Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders

2022-04-15 Thread Kathryn Rudd
Has anyone recommended what can be done with the many many Canada Geese who are
some of the main spreaders of avian influenza? Bird feeders can be emptied, and
songbirds either die of avian flu or starve in our nasty freezes this week
because there is no food. Meanwhile, what is stopping the proliferation of
geese everywhere spreading this disease? Somebody talk me down please.

[mou-net] Eurasian Tree Sparrows - Tower MN (St. Louis County)

2022-04-15 Thread Steve Wilson
Today two Eurasian tree sparrows joined the swarms of redpolls, grackles,
blackbirds, smattering of juncos and lone fox sparrow at our Tower feeder.
These are the first I've seen in 50 years of bird feeding in NE MN.

*Forwarded to MOU-NET at the request of MN DNR:*

The DNR is aware of the recommendations put forth by the Raptor Center with
UMN and our own guidance, at this time, has not changed. We have not
received any confirmed reports of songbirds affected by this strain of
avian influenza. DNR guidance aligns with recommendations by the USGS
National Wildlife Health Center and USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection
Service, the leading authorities on this disease.

We do recommend individuals clean their bird feeders regularly, as this
helps protect birds against other infections, such as salmonella. Our best
practices for cleaning bird feeders are available on our website:

Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders

2022-04-15 Thread Steve Slocum
This is a pretty simple request from the Raptor Center as passed along by
Jim Williams. I would count them as ornithologists, wouldn't you?. Since
birds get very little of their three squares from our feeders, dumping out
the feeders now won't affect them in the least. Isn't it better to err on
the side of caution and not spread this disease knowingly.

Not finding dead birds is not a good indicator of their mortality numbers
anyway. A dead B.C. Chickadee or D.E. Junco in your flower bed wouldn't
even be noticed except by a hungry opossum, racoon, or coyote. Much easier
to count (and see) a dead crow or owl, especially with all the attention an
owl nest gets this time of year.

If we birders do our part, take down our feeders and bird baths, maybe by
July this will be over and we'll be seeing the fledglings.
My nickel's worth.

[mou-net] Coon Rapids Dam Birds - Anoka County Side

2022-04-15 Thread Refsnider
On this meager excuse for a spring day, Maureen & I decided to get some
fresh air (!) and exercise by hiking upstream from Coon Rapids Dam on
the Anoka County side of the Mississippi River.  We walked upstream on
the riverside paved trail and back downstream on the inland gravel trail
through the sheltering woods.

Highlights:
Common Loon - 1, by the entrance to the boat launch lagoon
Pied-billed Grebe - 1, in the boat launch lagoon
Double-crested Cormorants - 18 in one flock, plus scattered individuals
up and down the river

Turkey Vulture - 1; FOY for us
Tree Swallows - many over the river, flapping hard just to maintain position
Pileated Woodpecker - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1, up the hill from the visitors' center; FOY
Ruby-crowned Kinglets - 3-4
Golden-crowned Kinglets - numerous, saw 4-5 small flocks
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 5, at several more sheltered locations,
including 2 just up the hill from visitors' center; FOY
Hermit Thrush - 2; one midway along the river trail and one east of the
visitors' center; FOY

Spring is indeed here, butsometimesit takes a bit of searching out.

Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders

2022-04-15 Thread Pat Wolesky
I know some people who called the Raptor Center about the owlets at Nokomis.
All 3 owlets are dead, and it's confirmed that it was avian flu. The Raptor
Center also reported that two adults had died in that general area, but a
friend went there after that report was made and saw an adult owl near the
nest, still alive. And that was yesterday, so it's possible that by now the
last adult has also died.

Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders

2022-04-15 Thread Tom Gilde
I’m hoping that the ornithologists will weigh in. I’m planning to run out the
rest of the sunflower seed in our feeder and then not refill until late June,
approximately. What I’ve read suggests that avian flu is principally spreading
via waterfowl and that raptors which come in contact with them also potentially
become another vector. The late June timeframe also is based on what I’ve read
- that the flu dissipates in the summer. I imagine that crows could also
become vectors if they eat infected carrion. I’m hoping that most songbirds
are relatively less likely to be exposed but I’ll take down the feeder for the
present. Would definitely like to hear from a professional.

Re: [mou-net] Avian influenza and bird feeders

2022-04-15 Thread Steve Weston
I have heard the call to take down bird feeders and I have responded
marginally. So far, the only report of any backyard birds being found
infected has been a Blue Jay in Nova Scotia. I do not get any congregation
of birds on my feeders, so I haven't responded because of that. I do have
one feeder that because of its proximity to a Wood Duck box, does
occasionally have the ducks perch on it. That feeder is empty and will not
at this time be refilled.

The popular Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive is open for the season. There still
are a few soft sections (especially around the wetland at Milepost 3) so do
take some care.Eastern Meadowlarks have been seen and heard in the general
area along with many Trumpeter Swans and Greater Sandhill Cranes.
