Susanne - thanks. This might be just what I've been looking for to help me
do RTI in comprehension.

Also, I just started reading a book called "Comprehension Connections,
Bridges to Strategic Reading" by Tanny McGregor. It's perfect for making
abstract reading concepts more concrete. For example, I just made a Reading
Salad" with my 3rd graders. Every time I read from the text, the
tudents placed a red piece of paper into the salad bowl. When I used my
background knowledge, they placed a green piece of paper into the bowl.
There were many Ah-hah moments with my students. They noticed that there was
much more thinking happening than there was text. (It sounds better when you
read the book.) She walks the reader through the lessons as she does them
with her students, so it's like observing someone present the lesson before
doing it with your class. It's a short, useful, and easy read.

Thanks for the all the info. Several teachers at my school are reading the
Comprehension Connections book and highly recommend it. I am in the process
of getting the book now. So excited to read it.

2011-09-27 Thread kim lum
The National Geographic monthly magazines are wonderful. There are at an
upper elem. reading level for sure and have all the conventions of
nonfiction!

Really Good Stuff has great sets of nonfiction but these books don't have
many of the conventions. They are high interest topics and my second graders
love them.

Of course any of the Rookie Read About books by Alan Fowler are great
knowledge fillers!

The reading is easy but the writing isn't very good--very short choppy

Brenda,
Sundance Publishers have two different sets called "The Real Deal". They are
my kids' FAVORITE nonfiction books. They range between 3rd-5th grade reading
levels and are about a variety of nonfiction topics, one including how
things smell. They are full of nonfiction features and have super
illustrations/photographs. Kids love them! My only wish is that they would
make ANOTHER set that I could purchase for my classroom!

National Geographic has monthly "magazines". There is one written for students
in 3-5 and another one that is similar but at a lower level. They have
wonderful articles with many non fiction text structures which lead to mini
lessons.
