Are any of these test reasonable in price?  The teachers would be paying for

Pat,
Our school administers the NWEA tests, at the beginning of the year and at the
end.  In addition to all the data we get
from those tests, the lexile score is included.  I have my classroom library
leveled that way.

Don't know if this helps but just another piece of the puzzle ; -)

P.S. Thanks for all you do . . I've read your posts for a few years.
You are a big help!

Re: [MOSAIC] mentor texts for readers workshop?

2011-12-15 Thread Renee
Make sure they have access to reading materials that interests them,
and ask them every now and then... "What are you reading about?" and
"Can you tell me more?" and "It says here Why
do you think this character is doing this?" etc. You might need to
refine your questions in ways that support students' giving answers,
but the comprehension will come more easily if they have chances to
talk about their books. Not write. Not answer questions. Not do a book
report. Just talk. OR maybe draw a picture of something that
happened in the story, THEN talk!

Re: [MOSAIC] mentor texts for readers workshop?

2011-12-15 Thread Renee

Hi There,

I have found that what works better than anything, costs nothing, and
requires no prep, is to have them talk about their reading when they
are finished, and to listen to others talk about their books as well.
If you have a few of these students, you might make little "sharing"
groups of maybe four students each, who can share and ask each other
questions about their books. If it helps, they could have some generic
question prompts to use. I used to do this. I had very generic
questions that I had on card stock and laminated, kept in a basket
right on the bookshelf.

Re: [MOSAIC] mentor texts for readers workshop?

2011-12-14 Thread Sally Thomas
I agree with you Jennifer, It's about the strategies that we know,
modeling, gradual release by having kids apply strategies and thinking
through turn and talk and sharing out. It's about the gift of time - this
doesn't happen immediately for every child. Lots of time for children to
gradually make this their own!!! I think even the best of us sometimes
think it's always going to happen quickly. I always always remember annie
sullivan telling Helen keller's mother - when she asked how long it would
take for the finger spelling to reach Helen - that it might take a million
(I think that's what she said ) times but it did happen. Not that we need a
million times but I found that I always had to to give it the time that was
needed!!!

2011-12-14 Thread donnfox
Children of all ages love to record themselves and hear their voices. Recently
in my guided reading groups i have been modeling oral reading and pausing to
think aloud the active reading strategies that come to mind; connections,
asking myself questions etc. If you have access to ipods or recorders i
recommend this acttivity. I assign a passage or a few pages for them to read
and record. When we play it back and listen, i make them track with their
finger so they can analyze miscues and hear how they sound. It helps build
fluency and comprehension

They are "word callers" and are not reading on or above grade level if they
can't comprehend! Drop the reading level until they can comprehend.

Hi Everyone,

I need your help. What activities would you suggest for 1st graders who read
on & above grade level but struggle with comprehension?

Try www.readworks.org
A free site if you sign up  a user account.  There's lesson plans for concepts
of comprehension, reading passages with questions, and recommended read aloud
book titles and suggested teaching points.
Also, Linda Hoyt's Read Aloud book is great. (not sure what the actual title
is.)

Have you seen the books by Lynne Dorfman? She has 2 mentor text books, one
fiction and one nonfiction. They are great references. If you type mentor texts
on amazon, they'll come up for you to take a look at.
