[mou] Aitkin Cty Birding
Chet Meyers writes: Sorry for late past. Keith Olstad and I birded north of the town of Aitkin yesterday and rolled perfect sevens (well almost): 7 bald eagles (all adult) 7 rough-legged hawks (l dark morph), 7 northern shrikes (all skittish), 7 northern hawks owls, and 1 great gray owl (very cooperative). Most of the owls were along highway 18 east of 169, or along 1 north of the town of Aitkin. One late common grackle in Palisade. Thanks to Warren Nelson for keeping us all posted on Aitkin. Chet Meyers, Hennepin Cty.
[mou] Cackling Goose LBBG
Chet Meyers writes: Yesterday afternoon, Dec. 6th, the cackling goose was still present in Lakewood Cemetery (entrance S. Hennepin 36th St. in Mpls) and the lesser black-backed gull was on Lake Calhoun. As you sort through the hundred or more regular Canada geese, be aware that the cemetery closes its gates around sunset. Chet Meyers, Hennepin Cty.
[mou] Cackling goose back - Hen. Cty.
Chet Meyers writes: After a week's absense (probably just hiding) the Richardson's cackling goose is back in Calhoun/Harriet area. There are now over 200 Canada geese, so it's a little more of a challenge, but the bird does jump out at you when you see it. If you can't find it on the lakes, drive around Calhoun and look for grassy areas. This morning it was in Lakewood Cemetary which is parallel to the east shore of Calhoun. Other waterfowl are trickling into the city lakes. Chet Meyers, Hennepin Cty.
[mou] Cackling Goose Hennepin Cnty.
It's been a slow few days with all the drizzle, but late this afternoon (Oct. 22) I found a cackling goose on the west side of Lake Calhoun in the soccer field about 1/4 mile south of Lake Street. The bird was in amongest a flock of 78 Canadian geese that were grounded due to fog. It was slightly larger than a herring gull that conveniently strolled by as I was watching. Fits the description of Richardson's as the breast was light... rounded head..very short bill... and short legs. It really stood out from the flock of Canadian geese. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Twin Cities Gull Watchers - L. Harriet
Chet Meyers writes: Tonight (9-20) after failing to see the lesser black-backed gull on Lake Calhoun, I drove over to Lake Harriet in VERY dim light. Still I could see there were about four times as many gulls there as on Lake Calhoun. I suppose this was due to the strong south wind the last two days. Anyhow, this fall, don't forget to check Lake Harriet. Tundra swans always seem to show up there, and last year the lesser black-backed spent some time on Harriet (thought primarily on Calhoun). Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Purgatory Creek construction
Many of us have been enjoying seeing Hennepin County shorebirds at the Purgatory Creek wetland in Eden Prairie. For those who have not yet been there, be advised there's a construction project in progress, creating a wetland hiking trail. Please do not go beyond the yellow construction tape area; and when workmen are present please ask if it is O.K. for you to bird the partially constructed path. They have been most cooperative when I asked, and a number have had a peek at shorebirds through my scope. Let's use our best birding etiquette so as not to alienate workpersons. According to an engineer I talked with, the wetland bridge should be completed in two weeks, and hopefully the entire trail not long after that. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County.
[mou] Fall Warbler Migration
Finally, after last night's chilly but delightful cold front, the fall warbler migration in the Twin Cities is moving. Birding just about every other day since August 4th, I ran into my first warblers waves (or 'wavelets') today. Birding around Minneapolis lakes area we've seen eleven different species already this fall: yellow (migrants from up north..not local), Tennessee, Nashville, black white, Amer. redstart, chestnut-sided, mourning, Blackburnian, Wilson's, Canada, and northern waterthrush. Get out and join the fun. They really are not all that confusing. A number of birding friends reported bigger than normal numbers of blackpolls this spring. Let's see what the fall brings. Those fall blackpolls and bay-breasted (or as Pete Dunne calls them baypolls) can be a little tough to ID. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Sod Farms - no go
Visited both the Empire and Castle Rock sod farms today (Aug. 6)and no shorebirds. Was hoping for early buff-breasted. The Castle Rock sod farms are about one half stripped of sod, which may bode well if we get a lot of rain this fall. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Hooded Warblers - Scott Cty.
I've seen a few posts on hooded warblers, but not sure about any reports from their traditional area in Murphy Hanrehan Park (Scott County). Anyway, today (5/24) I heard two and saw one hooded warbler in the general area they usually frequent in Murphy Hanrehan. Scarlet tanagers (at least the males) were active... seven sightings, also one olive-sided flycatcher. Chet Meyers - Hennepin County
[mou] Hen.Cty. Black Duck
For county and year listers, there is a pair of black ducks at the north end of Lake of the Isles in the open water that is beginning to ring the lake. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Hermit Thrush Hen.Cty.
