[mou-net] change of personnel, Roberts, Minneapolis

2014-05-20 Thread Stephen Greenfield
The bird population seemed to have changed dramatically after Monday's
rains. At Roberts sanctuary in Minneapolis in particular, the Palm and
Orange-crowned and most of the Yellow-rumped Warblers that had been hanging
around were gone, along with the big numbers of Northern Waterthrush.
Species that had been scarce or not present were more apparent: e.g. many
Chestnut-sided and more Canada than I've seen (also at the Old Cedar Ave.
Bridge and Veterans), Red-eyed Vireos and the first wood pewee, and several
Mourning Warblers. Philadelphia Vireo and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher were
also present, and the regular Tuesday group led by Julie Brophy and Chris
also found a Connecticut Warbler on the west side near the stream. Still a
surprisingly small number of Tennessee Warblers around town, and of Warbling
Vireos.

It will be interesting to hear what happened elsewhere, and see what
develops for the rest of migration.

[mou-net] Ruddy Turnstones, Brown County

2014-05-20 Thread Brian & Risa Smith
This evening there were 18 Ruddy Turnstones at the Sleepy Eye Waste Treatment
Ponds. Ten flew away but there were still 8 present when I left. There was
also a flock of around 30 Red-necked Phalaropes. All of these birds were on or
along the far eastern lagoon and the berm that divides the three ponds. There
was a huge hatch of some sort of flying insect and this is what most of the
birds seemed to be feasting on, mostly in the grass.

On a different subject, Mike Oetken, John Schladweiler, Alex Watson and myself
did a Brown County Big Day last Sunday (18th). We were able to set a new Brown
County record of 144 species. While we didn't turn up anything particularly
unusual, we did have 18 species of shorebirds, 17 species of warbler and 10
species of sparrow for the day. A few highlights included 2 American Avocets
and 2 American Black Ducks at the Sleepy Eye WTP's. A flooded field along
County Rd. 10 east of Hwy. 4 had good numbers of shorebirds including Hudsonian
and Marbled Godwit. We also found a Peregrine Falcon in flight at this same
location. A notable miss for the day was Red-tailed Hawk! We kept expecting
to see one somewhere and somehow they avoided us.

[mou-net] Isolated Warblers - Park Point, Duluth

2014-05-20 Thread Tanya Beyer
Two days ago a person could see open water on the Duluth side, behind a
sort of residual mountain range of old snowpack mixed with sand along part
of the water's edge. Last night's storms must have moved a lot of ice
rubble since today the whole fogged-in Minnesota side was afloat with it,
as far as the eye could see. The feeling was Arctic. Any red-throated loons
would have been way off shore. But along the dunes there came an immature
yellowthroat, wren-like and busy in shrubs, and a brilliant spring-adult
Wilson's. Also every where I drove or walked there were Swainson's
thrushes, blown in on the storms that must have also hit Duluth last night.

Sunday night there were three adult and one immature Bonaparte's gulls
along the lake's edge there.

[mou-net] Beaver Creek Valley State Park, Houston Cty., 5/20

2014-05-20 Thread Jeanne Tanamachi
Warblers were abundant at Beaver Creek Valley this afternoon with the most
numerous being Am. Redstarts (everywhere you looked), Yellow Warblers and
Magnolias. 10 species in all but few Yellow-Rumps and no Palms. One lone
Blue-Winged sang in the brush at the north end of the main parking lot. There
were a number of Veeries (Veerys?) along the main creek trail and a Wood Thrush
singing right across from the colorful Beaver Creek Valley State Park sign as
you descend into the valley.

Re: [mou-net] Crow just Took a Cardinal

2014-05-20 Thread Justin Watts
Wow, I have never seen a crow take a bird that large. But in California I
have seen a dozen ravens stand over a chimney as Vauxs Swifts came in to
roost, and each raven would take a turn flying over the entrance and grab
one of the swifts as they began to enter the chimney. This was a large
colony of nearly 15,000 and about 10 swifts would enter each second. The
swifts were so habitual and had so little suitable roosts available that
they were never deterred, even though the clever Ravens made easy pickings
from them each night.

[mou-net] Carpenter Nature Center Mourning Warbler (Washington County)

2014-05-20 Thread Jbaines317
This morning I guided our three new interns on a bird hike through the
heart of CNC's Minnesota Campus. We had 67 species without birding near the
feeders. A few highlights were the Mourning Warbler foraging in the conifer
stand between the wetland and the Apple Shack. We also had fly-overs of three
different flocks of Caspian Terns. On the edge of the grass portion of the
North Loop Trail we had both a Blue-winged Warbler and a Golden-winged
Warbler. The river is still high so there is significant flooding in the
bottoms, but we were still able to see and hear a few Northern Parulas. A
Barred
Owl was also hunting in the bottoms.

