[mou-net] Belated report of White winged Crossbills in Brooklyn Center, Hennepin County

2009-01-27 Thread Alt, Mark
As I loaded my luggage into the car to go to the airport this week, six
White-winged Crossbills, emitting raucous longspuresque rattles, settled
down in my raggedy Pitch Pine that overhangs my driveway. They jumbled
about and then zipped off very energetically. Is it me or does their
flight pattern seem much more speedy and energetic than other finches we
see here in MN? Even Red Crossbills seem to flock more regularly and fly
more directly, White-winged Crossbills usually go for a swirling Busby
Berkley entrance and exit. New yard bird, and up till now my favorite
yard bird was Jeff Beck...( I suspect you must be aged 40-65 to
understand this non-sequitur). Oh, and by the way, there was a 84 degree
difference from Minneapolis to where I am this week - Mexico City...
Good Birding!

[mou-net] Snowy Owl, Dodge Co. still around

2009-01-27 Thread Ken or Rebecca Vail
For those of you still searching for the previously reported Snowy Owl in Dodge
Co. I spotted the owl atop a utility pole on CR 3 between 660th St and 670th St
(CR W) at 4:20 Monday. This is further north than any of the reported
sightings.

[mou-net] White-Winged Crossbills, Mower County

2009-01-27 Thread rvjesse
Good Afternoon:  Just had a nice flock of around 40 White-Winged Crossbills in
the 3 large evergreen trees we share with our neighbors here in our front yard
in Austin, Mower County.  Were here for a few minutes, eating and chattering
away.  Most then flew southwest around 200 feet to another neighbors evergreen
trees. Have left the area for now.   Thanks,  Bob Jessen  2204 9th Place SW,

[mou-net] Spr. Grouse, Eve. Grosbeaks, Boh. Waxwings (Ely area)

2009-01-27 Thread KCTEPO00
I had a fun late morning today in and around Ely. Pine Siskins, Pine Grosbeaks
and Common Redpolls were very active, vocal and numerous at many stops I made.
A few scattered crossbills seen as well. Previously reported Bohemian Waxwings
were seen in Ely from the Trezona Trail along the south end of Miners Lake; I
saw about 15-20 but I believe others have found as many as 60 on other days.
In the small town of Winton (3 miles east of Ely) there was a lot of activity
around one particular feeder (easily seen from the main north-south road
through town) including Redpolls, Pine Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, and even a
Spruce Grouse! Quite an easy and unexpected way to find see my first one.

Toward the end of my travels today I also saw a wolf cross the road in front of
my car, then stop to look at me for about 10 seconds and allowing me to snap a
photo before it moved along.

[mou-net] Anachronism in Movie

2009-01-27 Thread Julian Sellers
My wife and I recently rented "The Great Debaters," which is set in
northeastern Texas in 1935. One scene shows cattle in a pasture with two--you
guessed it--Cattle Egrets, a species which was first seen in North America in
1941 (in south Florida), not well established in the eastern U.S. or nesting in
Texas until the 1950s (source: Birds of North America online).

Other than that, it's a good movie.
