2012-07-24 Thread Linda Krueger
Hi Everyone!

First of all, thank you so much to those of you who previously voted for
our photos in the National Wildlife Photo contest. Because of your votes,
one of our photos made it into the People's Choice Award Final Round
Thank YOU!

Starting today, July 24th thru August 6th, the voting begins for the
finalist to receive the People's Choice Award. If you like our photo,
could we ask you to please vote for us again. You can vote every single
day thru August 6th. The site address is www.nwf.org/photocontest. That
will take you right to the photos that made it into this final round. Our
photo is on page 6 (if you leave the default set to Show 12 photos) and
it's the photo of the Bald Eagle with its wings outstretched and a fish in
its talons. For those who have voted for us before, you can use your same
email address and password to vote. For those who didn't vote previously,
if you'd like to this time, it's easy and fast to register.

After the People's Choice Award is announced, then all the photos go to a
jury for First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention prizes. Wish us luck
with that part of the contest!

Again, thank you for considering doing this for us and thank you to all of
you have been supporting us all along.

Oh by the way, we honestly don't know which one of us took that photo as
both of us were shooting Eagles in the same location that day! So, this is
a friendly competition between us

[mou-net] Cardinals - St. Louis County

2012-07-24 Thread Tanya Beyer
Again with this qualifier that it may be old news to the locals, but these
were my first cardinals, singing or not, in Duluth since 2010. The song
attracted me over to the thicket, behind the row of crab apple trees, as I
was jogging along Park Point between the playground and the last few
houses. Another cardinal responded to the first one over nearer the beach.
And these are birds that will come check you, the human prowler, out when
you go peeking at them (unlike a Connecticut warbler...)

[mou-net] MRVAC - Whitewater State Park - Field Trip Report - July 18 - 21, 2012

2012-07-24 Thread CRAIG MANDEL
July 18 - 21, 2012

Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter
Whitewater State Park
Field Trip Report

Enjoyed a nice trip to Whitewater state park and the surrounding counties. We
observed a little over 90 species of birds for the trip. We observed close to
50 of those species in Whitewater state park. Here are some of the species
observed during the trip.

Common Gallinule - Wabasha County - Two birds were heard, at the Richard Dorer
Pools. Access to the location is along Highway 74, about 2 miles SW of Highway
61. The trailhead is marked Richard Dorer Pools and has a blue numbered sign
as well (14947). The birds were heard about 50 yard South of the trailhead.

Eurasian Collared-Dove - Winona County - Several Eurasian Collared-Doves were
relocated in the town of Lewiston, near the grain elevator.

Acadian Flycatcher - Winona County - A single bird was heard briefly at
Whitewater state park, on the Trout Run Creek trail. The bird was heard
several times by marker number 8, near the end of the trail.

Alder Flycatcher - Winona County - A singing Alder Flycatcher, was heard and
observed along Highway 74, 2/10ths of a mile South of the Whitewater WMA, DNR
headquarters, facility.

Willow Flycatcher - Winona Wabasha Counties - Willow Flycatchers were heard
at a number of locations along Highway 74, in both Winona and Wabasha counties.

Bell's Vireo - Wabasha County - The Bell's Vireo's previously reported from the
Mc Carthy Lake WMA, were still present and singing, in the woods just West of
the main entrance to the WMA, along CR 84.

Louisiana Waterthrush - Winona County - Three Louisiana Waterthrush's were
heard and one was observed along the Trout Run Creek trail at Whitewater state
park. The birds were heard and seen along the trail between trail markers
number 3 and 6.

Lark Sparrow - Wabasha County - Several Lark Sparrows were heard and observed
at the Headquarters for the Nature Conservancy, Weaver Dunes SNA, which is
located along Highway 84.

Grasshopper Sparrow - Wabasha County - Heard and observed at several locations
at Mc Carthy Lake WMA and Weaver Dunes SNA.

Henslow's Sparrow - Wabasha County - Five Henslow's Sparrows were heard and two
those were observed at Weaver Dunes SNA. To reach Weaver Dunes SNA, take
Highway 84 South from the town of Kellogg to 605th Street (TWP 141), go East on
605th street for about a block and turn left on the small dirt road at the end
of 605th street. Follow this to a parking area, about 1/4 mile East of the end
of 605th street. The birds were heard and seen from this parking area.

Dickcissel - Wabasha Winona Counties - In Wabasha county the birds were
observed at 3 of the open areas along Highway 84, South of Kellogg. In Winona
county, birds were observed at the intersection of CR 1 and CR 12 and near the
intersection of CR 1 and Burns Valley Road.

Orchard Oriole - Winona County - A male Orchard Oriole was heard and then
observed by the main visitor center and camper check in station at Whitewater
State park.

[mou-net] Minnesota Lake shorebirds, Faribault County

2012-07-24 Thread Bob Dunlap
John Hockema just called to report that he and Andy Nyhus are looking at
about 2,000 shorebirds on the mudflats of Minnesota Lake in northern
Faribault County. He mentioned at least nine species present (but probably
more) highlighted by four American Avocets. They were viewing the lake from
the park in town on the northeast side of the lake.
