[mou-net] Northwest Minnesota Birding Report- Friday, May 8, 2020

2020-05-08 Thread Jeanie Joppru
This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, May 8, 2020
sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also
see this report on the Chamber of Commerce website:

https://www.visitdetroitlakes.com/birding-report

This has been a busy week for migration. Birds are streaming in, and every
day has brought new ones to the area. Weather has been cold, but mostly
sunny but the grass is turning green anyway. In the northwest, part of the
area, there has been little rain so roads are mostly in good condition.
Caution is always advised in spring, however, as the road conditions can
change quickly and variably.

Many of the sightings have come from the southern part of the area. Charlene
Nelson has kept me posted of the migration in Grant County. So far she has
listed HOUSE WREN, LEAST FLYCATCHER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, OVENBIRD,
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, HARRIS'S SPARROW, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, GRAY CATBIRD,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. Terry Brokke found WESTERN
MEADOWLARK and SAVANNAH SPARROW near the North Ottawa Impoundment on May
2nd. Various observers have seen WHITE-FACED IBIS at the North Ottawa
Impoundment in recent days.

Kim Martinson reported a WESTERN TANAGER in Wilkin County on May 5th.
Margene Newton observed a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on May 3rd, and
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and GRAY CATBIRD on May 4th.

Warblers are starting to arrive in Otter Tail County this week. Several
folks have reported BALTIMORE ORIOLES and RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS in
Fergus Falls this week. An EASTERN TOWHEE was seen on May 6th by Noah
Heidorn in Fergus Falls. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen by Wayne Perala west
of the Orwell Dam on Ma6y 3rd, and he found a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER at
Inspiration Peak on May 4th. Other species reported in Otter Tail County
included TREE SWALLOW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, HARRIS'S SPARROW,
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and INDIGO BUNTING.

Lee Kensinger reported EASTERN PHOEBE, PALM WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Dunton Locks County Park in Becker County on
May 6th, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER in Detroit Lakes on May 7th.
David Baer saw an OSPREY in the county on May 6th.

Dennis Weisenborn observed a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH in Moorhead, Clay County,
on May 5th.

In Polk County, Chad Plencner reported a CATTLE EGRET at Climax on May 4th.
Sandy Aubol has a wide variety of sparrows coming to her yard as of May 3rd.
They include WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, HARRIS'S
SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW, and LARK SPARROW. A COOPER'S HAWK took note of
that also. On May 4th, she had ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and SWAINSON'S
THRUSH.

Heidi Hughes found a WHITE-FACED IBIS at the Agassiz Valley Impoundment in
Marshall County on May 2nd.

In Pennington County, Krystal Kozicki reported and photographed a PAINTED
BUNTING at her feeder in Thief River Falls on May 2nd. As far as I know it
has not been seen since. This week at our feeders we have had a full
complement of sparrows. On the Red Lake River, a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT
was seen on May 2. A LARK SPARROW has been hanging around the yard since
May 6th.

A PURPLE MARTIN has returned to Beltrami County this week.

Renee Colden saw a SUMMER TANAGER in Roseau, Roseau County on May 1st.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjop...@mncable.net
OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's numbers 218-847-5743 or 218- 847-9202.
Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled
update of this report is Thursday, May 14, 2020.

Hello

In the future if someone's account is compromised and it sends spam to the
list please don't reply to it. You are just adding it back to the list,
and it ends up in the people subscribed inboxes.

As soon as I am aware of it, I will remove people from the list whose

Re: [mou-net] No mockingbird???

2020-05-08 Thread Kyle TePoel
Just a general question, spurred by the mockingbird email (but not about
the mockingbird specifically)--how many bird "things" (report sources) are
people signed up for? For example, the first email titled 'No
Mockingbird???' implied knowledge among the general MOU-net recipients
about a mockingbird in the first place (I didn't get an email about one
previously, anyway). There's no location mentioned in that or the follow-up
email, either--is it assumed this is common knowledge? I'm guessing it's a
bird reported on ebird (for which I don't yet have an account, so that
could be my problem), but I have multiple email listserv acounts and am on
multiple Minnesota bird-related Facbook groups.

