatly appreciated...

Hi Ro,

I have trained aides on reading strategies. The district's goal was to
have
skilled aides who could provide support in extended learning
opportunities
for SPED and ELL students.

I found that if I embedded the "why's" with the "how's," they were able
to
perform at a higher level. We used a constructivist model and had lots
and
lots of dialogue (book study style). We created a safe learning
environment
and started where they were based on their current knowledge and needs
(h, sounds like a classroom). We discussed reading theory (they
loved
it), critiqued videos, and observed models with students that included
think-alouds. They also received coaching and feedback when they tried
it
on their own.

It was ongoing training and took some time, but it was worth the
investment
as, in the end, we had aides who could think their way through the
lesson
rather than follow a prepared script.

Hope this helps,
Carol
