[mou-net] GBH in Hennepin County

2012-03-24 Thread Curt Rawn
I drove by the Great Blue Heron rookery on the Mississippi river by Marshall
Terrace and counted 19 birds on about 30 nests. I was on the West side of the
river and did not use a scope, so I might have missed one or two.

north of Aitkin is still there. I found it about a mile east of the
intersection of C.R.1 and C.R.22 north of Aitkin, sitting on a pile of
hay bales. I found a GREAT GRAY OWL on Pietz'a road 2/10ths of a mile
north of C.R.18. On the snowmobile road south of Pietz's road, I found a
small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 3 GRAY JAYS, 1 BOREAL CHICKADEE
and lots of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES. Also seen: 2 flocks of SNOW

Leslie Englert has had a male Western Tanager visiting her feeder in Maple
Grove, Hennepin County, since 11 January. Birders are welcome to visit,
though she has asked that people please park on the street and walk into the
backyard from the right side of the house. The houses are close together
there and, in pointing this out, she specifically requests that birders
please be considerate of her neighbors.

Leslie's directions are:

From I-494 take Bass Lake Road exit, head west. After Vicksburg Lane, there
is construction on Bass Lake Road. Continue to the 2nd traffic light (after
the one at Vicksburg Lane) and turn left onto Lawndale. Turn right onto
Fieldstone Blvd. Take the 2nd right onto Queensland Lane N and take the
second right again onto Queensland Lane N. Fourth house on the right,
#6448.

This is a record late Western Tanager by several months. The previous latest
date on record is 16 September 1989 (Duluth).

[mou-net] Long-tailed Duck not found Hennepin County and Bald Eagle lunch

2011-11-30 Thread Curt Rawn
The Long-tailed Duck was not re-found on Lake Calhoun in Mpls today, however, I
did see the Horned Grebe.

At Medicine Lake In Plymouth, I watched a mature Bald Eagle swoop over a raft
of what I think were American Coots. They were in a small area of open water
and ducked while an Eagle soared over them. Then a second Eagle landed on a
Coot and after a minute flew away with it. I drove by the spot where it was
having lunch (a Muskrat Den), and watched it plucking feathers from the Coot.

Swift count, Hennepin county

I counted again at the school at 12325 Hwy 55 in Golden Valley, sometimes
called 'Tiny Acorns'.
It was much cooler and breezy and the birds went in slower this time. On Friday
I counted 310 birds; tonight's count was 435! Usually the birds flock CW or
CCW. Not so tonight, they were circling in both directions at once, and
entering the chimney in a straight line. I thought they were entering much
later than usual, but when finished it was 9:13pm.

Counting at Cedar Manor School at 9400 Cedar Lake Rd, in St. Louis Park (with
86f heat and 75 dewpoint,
...not that I would mention that), I found 26 birds in a chimney where last
year I found 2 birds.
I also noted 2 birds doing paired flight with wings in a 'V' position;
courtship behavior, as I understand it.
Birds started entering the chimney at 8:50pm and were in by 9:15pm.
I also saw one Common Nighthawk.

A question for the Swift counters. Have you noticed Robins flying in one
particular direction during these counts?

[mou-net] Great Blue Heron rookery, Hennepin County

2011-03-28 Thread Curt Rawn
I scoped the Great Blue Heron rookery North of the Camden Avenue bridge on the
Mississippi at 2:30pm. About 3/4 of the nests are taken by at least one Heron.

It occurs to me now that I should have counted them, and the number of nests.

I was looking for an owl's nest in the midst of it. If one is there it was
hunkered down low and I didn't see it. I did get to see mating, nest building,
preening and much flying about. Some of this was in the company of an adult
Bald Eagle which stayed to one side, without inhibiting their behavior

This rookery can be reached via the nature center at 49th and Lyndale Avenue
North, in Minneapolis.

[mou-net] Birds and Beers, 7:15 pm Sunday 4/18/2010 Lebanon Hills, The Woodcock.

2010-04-15 Thread Curt Rawn
Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Lebanon Hills Regional Park. The woodcocks start
their display about 15 - 20 minutes after sunset, which means they will start
around 8:30pm. Since the display area is next to the visitor center at the
park, we'll meet there starting about 7:15 pm and have an old fashioned
tailgate party-you can come early to mingle or come closer to magic hour.
Bring your own food and beverages and we'll laugh until it's Woodcock Time.
The park closes at 10pm, so this gives us plenty of time to get some great
birding done.

