[MOSAIC] comprehension going forward
Great selling of the book talk. I was deliberating whether to purchase this...and after reading everyone's comments I bought it today!! It would be wonderful as a PD staff training session or just a reference handbook. If anyone would like a better insider's view, www. Amazon.com sells the book and offers wonderful excerpts from each author. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org Search the MOSAIC archives at http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive
[MOSAIC] phonics in 50's and 60's
I taught in 70's and used the Sullivan phonics program. An awful self-correcting workbook where the kids filled in the missing letters to complete sentences like I am a man The man has a pan. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org Search the MOSAIC archives at http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive
[MOSAIC] kindergarten and sight words
In response to Katie's question about sight word retention in kindergarten: ?Not all children might be developmentally ready for sight word identification. However Patricia Cuningham's word wall approach could be effective.?The words are cut out in their configuration.? The teacher talks about the individual letters that make up the word and the kids bodily cheer/clap the words- raising arms up for tall letters and bending for letters that have tails. They are?displayed on?a word wall- that should have the alphabet and their names/pictures?displayed. Follow up would be? word hunts using read around the room or highlighters? and also a read ,make write sheet-sheet? divided into three columns- they read the word, use a stamper or letter tiles to make the word, and then in the last column they wite the word.?Rainbow write? magnetic letters can be used?to make words and play mix-it fix it. There are many companies that make simple blackline?sight vocabulary books that can reinforce their word knowledge. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. [MOSAIC] ability grouping kids
Your principal's idea about grouping almost reminds me of the bluejays, sparrows and crows from the fifties. Flex grouping is to be exactly that-flexible. By grouping kids in separate classes you are setting and lowering the bar of?expectations for all of?them and they will live up to your expectations. Is the ability determined by decoding or comprehension? Kids that can't decode can still think! By modeling strategies in readers workshop whole group?,??and?guided practice with peers? all can then?apply independently the strategy?at thier own reading level in small groups within the same classroom. I would order some Debbie Miller and Ellin Keene learning videos for your school. Real reading in the real world. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. [MOSAIC] student blurting out answers
Our school system uses the Collins type writing program.? A type 1 (brainstorming) response can help you evaluate what kids know as well as give everyone a chance. Here is how it goes: you pose a question and students? jot down on paper as many ideas that they can gather in a short time-??( spelling is not an issue-it's just getting down ideas in a designated short timed period). Teacher can walk around and casually look over students' responses and then ask for volunteers to share responses .? This way everyone gets a chance, the yteacher is able to see who needs further support?and those that lack background knowledge learn from their peers. Another strategy would be just to pose a question and have the children turn to a partner and share their thoughts quietly. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
