Re: [MOSAIC] Benchmark Testing

2012-04-08 Thread Deb Lawson
My district uses the DRA and the benchmark assessment from our reading series.
We give the DRA in the fall and spring to everyone. If a child is below grade
level we also give them the DRA in January.

In North Kansas City School District we use AimsWEB and Fountus & Pinnell.
I do not like Aimsweb for progress monitoring however. When you progress
monitor with a Maze test, it often does not match what the intervention is.
I do not like that.

Re: [MOSAIC] Benchmark Testing

2012-04-04 Thread CAG
We benchmark with the Universal Screenings. That's one flag. Then we take
into consideration teacher observations/classroom data and the NECAP
(standardized test for the region), recognizing it tests in the fall over
last year's (and past) learning. Unfortunately, the results aren't available
until the spring, so that's pretty useless for intervention purposes. That
will change with the CC assessments, as info will be available immediately.
We use diagnostic testing after deciding that the data shows student need.
Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System is a powerful diagnostic tool.
I use other tools as well to pinpoint phonics or multi-syllable weaknesses.
The F&P BAS has decent comprehension information, and we can look at trends
using that information.

When you say 'essential skills' that were taught over the specific period of
time, are you referring to the skills that the diagnostic testing would show
a student needs? That's what's considered Progress Monitoring. I try to
tailor the PM to the intervention. Sometimes the PM depends on the grade
level or developmental level of the student. In many cases, running records
are good PM's. I hope this makes sense.

Hi Marsha

I'm in California and am looking for the same type of information for kinder
and grade one.

Our district uses curriculum associates tool for grades 2-8. We give it 4 times
a year. It is directly aligned with CA standards and has a math and Ela
component.

A friend of mine said they use
PALS in VA for the younger grades.

Some districts around here are using DRA.
I'll email more info regarding CA districts as I find it.

Do you know what type of tools are used for K-1 in your area?
Sandy.

Re: [MOSAIC] Benchmark Testing

2012-04-03 Thread Paula Adams MS
We have used a multitude of assessments in the past that gave us numbers.
We felt we were on top of things and monitoring everyone but the numbers
didn't correlate strongly with our state assessments. Therefore, we
provided support to some kids who performed well and no support for others
who performed significantly below expectations.

We continue to use the SRI (Scholastic Reading inventory on the computer)
because of its practicality but its not perfect. Some kids can sustain
themselves in completing short passages and yet can not hold onto ideas
and sustain their comprehension across an entire book of the same
level...and there is no writing. It renders a lexile which is helpful in
placing students in materials and montoring for growth - not a diagnostic
instrument. We also use Fountas and Pinnell's Benchmark Assessments which
are not practical. Therefore, we only use this on students who have
receive scores below the state's standard or "3" and those students who
the SRI shows are below level. Middle school level assessment is
troublesome because of sheer numbers of students. This assessment helps
you understanding the general area of weakness to focus on for
instruction. I hope this helps.