If anyone is interested the hermit thrush apparently likes our yard. It feeds on grapes off the ivy on the side of our house and then sits in the river birch close by. Sometimes it flies to tree just behid our garage. Address: 2000 West 21st St. at north end of Lake of the Isles near Lake of Isles Lutheran Church. Chet Meyers, Hennepin Cty.
[mou] Hermit Thrush, Hennepin Cty.
This morning at breakfast a different bird flew into a tree in our backyard. Then it obligingly flew closer and when I went outside perched right over my head. A hermit thrush. It must have some kind of anti-freeze in its system. I'll let folks know if it hangs around. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Peregrine Downtown Mpls.
After a number of months absense, a peregrine falcon was seen hunting in downtown Minneapolis Monday Jan 12th about 1:00 p.m. Best bet, the high buildings between Hennepin and Nicollet bordered by 7th and 9th streets, where it usually sits to dine on breast of rock pigeon. Birders who work downtown... keep your eyes on the skies. Chet Meyers, Hennepin County
[mou] Carolina wren still present
This morning (12-29) between 9:45 and 10:15 I observed the Carolina wren at the previous mentioned location, (105 Stinson Blvd. just north of County Rd. E) on the far western border of Ramsey County. It was mixed in with a flock of dark-eyed juncos.
[mou] Hennepin Cty - possible hoary redpoll
This afternoon (Dec. 16) I drove Lakewood Cemetary in hopes of a few winter finches. At the south end of the small lake I found a flock of about 50 redpolls in one of the large birch trees between the road and the lake. One caught my eye. It was a male with limited pink on the breast and very faint streaking on the sides, giving it an overall pale look. Its undertail coverts were pure white and its head was also light. The flock flew off and I depaired, but then noticed that this bird remained. Obviously it wanted to be viewed. I moved around with my scope to get a better view of its rump which did have a few streaks, but very light. Observed the bird for about twenty minutes. Don't know if there is any significance to this bird remaining while all the others flew off, and I realize there are those damn gradations, but it looked like a hoary to me. Hope the flock stays around so others can make their judgment. The flock did come back just as I was leaving. Chet Meyers Hennepin County
[mou] Mpls. City Lakes - boo-hoo
Tonight there was skim ice and common mergansers on Lake Calhoun, a sure sign the lake is about to freeze over. City birders may want to get out tomorrow and take a last winter look at our gulls, ducks, and mergansers before the lake freezes tight. Chet Meyers Hennepin County
[mou] Twin Cities gulls
If folks have wondered where all the gulls have gone from Lake Calhoun, the answer is Lake Harriet. The birds vacillate between the two lakes, often as a function of wind direction. Tonight (Nov. 24) they were all packed into Harriet in very close viewing range. Keep your eyes open for interesting gulls and diving duck the next few weeks. Chet Meyers Hennepin County
[mou] Tundra Swans Mpls. city lakes
While driving home from work today I 'looped' the city lakes and found 47 tundra swans on Lake Calhoun and 49 on Lake Harriet... mostly adults, but some first-year birds. The gulls were most active but with my compact binocs and the sleet coming down it was difficult to ID any. One very large, dark gull caught my eye but it got lost in the sleet. I imagine the swans will stay the night, so morning might reveal even more surprises. Chet Meyers Hennepin County
[mou] New Germany - update
Today Miriam and I briefly birded New Germany. The willows have grown so thick along Yancy that it is impossible to see anything much from the road, but that matters little at this point as the water is too high to afford any shoreline. There are a few shorebirds in the flooded pig farm field on Yale.. the usual suspects. The wetland that straddles Highway 7 on the Carver-McLeod county line finally has some useable shoreline and we found small numbers of shorebirds (5 common species) as well as 49 great egrets. We explored and found no new areas. Previously flooded farm fields have dried up and are filling with vegetation and crops.
[mou] Salt Lake shorebirds
Today Keith Olstad and I birded Lac Qui Parle and Big Stone counties. Big Stone Refuge has so much water in it there were very few shorebirds to be seen. Our best stop was at Salt Lake in Lac Qui Parle county where we saw ten (10) shorebird species, including: killdeer, lesser yellow legs (many), greater yellow legs (one), least sandpiper (many), semi-palmated sandpiper (one), short billed dowitcher, pectoral sandpiper (one with a nice dark 'bib'), solitary sandpiper, spotted sandpiper, and Wilson's phalarope. Many formerly flooded fields were dry, but most lakes were brim-full. Not the best conditions for shorebirds habitat. Chet Meyers Hennepin County
