have you tried text boxes in the shape of the letter such as boxing the word the with two tall boxes and one short. He can also go on a word hunt around the room , in magazines and of course in stories each week. If possible have him highlight the words. Just a few ideas we use sometimes. Good Luck! Re: [MOSAIC] mosaic@literacyworkshop.org
Jessica, Most likely this little boy is struggling with sight words... especially out of context because they have no real meaning or use for him ... especially out of context. As for memorizing sentence frames... does he have experience with tractors or boats, or are these just words with no schema to which they can be attached? If they are not familiar concepts, then the words will take longer to learn. Try using "key words" in some way (someone suggested writing his own sentence on the back of cards with the words on them, to add context), and language experience, where he draws pictures and dictates sentences to go with them which an adult can transcribe. As for spelling tests, I just have to say that I consider them an antiquated strategy that simply will not go away. Is there anything more meaningless than a list of unrelated, isolated words out of context? I don't get that. I know practically everybody does them, but this is one thing I would drop like a hot potato if I could get away with it. My two cents. Good luck! Re: [MOSAIC] mosaic@literacyworkshop.org
Don Holdaway (of Big Books fame) had us teach the sight words almost like the "key words" strategy of Sylvia Ashton Warner. The child gets to create his own sentence using the word and writes it on the back of the index card. Can illustrate as has been suggested if he wants. He makes it his own. Does the same with a few more. Works with no more than 5 words at a time until he has them. Gradually adds in words to keep the current working pack at 5!!! It's a strength that he reads them in context - which is a scaffold. Just probably needs more time as has also been suggested! Re: [MOSAIC] mosaic@literacyworkshop.org
I had a kindergartner with the same problem. I started playing High frequency word Bingo with him. He learned the words to win the game. He had to say the words and find them on the bingo game card. For some reason he was more motivated to play the game than spell the words for a test. I never figured out why but it worked. 8 new words at a time PatK On Nov 14, 2011, at 7:13 PM, Palmer, Jennifer wrote: It may be he is not ready for this developmentally...
