Re: [MOSAIC] I need suggestions about assessments
Hmmm. Interesting. I think we are moving in that direction as well. It is used in our elementary schools. Stay tuned. Re: [MOSAIC] RTI - Any info on AIMS Web?
This is our first year using AIMSWeb at the middle school. It is helping us to identify students who may need an interventionbut we use additional data to make those decisions. We have made errors with student placements into interventions, but it is a starting point. All students get the MAZE three times per year. Students who score in the bottom 25% get a CBM. Then we look at their CBMs and other data to decide further action. The jury is still out as far as whether or not it has been useful. I feel that perhaps we could be doing the same thing by more closely analyzing the data we already have. Our students are tested to death...MAPS 3 times per year, ISAT, and AIMSweb 3 times per year. TOO MUCH! Barb On Tue, 9 Feb 2010 18:20:36 -0600 reading readingwritingliter...@gmail.com wrote: We use it at the middle school level. Re: [MOSAIC] MS Literacy Closets/Book Rooms

Re: [MOSAIC] Middle School Literacy Closets
We do have a literacy closet in our middle school. We've had it for about 10 years, but it has been beefed up in the last five. I am the literacy coach and am also in charge of it. [MOSAIC] Special Education Reading Programs
Hello Everyone, I am a literacy coach working in a middle school in a district that is deeply committed to MOT strategies, but our self-contained SPED population is not making AYP, thus this requestWe are going to adopt a reading program...it is just a matter of which one. I don't necessarily agree with this idea, but it is going to happen whether I like it or not. I desperately need some suggestions for tried and true programs that are out there. Actually, my first choice is Read 180 which we already have, but I'm not sure that they will consider putting in another entire program for SPED. I work with grades 6-8 in a district with a large ELL population. Any suggestions? I feel the collective minds on this list have been excellent problem solvers in the past. My research leads me to the following programs: Language! Wilson, Slant and SRA. Does anyone use these programs? Are there others we should consider? Can anyone help?? Re: [MOSAIC] your best VISUALIZING lesson
I love to use the poems of Valerie Worth (All the Small Poems). I use them in middle school. My favorites are Pumpkin and Fireworks. Give them the poems without the title. Re: [MOSAIC] I need some middle school book suggestions
I have to say the hottest book right now is Marley: A Dog Like No Other by John Grogan. Although it was originally written as an adult book, the author has created an adaptation for ages 8-12. It is wonderful! I read aloud a chapter called The Things He Ate to 5th graders yesterday and they ALL wanted to check it out! It is a must have for grades 4-8. I would estimate the reading level as about 4th grade. I would also recommend adding Owen and Mzee. It is the story of the friendship that has developed between an orphaned baby hippo and a tortoise. It is heartwarming! There's a sequel as well. Have fun! [MOSAIC] Lexiles
I have a question about lexiles and libraries. We are considering leveling the books in our library. Has anyone out there done that? If so, is each book leveled or are the books in leveled sections? What do you guys think about this idea? Part of me thinks kids will feel limited by their lexile level, but I feel that if our teachers do a good job of explaining what a lexile level is to kids, they will be more informed when they choose books...what do you think? Just looking for some feedback on a new idea in my district. barb ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
