[mou-net] St. Paul White-winged crossbills
Yesterday morning around 11:00am (January 24) I saw flock of white-winged crossbills noisily feeding in the neighbor's spruce trees. These are the first I have seen in my area (West Side-just across from downtown). [mou-net] Golden Eagle, Scott and Le Sueur counties
Around noon today I observed a 1st year Golden Eagle flying along the MN River bluffs near Ney Nature Center in the northwest tip of Le Sueur County. As the bird headed north it crossed Hwy. 19 into Scott County, then interacted with an approaching Bald Eagle. I have posted a couple photos of the duo on my blog (address below). The bird headed north out of sight around 12:10. This is the first Golden Eagle I have found in the MN River Valley during winter (they are very rare migrants spring and fall in the area). [mou-net] Dodge and Mower County Snowy Owls; Dodge county WW Crossbills
Jim Otto and I travelled to Dodge and Mower counties today in search of the recently reported Snowy Owls. The Dodge county Snowy Owl was found in the field to the west of 150 Ave., about halfway between 690 St. and 700 St. At first it was on the ground next to one of the large white posts, then perched on the post. There was a flock of over 100 White-winged Crossbills just north of here, in the spruces along the east side of 150 Ave. north of 690 St. It was very enjoyable viewing the crossbills feeding in these low spruces. The Mower county Snowy Owl was briefly observed perched on a utility pole on 640 Ave., south of 300 St. It then flew into the field to the west of 640 Ave. (5:00 pm). Thanks to everyone who posted locations and updates on these Snowy Owls, and to Bruce Lees for alerting us to the presence of the White-winged Crossbills. [mou-net] Dodge County - Snowy Owl - WW Crossbills
While looking and finding the Snowy Owl in Dodge County this morning I found White-winged Crossbills roughly a third of a mile north from the intersection of 150th Avenue and 690th Street. While travelling to the site, look for a small wind turbine which is located on the east side of 150th.I estimate there were 50 Crossbills moving back and forth between the grove north of the wind turbine and a farm site containing two houses located on the west side of 150th. I just finished Doug Keiser's post on the same subjects. His estimate is much higher. I am horrible in estimating numbers of birds - I will go along with Doug, there were a lot of Crossbills. I was glad to hear of his success on finding the Mower County Snowy Owl. I spent about 45 minutes at mid-day today without success.
