Re: [MOSAIC] Phonics program

2011-01-31 Thread Jeana Wise
My son's kindergarten class uses Rowland Reading Program and he loves it. It
introduces letter and sounds as a Superkid character, integrating each
superkid into reading and writing, and emphasizes blending the letter sounds
all throughout the program. As a former first grade teacher, it really seems to
work...and I'm usually skeptical of programs.

Re: [MOSAIC] academic transition classrooms

2011-01-29 Thread Jeana Wise
In response to:

That way reading can be taught all day long with more help in that one
particular classroom?

Um reading being taught all day? No other subjects? I'm confused. What
about equal access to the curriculum?

My school district is unique in the fact that each grade level is at a
different building. Fact is we have a large portion of students struggling in
reading, in school improvement, have approx. 85+ free/reduced lunch, high ESL
population. None of that matters when it comes to our state testing and we have
to get our scores up. Besides making sure that our quality of teachers is rich
in teaching reading, we have to get creative and get our of our situation.

I'm not talking about ability grouping. Yes, we are in the situation that we
have to get our students able to read on level. If they are not able to read on
level, they will fail in the other subjects because they won't be able to read
the texts, comprehend science and social studies, etc. In deed, reading can be
taught across the curriculum by integrating it into content. Science poetry
mentor texts is a prime example. Interactive guided reading writing, too.
We have some students who are just on the verge of being proficient, too. They,
too, just need extra support to get to that mark.

I was approached this scenario, haven't heard anything pro or con about it. I
also know that it takes teachers strong in reading to help those who are
struggling. The students who are on-level and above will more than likely do
well in spite of anything else. Just a question, perse...no one wants to do
anything that would be detrimental to students.

And to another reader, it may take extra co-teaching with the limited number of
extras we have and without hiring new teachers. Budget is tight! Any other
thoughts are welcome!

[MOSAIC] cursive writing

2010-11-05 Thread Jeana Wise
I don't really know if this will be accepted since it is about cursive writing.
I understand if not.

I am looking for verbal prompts for teaching cursive writing. We are learning
that common language helps accelerate our students learning. We have language
for manuscript, but the upper grades need help with teaching cursive.
Handwriting is not the focus, but it definitely helps when trying to teach
students to write their known words quick and fast and slow down on harder
words. If they don't know how to write the letters or the letters are not
legible, there can be problems.

Re: [MOSAIC] DRA

2010-09-14 Thread Jeana Wise
I could not agree more about the use of comprehensive reading assessment tools.
Having been a Reading Recovery teacher, I find listening to a student read and
watching them write gives me tons of information. However, this year my
district has made a few changes due to being in school improvement. Whether I
agree or not, I have to do what the district states. At one point we were going
to look into the DRA 2. However, they decided that with Aimsweb, it may be too
much for all the teachers to do until they get comfortable with Aimsweb. I'm
assuming it is because it is a data management system and right there in front
of them to help place students into the 3 tiers for RTI. I also think that
maybe all 4 of our elementary schools were doing things so differently that it
provides a common ground for continuity. You may contact me offline for more
info.

[MOSAIC] assessment and data

2010-09-14 Thread Jeana Wise
Mary, would you be willing to share one of the teacher-created assessments? My
district has made them for math, but for some reason has not gotten there for
reading. I love the idea of creating one and adapting it according to the
standards and/or our state objectives in which our students are not mastering
year to year when we go through the reports.

[MOSAIC] literacy models

2010-03-29 Thread Jeana Wise
Is there any schools/districts who are not invested in a program or series
and using a comprehensive literacy model approach finding data and research
providing the effectiveness? I am wondering because I am in a school that once
had a balanced literacy model implemented then when administration and times
changed, so did the model and they went with a basal series to provide
continuity which some teachers need and love and left others feeling
hopeless. I have been looking at models again but know that with funding
issues, implementing a model in its entirety may not be the most effective if
it doesn't get implemented in it entirety! So, are there any schools that have
created their own literacy frameworks and allows it to grow and change based on
their students' needs?

[MOSAIC] literacy coaching

2010-03-05 Thread Jeana Wise
Our school isn't adding a position necessarily so hopefully literacy coaching
will stick for awhile with all the budget cuts. To help narrow my initial
question about coaching, What does scheduling look like? I have heard of 2
week cycles, 8 week cycles, and learning labs where it is all year long for
more results. k-4 is spread out in 4 schools with 8-9 classes per grade level.
We want to do literacy team meetings in all buildings. Is it best to start with
k-1 classrooms and move to another grade each year it is implemented?

[MOSAIC] literacy coaching

Does anyone have any suggestions for literacy coaching? My school will be

[MOSAIC] leveled literacy intervention

2010-02-20 Thread Jeana Wise
Wow, thank you so much. I am new to this group; however, I have reviewed many
of the resources, powerpoints, and lesson ideas the past two years and am
grateful for having ran across the resources and group. Thanks so much for your
responses. My district is currently in the process of going schoolwide title.
Therefore, we are in the process of implementing a program or model to help
with this comprehensive school reform. Leaving first grade after 6 years and
training this year for Reading Recovery to find out we will no longer use this
program of intervention for our struggling readers, I am very bummed. I feel
that if we persue the balanced literacy we once had in place along with our
scope and sequence we may be able to make school improvement. In addition to
all this we are looking into making one of our title teachers into a literacy
coach. This is something I have wanted for a long time in order to provide
professional development opportunities to other teachers who are missing out on
all the great research and strategies that are out there! It is also scary for
the fact that I have no idea how long this position will be available due to
budget cuts and high expectations for change. With that being said, my district
is much like any other district looking into all the things that are out
there to improve instruction and data. Out of all the assessment tools and
instructional tools I have reviewed, I have been interested in the LLI even
though I do not promote programs! I feel that it is important to help children
think and learn; however, I often wonder why we are teaching them to do well
with a program and look at the transferability among other aspects of
life--it's not there! The LLI does seem like a better way to address reading
with actual BOOKS.

I personally am not fond of AIMSWEB or DIBELS. It seems as if those children
who read well, fail and those who don't read well...are not being measured in
instructional ways even though there are parts that I feel can be expanded in
the classroom as literacy instruction (cloze reading is a good strategy for
reading /predicting a reasonable word that is tricky without losing meaning).
Being a Reading Recovery teacher, I feel that the OS is a better indicator of
strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!
Jeana

[MOSAIC] leveled literacy intervention

2010-02-19 Thread Jeana Wise
I am wondering if there is anyone who has used leveled literacy instruction
(LLI)? I am training for Reading Recovery this year and my school will not be
continuing this program next year in order to meet the needs of more students.
Instead they are hoping to use the RR strategies with more students. LLI seems
to be very similar in parts. Has anyone used this? Is it effective?
