[mou-net] Live From Freeborn County--long

2011-01-08 Thread Al Batt

A Tufted Titmouse made a single day appearance at my brother's feeders in
beautiful Hartland. One has been seen here and there around town. Most
often, near Hartland Evangelical Church. A neighbor of the church, Millie
Olson, just gave me a photo of the titmouse. Eurasian Collared-doves are also
near the church.
A Trumpeter Swan is floating on the slice of the Shell Rock River passing
through Glenville. It's keeping company with three Canada Geese. River
otters in the same area.
Rusty Blackbird at a feeder near the former city of Bath. Residents of Bath
read that most accidents occur within two miles of home, so they have all
moved somewhere safer, leaving a ghost town.
Millie and Dale Westland of Hayward reported a Snowy Owl along Highway 46
near Albert Lea Lake at a spot fondly referred to as “the dip in the road.”

I saw a Varied Thrush in rural Hartland. It is coming to a spot where
pheasants are being fed. If anyone is interested in seeing this bird, I can
give
you a phone number. The landowner is not interested in giving carte
blanche access to his property.
An injured Great Horned Owl is at the Raptor Center thanks to the kindness
of Clyde Bonnema, Lee and Jodi Loverink, and Larry and Sylvia Zevenbergen.
An injured Freeborn County Red-tailed Hawk did not survive a trip to the
Center.
There are a couple of male Red-winged Blackbirds at my feeders.
Joe Conley and I spotted a Wood Duck in small waterway near Pickerel Lake.
Each winter brings something that makes me go H. This year it is the
many photos I have received of Pileated Woodpeckers sent to me by people
in Albert Lea, Austin, Owatonna, Faribault, and Mankato. Either more people
are noticing or this lovely feathered friend is becoming more of a feeder
bird each year.
The Hormel Nature Center in Austin will be celebrating its 40th
Anniversary this year. There will be many events taking place throughout the
year and
the Hormel Nature Center is always a good stop for a traveler.
My thanks to Bob Holtz and the MOU for making it possible for me to present
binoculars to a fine young man at United South Central School.
In Waseca County, there is a small flock of Eurasian Collared-Doves near
the grain elevator on the north side of New Richland.
In Steele County, Eurasian Collared-Doves are seen as birds about town in
Ellendale.
There are so many Eurasian Collared-Doves around that I predict that one of
our local high schools will change its team's nickname to the fighting
Eurasian Collared-Doves.

[mou-net] Blackbirds in Rochester

2011-01-08 Thread Bill Tefft
A friend of mine sent the attached picture take on Jan 5 in downtown
Rochester, MN with this statement,

this was pretty wild! Thousands of blackbirds in the sky rooting in trees
downtown. I took the pic thru my.opened sunroof. Happy Friday

Maybe all of the recent blackbird discussion has made me suspicious, but I
checked CBC results from recent years and I don't see any indication from
counts that would suggest there should be these kinds of numbers at this
time of year.

But I know nothing about Rochester birds and would like to hear comments to
pass on to my friend.

Re: [mou-net] [mou-rba] Hoary Redpoll

2011-01-08 Thread David A. Cahlander
Lynn,

You posted attachments of Pine Grosbeak and Hoary Redpole to mou-rba.

This pointed out an error in the mou-rba configuration. Attachments are not
allowed on mail to either mou-net or mou-rba. The configuration of the list
has now been changed to exclude mail with attachments.

There is a place to input and share an image of a bird. Either Showcase or
Recently Seen on http://moumn.org.

Thanks.

  Good Morning-

On Sunday, January 2, we had a Hoary Redpoll visit our feeders among a flock
of 80-100 Common Redpolls.

A pair of Pine Grosbeaks were also present most of the day.

Our place is north of Cromwell, MN.

  Photos attached.

CROWS. And though they are in downtown Rochester, they are not there to

[mou-net] American kestrel

2011-01-08 Thread Liz Stanley
Today I drove down to visit Lock and Dam #4 in Alma, WI to check out the
eagles.

On the way home I found a kestrel perched along Hwy 50 a few miles east of
where it intersects Hwy 52, just outside of Hampton.

Here's a photo: http://www.pbase.com/gymell/image/131685130

By the way, there's good access to the water at Lock and Dam #4. There is
a small boat dock south of the dam which is open to the public. So it has
the potential to be a good spot for eagle photography. Just be sure to
dress warm! I got a few shots today, but the wind was coming from the
north so the eagles were facing away from the sun.

[mou-net] Fw: Hummingbird Story

Subject: Hummingbird Story

I was reminded of this hummingbird story this week so before I forget
again I will tell it. We were sitting in our truck outside of a
building when we spotted a hummingbird going passed. The bird stopped
and hovered in front of a small white, black and red sign by the door of
the building. It was hovering looking at the sign as if to read it
prompting us to read it. It said This is an idle free zone. The bird
sped off as we finished reading the sign. No time for a picture, it was
priceless birding moment. Cathy

[mou-net] Am. Three-toed Woodpecker in Sax-Zim

2011-01-08 Thread Kim R Eckert
Thanks to Doug Kieser's sharp hearing, the MBW group found a male Am
Three-toed Woodpecker this afternoon, 8 January, in the Sax-Zim Bog,
St Louis Co. It was along both sides of McDavitt Rd, 2.6 mi N of Sax
Rd. Also at dusk today we saw 2 Great Gray Owls on McDavitt Rd, at 3.8
mi and 4.2 mi N of Sax Rd, where there have been other recent
sightings. The previously reported N Hawk Owl was still present as
well along McDavitt, 1.8 mi N of Sax Rd.