I'm not really a chaser, so it's not affecting me much but I am just
generally curious. That said, if something interesting were to be found
next door I could theoretically not know about it if I'm not getting all
the right reports. My question is not MOU-net specific; even if I was on
ebird, I'd miss things that are only posted here, or on Facebook, etc. And
it happens on the Facebook pages it happens too, where a report comes
through, often suggesting a unique bird has been somewhere for days, and
that everyone knows about it, but I can't be the only one who finds
themselves the last to know, am I? For those of you who think you have a
handle on pretty much all the birding reports locally, feel free to write
back with the list of sources you're receiving. I realize that ebird is
"THE" source for a lot of birders, yet I'm curious about the average number
of bird-related sources people are subscribing/contributing to. I consider
myself a serious (whatever that means) birder, and probably haven't heard
of them all. :)

2020-05-08 Thread Paul Budde
I think it's a real problem, Kyle, and not limited to just Minnesota. And I
don’t have a solution. You mentioned that ebird might be "THE" source for a
lot of birders, but it isn't as good as an email blast (in my opinion). But
even that requires the reporter and the receiver being on the same email
listservice.

Respectfully, one solution would be for the poster to provide the basic

Re: [mou-net] No mockingbird???

2020-05-08 Thread Jason Frank
The Mockingbird is currently still on the MOU homepage, in the pic
column, far right.

It seems that a lot of the birds featured there recently haven't been
accompanied by email reports.

I can't stand the eBird interface and have no intention of carrying a
smartphone, but I do check the MOU homepage several times a day
because the latest eBird reports are right there to browse.

If you sign up for an eBird, even if you don't use it for reporting,
you can still sign up for rare bird alerts (via email) by county.

One partial solution to this may be asking the MOU admins to require a
listserv report with photo submissions.

Re: [mou-net] No mockingbird???

2020-05-08 Thread Alyssa DeRubeis
For those who are interested in this particular sighting, it is available
through eBird's Minnesota Rare Bird Alert. It's in Carver County. Here's a
link to the checklist (which has the location information):
https://ebird.org/checklist/S68560927. As previously stated, I usually
share rare bird observations I find elsewhere to this list-serve. But I
have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise re-posting would become a bigger
task. Therefore, I only focus on casual and accidental species. Northern
Mockingbird is considered "rare regular" because it occurs in the state
each year.

[mou-net] 8 May Bullock’s Oriole-Take II

2020-05-08 Thread mou
(Posted by Linda Sparling via moumn.org)

I went back up to get better looks and a photo of the Bullock’s Oriole in
Riverton, Crow Wing County. He appeared briefly at 12:15, 35 minutes after my
arrival. As others have reported, he’s pretty skiddish. He first came to the
tall
shrub next to the jelly feeder, went away and came in to the feeder after a few
minutes. He stayed maybe eight seconds. Pam Perry, her nephew Neal (sorry,
forgot the last name) and one other person saw the bird. I got one blurry photo
before he departed. I stayed for over another hour and the bird did not return.

I read on one of the FB birding pages that the owners’ driveway has been
blocked and too many people are using a neighbor’s driveway to turn around
and it’s not appreciated.

He may go with this front coming through tonight. But if you want to chase, the
address again is 16702 2nd, Riverton. As you turn onto 2nd you’ll immediately
see the brown house with lots of feeders in front. You can park your cars in
front
of the house (not the driveway!) on the park side of the street. Each time
I’ve
seen the bird he goes to the jelly feeder next to the orange oriole feeder.

[mou-net] Redwing

2020-05-08 Thread Monica Bryand
Well the warblers were few in numbers, the lowest I’ve seen in 20 years.

On the bright side, redheaded woodpeckers at Hok-si-la, they were there at
8:00am and 7:00pm so they may be nesting there. Spotted by the parking lot
both times.

Cemetery: tufted titmice, blue-gray gnatcatchers, towhee, Baltimore
orioles, and a few other feathered friends.

Frontinac: lots of sparrows including three lark sparrows.
