[mou-net] NO Carolina wren, just bluebirds Hennepin County
My report of a Carolina wren last week prompted a suggestion to tempt it with mealworms. We put out dried mealworms, but haven't seen the wren again. However, at least 5 bluebirds found them and have been enjoying the worms ever since! In addition, a red-breasted nuthatch has appeared to join numerous white-throated and fox sparrows and a few purple finch. Goldfinch numbers seem to have increased; there are 30-40 fluttering around the feeders all day. [mou-net] CLARK'S NUTCRACKER today in Duluth
While count interpreting migrating songbirds and raptors today at Hawk Ridge, I spotted a CLARK'S NUTCRACKER flying by. The bird was flying quite low over the tree tops, and was last seen heading northeast. It was really exciting to see! There was a non-stop stream of Red-tailed Hawks throughout much of today at Hawk Ridge. Earlier this morning, I saw a flock of 10 Pine Grosbeaks fly overhead. I'm off to the Twin Cities now, to join up for some birds and beers, and to attend the Focus on Diversity: Changing the face of American Birding conference that takes place tomorrow. [mou-net] Sherburne Refuge - The Big Sit
Hi All, The Sherburne Savanna Sitters will be conducting The Big Sit! bird count at Sherburne Refuge headquarters on Sunday, October 14 from 6:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. Stop by to chat - see how our count is going. Lots of eyes and ears needed and appreciated! In 2010 (we skipped last year) we had 43 species, but the count was conducted from the beginning of the wildlife drive, so we'll see if changing locations makes any difference. [mou-net] Clark's Nutcracker- Hawk Ridge, Duluth
At 2:15 pm this afternoon, a Clark's Nutcracker was spotted flying over the Hawk Ridge main overlook heading northward, when it was seen by numerous observers. I posted a photo of this bird to MOU recently seen. There were were no additional sightings of this bird today, although Peder Svingen and Mike Hendrickson searched the area of Tischer and Maxwell Avenues without success. Although there are approximately 19 total records of this accidental species for Minnesota, it has only been seen twice previously in Minnesota since 1977: 14-24 October 2004 in Lake County and 13 September 1986 in Mower County. All Minnesota records are in the fall and early winter from 8 September to 24 December.
