I got shots of both, I think the Lincoln's turned out good, if so I'll put that one up on my web pages and send the link out to you all.. Speaking of female purple finch: Yesterday on Wander Rd (West of MN1 MM308 in Lake County) I had this drab bird with a beautiful brief song. The lighting was such that I couldn't ID it. I have since seen her better. But I did some research and read that female Purple Finch will sing on territory announcing their availability. Since then I have noticed her up and down the road singing from prominent perches. I hope she finds a guy, and that you find a dream job. I've have manyopportunities to study them and I even finally saw the chesnut lesser coverts on one. [mou-net] Jackson Co. birds this week
Hey folks, I've enjoyed marvelous looks at Lincoln's, Clay-colored, Chipping, Harris', and Field Sparrows in and around my yard. When they come to the porch feeder I can view them from 3 feet :). In the field I've enjoyed singing Savannah and Vesper's Sparrows. Lot's of Yellow-rumped Warblers flitting through the trees. Perhaps a visit to Kilen Woods tomorrow will yield other transients and returning breeders from the neotropics. I located a new Bald Eagle nest for Jackson County and its probably in its first or second year, judging by the still-dirty tail edge of the male of the pair. Should be that bird's first or at most second season of breeding. [mou-net] Acces to view shorebirds at Lake Byllesby
In response to some inquiries, public access to view the mudflats at the west end of Lake Byllesby is via Dakota County property, located at the southeast intersection of CR 88 and Hi 56. From this intersection, go about 1/4 mi. east on CR 88 to the first gate on the right (south side of the road). Park in the very limited area near the gate or along CR 88 and walk south toward the lake. Most shorebirds currently are very close to the north shoreline, so be cautious not to scare them away as you approach the lake. Scopes are essential. [mou-net] Vesper Sparrow, Dakota Co
Yesterday, out of all the White-throated Sparrows, and the couple Field and Chipping Sparrows, I espied a lovely Vesper Sparrow bathing in our ground water. It even gave my son good looks at its pretty little red epaulet, white eye-ring, and white outer tail feathers as it flew. Lovely looks. [mou-net] Cattle Egret Waseca and Rice Counties
Wally Swanson found a Cattle Egret in Waseca County this am at the Center Point Energy plant where he works. The egret was in the grassy area beside a pond with a fountain at the plant site. It then flew across the road to a farm yard with cattle and sat on a small building in the cow yard, then flew back to the pond at the plant. The plant is in Waseca County and the farm is in Rice County. From Waterville at the intersection of highways 13 and 60, take 13 south 2.2 miles to the intersection of highway 13 and 440th street. Turn left or east onto 440. The Center Point Energy plant is on the right or south. The farm is on the left or north. The plant gates are closed. The pond and farmyard are easily visible from the road. Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Le Conte's Sparrow (Hennepin Co.)
9:15am: There was one Le Conte's Sparrow today in the grassy/dogwood area in the southern part of Westwood Hills Nature Center in St. Louis Park. 8 ladies from the Mlps Audobon Chapter, the naturalist and I enjoyed superb looks at this bird; he was perched about 10 feet away, with the sun behind us. He hid in the grass for a while, then was seen doing that classic sparrow run, then flew to another patch of dogwoods. To get to this spot on the trail, grab a map from the interpretive center. Take the marsh trail west (left) for a while, perhaps 1/2 mile, then you will come to an open area. Once you past a tamarack on your right, start looking on the left side of the boardwalk. Ironically, the marsh is on the right side of the trail. Besides that, other typical birds were seen. Good birding! Alyssa DeRubeis Golden Valley, Hennepin Co. [mou-net] Salt Lake region
Hi there, My partner and I are traveling to the Salt Lake region the third week in May. We've got several spots picked out, including Antelope Island, of course. [mou-net] Short-eared Owl and Loggerhead Shrike, Nicollet County
This afternoon at the WMA one mile north of the town of Nicollet on the east side of Hwy. 111 a Short-eared Owl spooked up from the prairie as I walked along the dirt trail toward the wetlands. The bird fluttered around for a minute and then landed on top of a rise, allowing me to obtain some of the best looks I've ever had at this species (through a scope). On the way back to St. Peter along Hwy. 99, I found a Loggerhead Shrike perched on the telephone wire on the south side of the road. The location is just west of the electric substation at mile marker #7. I was able to take a few photos of this bird and will post one later today on my blog. [mou-net] Audubon's warbler seen at Nine-Mile Creek, Bloomington
I was on a Bell Museum botany field trip this a.m. at Nine Mile Creek. I had binocs. A small flock of YRWA came thru above us. One of the males had a bright yellow throat. I was surprised and looked at him two more times before the group moved on. definite total yellow throat. otherwise a standard eastern form (myrtle). I have seen Audubons yellow-rumped in CO, but not in MN. There were 4-5 myrtle males and one female. No photo. no video. There were several of us bearing binocs in the group but when I told the nearest birder soon after, the bird had already moved across the canopy above the vernal pond basin, heading north with his conspecifics. PS. I recommend Bell Museum botany field trips led by Bob Bergad. He is very knowledgeable and an excellent teacher, extemporizing on the morphology and life history of any tree/shrub/forb encountered. I think I have been on four now. Bob Bergad was distinguishing the Pennsylvania sedge from Spenglers sedge at the time the flock of warblers entered the woods. PPS. Carol Carter of Three Rivers Park District also found a singing brown thrasher that might be early(?) I can only think of two N American bird spp named for JJ Audubon--- Audubons shearwater and Audubons warbler. There may be more. He named scores of species for other people. good birding Gordon Andersson St Paul Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
