[mou-net] White-winged Crossbills, birding software.
I had several at my home in Vadnais Heights this morning, feeding on pine cones. I had seen them last week as well. I would like to have some ideas on listing software. I have a yard list and world list I would like to organize. Any ideas? - Original Message - From: MOU-NET automatic digest systemmailto:lists...@lists.umn.edu To: MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDUmailto:MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU Sent: Monday, March 02, 2009 12:04 AM Subject: MOU-NET Digest - 28 Feb 2009 to 1 Mar 2009 (#2009-42) There are 8 messages totalling 435 lines in this issue. [mou-net] Koochiching County
Spent some time in Koochiching near Northome working on one of my houses and decided to take my 10 year old daughter birding in the afternoon. This is her list She compiled for the day. 1 Red Tailed Hawk 1 Rough Legged Hawk 5 Pine Grosbeaks 100s of Redpolls ( 1 Hoary) 45 Snow Bunting 60 Ravines 11 Crows 2 Magpies 21 Goldfinch 8 Purple Finch 1 Tree Sparrow numerous Black capped Chickadee 17 Blue Jays 1 Red Crossbill 2 Pileated 3 Downy 2 Hairy 11 Red Breasted Nuthatch 3 White Breasted Nuthatch 1 Horned Lark 3 Rock Dove 3 Ruffed Grouse ( no Spruce) Talking to the Locals they said Evening Grosbeaks are few and they haven't seen many Cedar or Bohemian Waxwings. Also, Pine Siskins have been in low numbers.. As an addition Morrison County has more Dark Eyed Junco's showing up. There still are a lot of Redpolls and Horned Larks. The Barred and Great Horned Owls are calling in more locations and the Cardinals are more active along with the Woodpeckers knocking. Found more areas with striped trees with recent flecking but didn't view any Black Backed Woodpeckers. Eagles and Hawks are starting to show up in more abundance. [mou-net] Unbelievable - Another Itasca County Three-toed Woodpecker!
I was working in the Chippewa National Forest today and turned up another Three-toed Woodpecker separate from the 2 I reported on Friday. This bird was a male and has probably been in his little tamarack swamp for a while as most of the trees had been worked over. To get to the spot, take Hwy 38 out of Grand Rapids to Wildernessa Rd, which is 1.5 miles north of CR 19. Take Wildernessa Rd east .5 miles. From there, there is a forest road going south but is gated and serves as a hiking/skiing trail. Walk 1000' feet, 2nd tamarack bog on your right. This is my 3rd Three-toed Woodpecker in Itasca in 4 days, but oddly, only my 5th ever. Additionally, 4 of those birds were either along CR 19 or within 1.5 miles of CR 19 and the last was only 4.5 miles from CR 19. So, I guess if you're hoping for a Three-toed Woodpecker in Itasca County, start with CR 19. Shawn Conrad http://users.2z.net/itasca_chippewa_birding/ _ HotmailĀ® is up to 70% faster. [mou-net] No Partridge
While birding in Dakota County, today, we saw Snow Buntings, and Horned Larks. Our quest was the Gray Partridge, but sadly we were shut out. We watched the area of 180th St. and Joan Ave around 2:15 pm and from 5-6:15 pm. It was a chilly, but beautiful day, and we walked at Carpenter Park. While there, we saw a pair of immature Bald Eagles soaring overhead. There would be no challenge, if you saw every bird you went after. Birding with Linda Whyte.
