[mou-net] Merlin nesting, West St. Paul, Dakota County
There has been a pair of merlins nesting this year at corner of Butler and Smith Ave. in West St. Paul. According to the homeowner at the location they have fledged 3 chicks recently and there has been a nesting at this location for 4-5 years. This is news to me, although it being about half a mile from my house I suspect this is the same merlin pair I have seen the past two springs in my part of the neighborhood. The adult birds may be easily viewed perched in a partially dead ash tree near the SE corner of the intersection. [mou-net] Common Gallinules, Nicollet County
This morning I played a Common Gallinule recording at the public access off CR 4 on the north side of Swan Lake. Immediately, a gallinule responded from the nearby cattails. It called several more times over the next 20 minutes. At one point, another bird called further out in the marsh. I got only one very brief look at the bird on the right side of the narrow channel that goes out through the marsh from the access during the 30 minutes I was there. At least 3 Virginia Rails were also present. Earlier, I came across a Grey Partridge crossing CR 4 .1 mile south of CR 15. [mou-net] Wilkin County LeConte's and Nelson's Sparrows
I had a calling LeConte's and a calling Nelson's Sparrow shortly after noon today. They were along 230th Avenue between 1/4 and 1/2 a mile north of 210th Street. The Nelson's Sparrow was closest to 230th Avenue. [mou-net] Chimney Swifts
Friday nights count was only 6 birds that entered a chimney that last year had many. The number is like just one family group. Hope others observed more. Tom Bell Grey Cloud Island 5868 Pioneer Rd. [mou-net] Whitewater SP Yellow-throated Warbler Young?
This morning I met Josh and Evan Wallestad at Whitewater State Park. After missing the yellow-throated warbler at 7 and only being able to hear a Louisiana Waterthrush on Trout Run Creek we returned to the Nature Store Picnic area around 8:30 to search for the yellow-throated warbler again. We successfully found a singing adult, but noticed three other (unidentified) warblers that were exhibiting juvenile behavior by begging for food. After all birds flew over the road and out of sight we returned to our cars to consult a field guide for juvenile birds of this species, but found that we had both left them at home. At the same time Herb Dingmann pulled in and after a short time we found one adult and two others. The others continued to beg for food and fluffed up similar other species. [mou-net] Swift-sit time
Just a heads-up: the time mentioned on the Audubon MN page was 7:46 PM. However, sunset here yesterday was 8:47, as listed in the newspaper. It makes a difference, when you're concentrating effort on the periods just before and after sunset---and so do those sporadic rain showers that greeted some folks.
