Hmmm. Interesting. I think we are moving in that direction as well. It is
used in our elementary schools. Stay tuned.

Has anyone used Fountas and Pinnel in middle school? My principal is
 heading in this direction.

Re: [MOSAIC] RTI - Any info on AIMS Web?

2010-02-10 Thread Barbara Underdown
This is our first year using AIMSWeb at the middle school. It is helping us
to identify students who may need an interventionbut we use additional
data to make those decisions. We have made errors with student placements
into interventions, but it is a starting point. All students get the MAZE
three times per year. Students who score in the bottom 25% get a CBM. Then
we look at their CBMs and other data to decide further action.

The jury is still out as far as whether or not it has been useful. I feel
that perhaps we could be doing the same thing by more closely analyzing the
data we already have. Our students are tested to death...MAPS 3 times per
year, ISAT, and AIMSweb 3 times per year. TOO MUCH!

I would work to create theme/unit related bins of differentiated materials

What I am looking to begin developing is a resource room that has
literature that not only reading/language arts teachers can access but
one that will have content for all areas. We are moving to a middle
school model from a junior high model, so we'll be working extensively
on interdisciplinary design in the next year. The more resources I have
at various levels for teacher to access during their planning, the more
likely they will be to utilize the resources!

The second category is picture books in sets sized for half the class.
 I pair
two of these sets around a common theme and then develop a scenario
question that students have to write to answer and include details from
the books to support their answers.

 Nicole,
Would you be willing to share the titles of this category with the
list? This is exactly what I am planning on doing in my 7th grade
classroom! In Michigan, our students need to write about a common theme
between a fiction and nonfiction reading selection. I would also like
to see some of the prompts/questions that you use.

We do have a literacy closet in our middle school. We've had it for about 10
years, but it has been beefed up in the last five. I am the literacy coach
and am also in charge of it. If you would like to talk to me off list or have
a phone conversation, I can be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm in Melrose

[MOSAIC] Special Education Reading Programs

2007-12-17 Thread underdown
Hello Everyone,
I am a literacy coach working in a middle school in a district that is deeply
committed to MOT strategies, but our self-contained SPED population is not
making AYP, thus this requestWe are going to adopt a reading program...it
is just a matter of which one. I don't necessarily agree with this idea, but
it is going to happen whether I like it or not. I desperately need some
suggestions for tried and true programs that are out there. Actually, my
first choice is Read 180 which we already have, but I'm not sure that they
will consider putting in another entire program for SPED.

I work with grades 6-8 in a district with a large ELL population. Any
suggestions? I feel the collective minds on this list have been excellent
problem solvers in the past. My research leads me to the following programs:
Language! Wilson, Slant and SRA. Does anyone use these programs? Are there
others we should consider? Can anyone help??

Re: [MOSAIC] your best VISUALIZING lesson

I love to use the poems of Valerie Worth (All the Small Poems). I use them in
middle school. My favorites are Pumpkin and Fireworks. Give them the poems
without the title. Ask them to draw based on what they visualize. It is
great fun!

Re: [MOSAIC] I need some middle school book suggestions

2007-05-18 Thread underdown
I have to say the hottest book right now is Marley: A Dog Like No Other by
John Grogan. Although it was originally written as an adult book, the author
has created an adaptation for ages 8-12. It is wonderful! I read aloud a
chapter called The Things He Ate to 5th graders yesterday and they ALL
wanted to check it out! It is a must have for grades 4-8. I would estimate
the reading level as about 4th grade. I would also recommend adding Owen and
Mzee. It is the story of the friendship that has developed between an
orphaned baby hippo and a tortoise. It is heartwarming! There's a sequel as
well.

Have fun!

I have an opportunity to add some middle school books to our library and
was wondering if I could get some titles of the most popular books with
your kids right now. I am especially interested in 6-8 grade interest
level, but a reading level between 3-6. If they you know that they are
AR books that is even greater.

Thanks for all your postings this school year, I have benefited!

Re: [MOSAIC] synthesizing

I love the book Locomotion by Jacqueline Woodson. It is a story in poems and
meaning changes as the reader gets information about the main character's
life. I've used it to model synthesis for 7th graders.

[MOSAIC] Lexiles

2006-10-23 Thread underdown
I have a question about lexiles and libraries. We are considering leveling
the books in our library. Has anyone out there done that? If so, is each
book leveled or are the books in leveled sections? What do you guys think
about this idea? Part of me thinks kids will feel limited by their lexile
level, but I feel that if our teachers do a good job of explaining what a
lexile level is to kids, they will be more informed when they choose
books...what do you think? Just looking for some feedback on a new idea in my
district.
