Re: [mou-net] Mystery Gull today - Cottonwood County (Long Lake)
Sorry about the repeated message; but one of my photos seems to show the bill is banded, not bicolored. Also found a photo of ring-billed gull that showed somewhat similar bleaching. I am submitting a RQD as a Cottonwood County California Gull. I am leaving it public so anyone who may chase the bird can view the photos and draw their own conclusions before they commit. I have little idea if the bird is still present. There were ~5 gulls on the lake when I revisited at dusk, but they were well beyond binocular range. It is an adult or near-adult white headed gull with a dark eye, red orbital ring, greenish legs and a bi-colored bill. If not for the bill, the photos of the perched bird would resemble a California Gull - although that was certainly not my impression in the field (probably because I first saw the bird in flight). The bird in flight has strikingly patterned wings - almost certainly as a result of feather wear. The bird landed on the road carrying a small catfish and was flushed as the next vehicle came by. I have some photos of varying quality that should be sufficient for ID. The better photos are of the bird perched. If a few gull aficionados want to give me their opinions I can send a couple photos - let me know. [mou-net] Lark Sparrows/Scott County
Hi All— Last Thursday, Gerry Hoekstra and I photographed several Lark Sparrows at the Louisville Swamp Unit of the MN Valley NWR in northern Scott County. The birds were feeding in a burned prairie area, the type of habitat the species often prefers. My photos are on my blog this morning (I believe Gerry posted his on the MOU website). http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com Sorry for my late posting—it is hard to keep up in the blog with the rush of spring birds. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Hooded Warbler at Murphy Hanrehan
On 5/17, a Hooded Warbler was singing on the south side of the trail between trail markers 14 and 15 in Murphy Hanrehan Regional Park, Scott County. This location is about 1/2 mile east-northeast of the northeastern most part of Murphy Lake. The warbler sang five times @ 12:30 p.m., so may be on territory. If you go look for it, please stay on the trail and do not use tapes. This is not a part of the park that is off limits. Had 20 species of warblers in the park, including a Cape May and Golden-winged (but no Blue-winged or Cerulean in places where they usually occur). Also a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird building a nest. On 5/18 a.m., Golden-winged Warbler in the oaks along West River Road in South Minneapolis, just south of the ravine by the intersection with 34th Street. -- Dave Zumeta, Executive Director Minnesota Forest Resources Council dzum...@umn.edu (651) 603-0108 Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] American Bitterns-Steele County
Yesterday our merry band of 6 birders found an unprecedented number of 5 American Bitterns in Steele County while doing our annual Big Day county count. 3 were seen and the other 2 were heard. 2 at Rice Lake State Park - one heard from the boat landing and the other seen at the first marsh on the road going into the primitive camping area. 2 seen at the Straight River Marsh on County Road 45 south of Owatonna. 1 heard at the wetlands in Ellendale, MN, about 4 blocks north off of Main Street. [mou-net] Wabasha County White-faced Ibis, Hudsonian Godwits, Goodhue County Tufted Titmouse May 17th 2014
Spent the day birding southern Goodhue County and Northern Wabasha County yesterday. Highlights included a White-faced Ibis NE of the corner of Wabasha County 30 and N County Rd 24 near where one had been previously reported. The Ibis was with a large flock of Ring-billed and Franklin's Gulls. Just to the east on 160th Avenue, just South of N County Rd 24 the flooded field contained 5 Hudsonian and 4 Marbled Godwits, Least and Pectoral Sandpipers, Short-billed Dowitchers, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Plover, Wilson Phalaropes, and Common Nighthawks flying around the area. Also birded Hok-Si-La Municipal Park North of Lake City in Goodhue County and found only 16 warbler species. Ended the day with 3 Tufted Titmice at the corner of Wood Ave and Green Street near the cemetery at Villa Maria by Frontenac. Scott B. [mou-net] White-faced Ibis - Carver county
While scanning the flooded field adjacent to our property just now, a gorgeous White-faced Ibis flew in among the Caspian Terns. It stayed about 15 minutes before a Bald Eagle flew in and scattered the group. The Ibis flew off to the northwest in the direction of Lake Waconia and has not returned. Regards... Re: [mou-net] Wabasha snowy egert
Sorry for the short note earlier. Not much of a phone typer. It was a White-faced Ibis that we saw with the Snowy Egret...not a White Ibis. Also of interest along that stretch of flooded area we found Hudsonian Godwits, Short-billed Dowitchers and a Black-bellied Plover, Dunlin. We did see a distant group of dark Ibis fly over flooded area and behind trees. We were unable to relocate those birds. Earlier we had been to Hok-si-la near Lake City and seen 20 species of warblers. We ended up at McCarthy Lake with Grasshopper and Lark Sparrow. Pretty good day we thought. -jerry pruett On Sun, May 18, 2014 at 1:32 PM, jerry pruett pricant...@gmail.com wrote: At intersection of 30 an 24 north of kellog.
