[mou-net] Mississippi Kite
Just saw a adult Mississippi Kite fly over my house. The kite was first noticed to the east of my house circling over head possibly hunting dragonflies and then it flew directly over our house and then circled again and then headed towards Morgan Park or to the neighborhood west of our house. I live in Duluth in the Smithville neighborhood, which is located on the west side of Duluth below Spirit Mountain. Re: [mou-net] Mississippi Kite
Cool! Is there any speculation where these annual Duluth kites come from? [mou-net] Orioles and Hummingbirds
While 8-10 Baltimore Oriole, including two adult males, continue to go through 2+ pounds of grape jelly daily at my feeders I was particularly pleased to see a 1st year female Orchard Oriole with them this afternoon. Also hosting an unusually large number of Ruby- throated Hummngbirds. I have never before felt compelled to make three quarts of nectar at a time and even that is only a two and a half day supply. Perch Lake east of Beauford has 200 plus Great White Egrets and Great Blue Herons although little if any water. [mou-net] Golden-winged Warbler, Goodhue Cty; C. Nighthawk flock, Dakota Cty
Today, in late afternoon, I found a Golden-winged Warbler on the Goodhue side of Miesville Ravine, along the trail parallel to the Cannon River trail. The weather was very hot and muggy, with fierce mosquitoes in spite of spray; plus, the birding was slow, so this warbler was a very pleasant surprise! As I was leaving the ravine, I also saw a flock of at least 20-30 migrating Common Nighthawks. They were feeding on thousands of flying insects on the north side of 280th St. This is a prairie area of the Dakota Cty Parks, and on the south side of 280th is Goodhue Cty, with large fields of soybeans. Occasionally a nighthawk would venture to the other side of the road, but always immediately returned to the prairie in Dakota Cty. I haven't seen nighthawks for a long time, so this was a neat sighting for me. [mou-net] Common Gallinules Dakota County 180th Marsh, September 3rd, 2012
This morning shortly before noon we observed 3 immature Common Gallinules at 180th St. Marsh in Dakota County. One bird was very difficult to see in the most western pond on the North side of the road as it fed in and out of the Cattails (thanks to some friends for pointing this bird out). The other two immature Common Gallinules were also on the North side of the road but in the far corner of the eastern most pond. We also heard a cacophony of Soras from both sides of the road. An immature Red-headed Woodpecker was also found just south of Hwy 42 on Emery Ave. Our group also checked on shore birds with no results at Jirik Sod farms, and the flooded field at Alta Ave./302 Rd in Dakota County. We also went to the previously reported flooded field on Hwy 56 just South of the Stanton Air field in Goodhue County, which still has good habitat, but no shorebirds. Of note were the two Eastern Tiger Salamanders we found (alive) crossing the road in two different places in Dakota County. with Alex Cruz Jr. (lookin up), Matthew Bribitzer-Stull, and Bill Simon Scott B. [mou-net] Swift County - Common Gallinule
I found a winter plumaged Common Gallinule and two young this afternoon at the Lubenow WPA in NW Swift County. This is the same location where the Purple Sandpiper was found last November. The adult and one of the young were hanging out near or in the reeds at the north end of the pond on the east side of the road. They were quite close to the road and I was able to watch them for a long time. The other young bird was out in open water on the north end of the west pond further out from the road. Also, I was able to re-find the Buff-breasted Sandpipers in both Chippewa and Swift counties that Herb Dingmann reported on Saturday at Shakopee Lake. There were also a couple of American Golden Plovers at the north end of the lake in Swift County. There were good quantities of lots of other shorebird species as well. A Red-breasted Nuthatch was also hanging around in the deciduous woods near the entrance to the Chippewa Co park on Shakopee. I tried to spot the gallinules at the Morris District auto loop in Stevens County but was not able to find them tonight. There was one Am Golden Plover at the east end of the next/last pond after the pond where Herb found the gallinules. [mou-net] Shorebirds activity this afternoon @ Park Point
This afternoon my visiting brother and I walked a portion of the end of Park Point. After a little swimming in Lake Superior, we walked back to the parking-lot, and had a small group of shorebirds (1 Semipalmated Sandpiper, 2 Baird's Sandpipers and 1 Ruddy Turnstone). A little closer to the parking-lot area of the beach, a lone Semipalmated Plover was seen. I took some pictures, and will post some pictures likely tomorrow. Just wanted to share my sightings, in case anyone was interested in doing some shorebirding in Duluth tomorrow. During my brother's visit, he adopted a Merlin at Hawk Ridge. That was the first bird he ever held, and was really excited about it! My eBird list from this afternoon at Park Point. Pictures to come a little later! http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11512643 Good birding, Erik Bruhnke Duluth, MN -- *NATURALLY AVIAN* - Birding Tours and Bird photography birdf...@gmail.com www.pbase.com/birdfedr www.facebook.com/NaturallyAvian Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
