[mou-net] Osprey Watch
I read with interest the posting about the Osprey Watch program at Wm and Mary College in Virginia. We have a local organization with a similar name “Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch” which is dedicated to monitoring all nests in the 8 county metro area surrounding Minneapolis and St Paul. We are a growing group of passionate people who are interested in learning more about this magnificent raptor, monitoring the population expansion, and studying their productivity and behaviors! We share the concerns of the worldwide project regarding contaminants, climate change and fish depletion and therefore we are monitoring ALL known nests for an accurate productivity study as well as behavioral studies. Ospreys are an indicator species that indicate much about the environmental health of our community and therefore we believe it is important to continue this local study which began in 1984. (Three Rivers Park District announced in January that they were reducing their research and banding to just 1/3 of the nests in the metro). We always need help monitoring all the nests and if you are interested please contact us. We also need the public’s help in reporting new nests to us. Contact us at osprey...@att.net. You can find us on Facebook now too! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Twin-Cities-Metro-Osprey-Watch/218968924786696?ref=ts Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

There were good mud flats and dozens of distant shorebirds. The wind and my need to git goin' led to cursory IDs for Greater Lssr YLs and Pectoral SPs. There where other sizes present Alos of noter were more than 600 Green-winged Teal covering the lake. Blue-winged Teal were quite numerous as well. A few Pintail Ducks, Northern Shovelers and Gadwall were clear minorities. [mou-net] Fw: [mou-net] How do Brown Pelicans feed in MN?
I don't know whether anyone else answered Julian's question. Yes, the pelican plunged into the water repeatedly to feed, most of the time coming up with a tasty snack. It would then swim around a while, flex its wings, then take off for another fishing expedition. After 30 minutes or so of feeding it flew to its favorite piling where it slept for a while. Also of interest at the same spot were two peregrine falcons, one perched on top of the tallest grain elevator, then two of them chasing each other and around with a scolding crow. - Forwarded Message - From: Julian Sellers juliansell...@msn.com To: MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU Sent: Sunday, April 8, 2012 9:42 PM Subject: [mou-net] How do Brown Pelicans feed in MN? [mou-net] RFI: Brown Pelican Activity
How often does the bird feed (and fly)? Has anyone noticed a pattern of resting and feeding? I would love to see this bird in both MN and WI and am curious if there is a best time when it might be seen actively flying and therefore potentially straying across the middle of the river. Any observation information with time would be appreciated. Re: [mou-net] Fw: [mou-net] RFI: Brown Pelican Activity
It's possible that many of the disappearances of Brown Pelicans after they turn up in Wisconsin and Minnesota are due to their fishing technique. When they're in the ocean, water depth is pretty reliable out from shore. Not so in many lakes. It would be a very rude awakening to hit a rocky bottom. [mou-net] Brown Pelican - Dakota County!
Brown Pelican seen flying North near Coates, MN. West side of Hwy 52 at Dakota CR 46 at about 10:30am. I assume this is the Red Wing bird. Lost sight of the bird North of CR 46. Marj and I were going down to Red Wing to try to see the Brown Pelican. Marj pointed out a farmer in the field just to the West of Hwy 52. When I looked at the farmer, I also saw a large bird flying North. It looked like a Brown Pelican. We turned around and refound the bird in flight still going North. Marj pulled onto CR 46 and I jumped out with my camera. The bird flew right over the car and continued going North. I got one (poor) picture of the bird as it went away. We tried to follow, but we lost the bird. Who knows where it will be next. --- David Cahlander da...@cahlander.com Burnsville, MN 952-894-5910 Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Brown Pelican
Just a side note on the Brown Pelican. Mark Jungens came down to pick me up to go to Red Wing to look for the Pelican. Because of traffic we left my house at 9:20 rather than 9:00. Being late in this case was good fortune, it put us at Dakota County 46 and Highway 52 at the same time as the Brown Pelican. Don Mattsson also was there at that time as well. [mou-net] Brown Pelican Update
A Brown Pelican was seen by Julian Sellers about 2:30 this afternoon in Chisago County. He was driving north on I-35 about a mile south of the Stacy exit when he saw the bird flying to the northwest. This is just north of the Carlos Avery Refuge. Lakes in the general direction where the bird was headed include Martin, Fawn, Ryan, Mud, Typo, Hoffman, Tamarack, and Long lakes. [mou-net] Smith's Longspur Search, Brown Co.
The Smith's Longspurs that were present at the grasslands NE of Comfrey a year ago have reappeared again this spring. Last Saturday there was a flock of 6 in almost the same exact location. Next Saturday, April 14th, I will be taking some birders to that location to look for more migrating Smith's Longspurs. I'm sure we can accomodate more if there are other birders that would like to join in the search. If you're interested, please e-mail me backchannel and we can discuss the details. The general plan is to meet in Sleepy Eye at 10:30 a.m. and then drive to Longspur spot. [mou-net] NE sandhill cranes at Rowe Sanctuary
I travel out to Rowe Sanctuary in Nebraska each year to spend a night or two in the photo blinds, along the Platte river with the sandhill cranes. It's a great experience to be right there as they come in for the night, and watching them take off the next morning. I highly recommend it! It's only a day's drive away. The weather was very warm and sunny, which made for some great sunset photo opportunities. I thought I'd share some of the photos here. http://www.pbase.com/gymell/rowe_2012 Closer to home, my bluebird pair has built their nest in the backyard. I'm pretty sure it's the same pair from last year, since they know to come in for mealworms when I whistle. Along with chickadees, woodpeckers and cardinals who have also learned that trick. They all have me well trained. I had a chipping sparrow show up in the yard last week. Yesterday an eastern phoebe was scolding me over at Richardson Nature Center, during my volunteer shift there. [mou-net] Oodles of Ospreys
Today was a very, very good day for osprey watching. I visited three nesting platforms, including two near my office over lunch and another on my way home. And, all three platforms had an osprey pair onboard or nearby. The sunny weather provided some great photo opps. I sat in my car at a distance at all three locations and took photos through my car window and sunroof. The ospreys at one location put on quite an aerial show. At one point, they both soared right over my car to have a look. I was hoping to see them hunt. But, no luck. A few of the better photos are posted on my Flickr stream.http://www.flickr.com/photos/rburmaster/sets/72157629781085189/show/ I've reported these sightings on ebird including the locations. All three platforms are out in the open and easily visible. And, two of the three are in fairly heavily trafficked areas. I've also reported these through Osprey Watch and Twin Cities Metro Osprey Watch.