A great morning to be out!

[mou-net] Piping Plover in Duluth

2014-05-20 Thread Kim R Eckert
Local residents reported today seeing a Piping Plover a couple of days ago on
the beach at about the 3300 block of Park Point, and late this morning it was
still present. It was found after about a 10-minute walk south from the 31st
Street/Lafayette Square access, and it had a yellow band with black lettering
on its left leg: N86.

As noted on the May 16 Duluth RBA, the birding has been interesting at Park
Point, with some of the species mentioned (Red-throated Loon, N Mockingbird,
Eastern Towhee) plus a few others (Western Grebe, Willet, Snowy Owl) reported
yesterday or today by various observers (and note that I did not discover any
of them). About the only thing negative to report is the relative lack of
warblers: e.g., despite ideal fallout conditions in the fog this morning after
yesterday's rain, I'm aware of only 14 warbler species (with just a few
individuals of each) being seen at Park Point. Hopefully, birders there this
afternoon might have some additional sightings of note.

There has been trouble with the lists umn edu subscription option and 344
members were deleted from the mailing list.

While we track down why these users were deleted, they have all
been added back to the list.

You don't have to do anything at this point in time, since it is assumed
that this is a system wide problem that needs to be solved by the ECC
administrators.

Thanks for your patience.

[mou-net] mou-net problems

2014-05-20 Thread David Cahlander

The umn.edu help desk has supplied information about the problem.

   A subscriber/list member from *@besteffort.com
    address (or other private
domain) posts a message to your list. It goes to all subscribers.
 No problem
   for anyone.

   A subscriber/list member from *@yahoo.com posts
a message (or a reply to the
above message) to your list. This will go to some subscribers, but
   will NOT
go to subscribers/list members at yahoo.com or
   hotmail.com/live.com/msn.com/
   outlook.com , Comcast.net, Gmail.com and
   several other domains. Messages to
these domains will not only not be delivered but will be
   bounced/refused as if
the recipients at those domains do not exist. Thus, after a few such
messages, your subscribers/list members at all of those problematic
   domains
are at risk to be auto-deleted from your list(s). This may amount
   to more
than half of your total subscribers.

What can you do about this? Immediate solutions:

For now, you must prevent subscribers/list members from *@yahoo.com
    addresses
from posting any messages to your list. They simply cannot
   participate in
your list if they send from a *@yahoo.com
address. They can receive and read
messages from other subscribers/list members and they can send from
   another
   address, if they have one.

Unless someone comes up with another idea, mou-net will exclude from
posting any messages from yahoo.com. yahoo.com members will be able to
receive messages, but they will not be able to post messages.

I too was given the same information, and have msn. I can feel pretty safe in

I've missed any e-mails, as I still receive a boat load each day. I wonder if
the problem is really in the
mou-net having a bug of some sorts, and when you re-enter your information, you
are filling the need

getting all your e-mails.
Just my thoughts.

[mou-net] Query - named searches

2014-05-20 Thread David Cahlander
A new experimental feature has been added to the query function on
mou-net. If you are making a search, that you expect to do again, you
can save this search as a "named search". There is a drop-down box in
the upper right-hand corner of the query page. The query page is
accessed from http://moumn.org and click on

Review Reported Birds -> Query Sightings Database

Instructions:

Named Searches. A search can be named and saved. Click New and type in
the name of a search, i.e. "County Birds in Metro Area", and click Save.
This search will stay in effect until you change it. X deletes the
search. You can go back to one of these searches at a later time. The
blank search can also be saved and/or deleted. When it is deleted a
default search is set as the new blank search.

Report any problems that you see to me.

Thanks.

I also received this message, I thought perhaps I had inadvertently marked MOU

It might be a server issue at MOU.

