Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit
Hi Pam, I work in a grade 3-4 school and my teachers compared the Comprehension Toolkit (not the Primary Kit), the Grade 3 Sundance Nonfiction Comprehension Strategies Kit (They also do have a fiction kit), and Mondo's Now I Get It. My teachers much preferred the Sundance Kit. It was easier to use and includes interactive practice cards, leveled reading selections, take-home readers, a writing link, a family letter for each strategy, etc. I typed up a comparison of the 3 kits. If you think it would be helpful, I can send it to you. Linda From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: May 19, 2008 10:27:53 PM EDT To: mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit Reply-To: Mosaic: A Reading Comprehension Strategies Email Group mosaic@literacyworkshop.org Yes I need some more comparison information about the primary toolkit vs. Sundance's comprehension strategies kit. I, too, will be purchasing with my own money. I received some samples from Sundance and I can tell that this company has two parts in its set a ficition sampler and nonfiction sampler for asking questions. I am assuming that all the other strategies follow this same format using both genres. I notice a teacher's guide with a CD, strategy posters, modeling transparencies, practice cards, and three leveled selections (above, on and below level) for each strategy geared to first grade.. Can some of you compare this with what the primary toolkit from Heinemann has to offer. Your speedy response would be greatly appreciated.. Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit
Hi Linda, Thank you for your immediate response. Please do send me your comparison notes... they would help me out a lot. I am working with our literacy coach to pick the right resource the district is not willing to commit to any kit unless they see some results I have tried to get them to pick up the tab for my pilot but they are not budging considering it less than prescriptive if not completely made by our teachers.. But to my mind I would like to see what exactly is involved in writing these kits before we attempt our own ventures. If it is not too time consuming, please forward your notes to me. Thanks again. Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit
Christina, The more I talk to colleagues in and out of my building, the more I'm discovering teachers who have quietly strayed from the basal and are implementing (OR wishing they had the training to implement) the strategies of Harvey and Goudvis, et. al. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised someday! Beth So far, I am the only one in my school implementing the strategies based on Harvey and Goudvis ( I know, I can hear the gasps already! ). Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit
The literacy coordinator at my school is looking into purchasing both the primary and intermediate comprehension toolkits. I teach 3rd grade and was wondering which toolkit would be better to use. I've heard the intermediate toolkit is pretty challenging for 3rd graders. I plan on going through the kit(s) this summer and breaking the lessons into 15 minute mini-lessons so I can use them during Reader's Workshop. Any input on which toolkit would be more appropriate for 3rd grade would be much appreciated. If anyone else has used these toolkits to create mini-lessons I would love to get your advice on how you went about it. Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit
Deciding which one would be appropriate will depend on a few things - the primary comprehension toolkit has just been released so those that actually have it in hand are the first people to be seeing it and using it in the classroom - I am anxious to hear what those of you who have it, think! I am a Literacy Coach and I have used the intermediate toolkit at a variety of levels including Kindergarten. Obviously modifications concerning the sample texts, articles and my vocabulary with the kids are made depending on the situation. When going into a classroom I take into consideration the age of the students, their previous comprehension instruction, the range of reading levels in that classroom and their background experiences. The principles of comprehension instruction are easily adaptable for all grade levels. So... whether you need the intermediate or the primary will depend on your kids - their previous comprehension instruction (if they've had any), their background experiences and their reading levels. Again, I'd love to hear from anyone who is trying out the Primary Comprehension Toolkit. Re: [MOSAIC] Primary Comprehension Toolkit
When I moved from 3rd to 6th, I used the Toolkit to get me started (long story, but I went from 3rd, to spending a summer thinking I would be teaching Kinder to teaching 6th grade). It is a great resource, and after you've used it for a year, you get to know what types of readings you could use to supplement or replace if both 5th and 6th are using the Toolkit.
