[mou-net] Horned Grebe and others at Purgatory Creek
Visited Purgatory Creek in Eden Prairie around 5:00 PM this afternoon and saw many waterfowl including one Horned Grebe, a lifer for me. It was quite a ways out, but could still be identified with a spotting scope. The closest location to the Grebe on the walking path was at the bench right by the parking lot between Lifetime Fitness and CVS Pharmacy. It was too far and a bit dark to get good pictures, but I took a few for documentation. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mnbirder/5604836164/in/photostream/ I believe it was a Horned Grebe because it had a very distinct yellow stripe across the top of the head. Looking through my pictures using contrast we saw some pictures showed a reddish looking neck implying it was a Horned Grebe instead of an Eared Grebe. Also present: 8 Ruddy Ducks 7 Canvasback Many Lesser Scaup 3 Common Loons 5+ Common Merganser Possibly 2 Redheads (saw them when we first got there, but didn't see them again) 3 Great Blue Herons 3 Ring-Billed Gulls 1 Pied-Billed Grebe About 10 Northern Shovelers Many Coots 2 Killdeer Ben Harste Bloomington, MN Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Brant, Cinnamon Teal
In Grant County, a BRANT was found this afternoon by a group of birders near the town of Herman along 120th Street about a quarter of a mile west of county road 7. It flew to the north about 5:45 and was not refound. They also found a CINNAMON TEAL on the west side of county road 11 about four miles north of Herman and about a hundred yards south of county road 8. Sorry I did not get the names of all the birders in the group, but I did manage to get the names of Bob Dunlap, Dave Bartkey, and Dedrick Benz. At 5:50 the Brant flew north with a large group of Greater White-fronted Geese and thus has presumably left from the area. Bob Dunlap Sent via DROID on Verizon Wireless Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] breeding siskin/Rice Co.
Hi All-- Yesterday evening I banded a Pine Siskin here in Northfield. The bird had a well-developed brood patch. (Siskins have been common this winter in Northfield.) Also yesterday our neighbor raked her forest leaves and uncovered her patch of Siberian Squill, with many budding and some flowering.