Subject: [mou-net] help with being dropped from MOU-NET

Hello,
I hope someone can help me out.  I received the message below this morning
regarding being dropped from MOU-NET.  I use hotmail and am receiving other
mail at that address.  It seems since some of the members on the list use
yahoo, their email bounces when I send a message to the list.  Then the
listserve automatically dumps me because me messages have bounced to them.
Can someone help?
Thanks, Molly Thompson

The partial message I received is below:
You have been automatically removed from the MOU-NET list (Minnesota
Birds) as a result of repeated delivery error reports from your mail
system. This decision was based on the list's automatic error monitoring
policy, and has not been reviewed or otherwise confirmed by a person. If
you receive this message, then it means that something is wrong. While
you are obviously able to receive mail, your mail system has been
regularly reporting that your account did not exist, or that you were
otherwise permanently unable to receive mail. Here is some information
that may assist you or your local help desk in determining the cause of
the problem:

- The failing address is thomp...@hotmail.com.

- The first error was reported on 2014-05-01.

- Since then, a total of 43 delivery errors have been received.

- The last reported error was: 5.1.1 550 5.7.0 (COL0-MC2-F12)
Unfortunately, messages from (134.84.119.32) on behalf of (YAHOO.COM)
could not be delivered due to domain owner policy restrictions.

PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THIS MESSAGE. While you can re-subscribe to the
list, it is important for you to report this problem to your mail
administrator so that it can be solved. This problem is not specific to
the MOU-NET list, and may also affect your private mail. This means that
YOU MAY HAVE LOST SOME PRIVATE MAIL AS WELL. Anyone trying to write to
you during the same time frame might have received the same errors for
the same reason. The MOU-NET list is only one of the many people who may
have tried to write to you while your mail system was malfunctioning.

[mou-net] mou net problems

2014-05-20 Thread David Cahlander

There has been trouble with the lists umn edu subscription option and 344
members were deleted from the mailing list.

While we track down why these users were deleted, they have all
been added back to the list.

You don't have to do anything at this point in time, since it is assumed
that this is a system wide problem that needs to be solved by the ECC
administrators.

Thanks for your patience.

Re: [mou-net] Crow just Took a Cardinal

2014-05-20 Thread Uwe Kausch
They are pretty opportunistic and will take just about whatever they can get,
so it does not surprise me if it caught another bird off guard. This Spring, I
have a crow who is regularly patrolling the shallow areas of my ponds, hunting
frogs. I have seen it twice grab a frog and carry it off to its nest. I have
observed it hovering above the pond and even go into the water, up to its
belly, while it is hunting. As a kid, I had a pet crow...I could not believe
how smart it was. Check out this YouTube video on how crows can figure stuff
out...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz7WKiC4SpY.

Oh my gosh. A crow just came through the yard and snatched a male cardinal. The
blue jays went after it pretty hard, but he made off with the cardinal in its
talons. We have a neighborhood Cooper's so that's what I assumed it would be.
No. A Crow.
Do crows prey on other live, adult birds regularly? I assume they are like jays
and steal from nests whenever possible, but adult birds?

Hello,
I hope someone can help me out.

[mou-net] Carrol Henderson will be at MRVAC this Thursday

2014-05-20 Thread Steve Weston
*This Thursday, Carrol Henderson will be our program speaker at the
MInnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter this Thursday. Our meetings are
free and open to the public.*

*Bird Study in Cuba*
*by Carrol Henderson*, Minnesota DNR
Carrol Henderson and his wife Ethelle have led two bird study trips to Cuba
in the past year and have discovered a wonderful bird-rich environment in a
country where 20% of the land is set aside as natural areas and national
parks to protect their extraordinary biological diversity. Cuba has 26
endemic birds, more than the Galapagos Islands. General nature tourism or
“birdwatching” is not allowed in Cuba because of restrictions imposed by
the US Treasury Department in accordance with the current trade embargo on
Cuba. However, the Treasury Department does allow “bird study” for US
citizens when they are part of nonprofit-sponsored “People-to-People” or
“Humanitarian Projects for the Environment” project in Cuba. Come and learn
about why Cuba has so many endemic wildlife species, what are the unique
birds that can be seen in Cuba, what species of North American birds winter
in Cuba, and what are some of the special habitats that provide habitat for
wildlife there.

*When*: Please join us this Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00 pm to socialize over
cookies. A brief business meeting and the featured speaker begin at 7:30
pm. Meeting will conclude before 9:00 pm.

*Where*: Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center 3815
American Blvd E, Bloomington. Take Hwy 494 to 34th Ave. Go south to
American Blvd; turn left and go 2 blocks. Center will be on your right.
Enter through the door at the middle of the building. Seating is limited
and there is a possibility, although not expected, that late arrivals may
be turned away.

*Public Transit*: Accessible by METRO Blue line (Hiawatha light rail), The
Visitor Center is a couple of blocks east of the American Blvd. stop.