[mou-net] Great Blue Heron rookery, Hennepin county

I stopped by the North Mississippi Regional Park to look for Great Horned Owls
nesting in the Great Blue Heron rookery. I saw none, though I was there for 1
1/2 hours.

I did see 6 GBHE on 4 nests, and also saw mating behavior and one pair
copulating.
Here is a map link to the park.

[mou-net] Sax Zim and Lake County

2010-03-11 Thread Curt Rawn
Sax Zim area.

Yesterday, in the rain, I sat in my car between the two feeders on Admiral Road
and thought I was in Chickadee heaven. There were about 30 black capped
Chickadees, flying in to get seeds and out, to perch on branches and eat the
seeds. Add Red-breasted Nuthatches plus Downy and Hairy woodpeckers and I
thought my day complete. Then a Boreal Chickadee flew to the suet feeder! It
was a lifer for me! What a beautiful bird!
Also there was a Northern Hawk Owl, on County Road 7 by Stone Lake Road.

On Stony River Forest Road in Lake County, I watched a male Ruffed Grouse,
displaying for 3 females, also lifers. Stony was a white knuckle ride in my
Toyota Camry, so I did not dare turning on to Whyte Road.

[mou-net] Birds & Beers on Jan. 31 at Joe's Garage 4pm

2010-01-25 Thread Curt Rawn
Birds and Beers is on a Sunday this month!

http://www.birdchick.com/wp/birds-and-beers/

We're going to gather at Joe's Garage on the upper floor (indoors) and watch
the crows come in to their winter roost. See close to a million crows fly in
to a small park, while we enjoy the great food and atmosphere at Joe's
Garage. 1610 Harmon Place, Minneapolis. www.joes-*garage*.com (612)
904-1163.

Joe's Garage faces Loring Park and has great food. When contacted, they
graciously offered our group the upper level with windows facing the park so
we can watch thousands upon thousands of crows come in for their nightly
roost. The crows come to roost at dusk and this time of year, sunset is
early. If we get there at 4pm, the action will be just underway.

There is parking in and around the park in the form of lots and meters, but
be prepared to pay for parking with either quarters, cash, or maybe a check
card. Joe's Garage has detailed directions on how to get to their location.
I hope you can make it, I'm looking forward to actually combining some birds
with our usual beer.

Subject: [mou-net] birding gift ideas?

Each year the family asks for my Christmas list, knowing that at least one
item will be for the One True Hobby (birding). My true wants are well
beyond their budgets, so I usually just ask for a book or similar
reasonably-priced item ... and get it. For example, this year's request
is a book/DVD to help with gull ID.

So, this is an invitation to nominate your favorite gifts received in the
past or given to another birder. Books or anything else that has been
appreciated might be named. Let's keep it to nominal price, say, less
than $50.

Please forward to me at fberd...@yahoo.com

I'll assemble a list and post it in 7-10 days. That should give us all
answers to that daunting question: "What gifts would Minnesota birders
really like to receive?"

Thanks for any suggestions,

Frank Berdan

[mou-net] Chimney swift counts, Hennepin county

2009-08-10 Thread Curt Rawn
On Saturday night I counted chimney swifts during the lightening and tornado
warnings. I was in the car with the windows up, so I was safe from lightening,
and the tornado's path was closer to my home than to me.
I counted at 620 Mendelssohn Ave N, in Golden Valley, MN. My count was 565.

Not sure how accurate it was I wanted to do it again. Black birds were quickly
going into a chimney with black clouds behind it.
Sunday I brought help. With 2 other counters, we averaged 367 swifts. Likely a
more accurate count.

[mou-net] No Partridge

2009-03-02 Thread Curt Rawn
While birding in Dakota County, today, we saw Snow Buntings, and Horned Larks.
Our quest was the Gray Partridge, but sadly we were shut out. We watched the
area of 180th St. and Joan Ave around 2:15 pm and from 5-6:15 pm.

It was a chilly, but beautiful day, and we walked at Carpenter Park. While
there, we saw a pair of immature Bald Eagles soaring overhead.

There would be no challenge, if you saw every bird you went after.

The MN Breeding Bird Atlas is a 5-year state-wide breeding bird survey and
it is starting soon - in spring 2009. It is the most comprehensive bird
survey ever conducted in MN. This project will require hundreds of
surveyors to document breeding status for all species observed within
selected areas in 2400+ townships. If you are interested in learning more
about being a volunteer atlas surveyor, just send your name and the area of
the state you are interested in and I will contact you by reply.

Also, to manage an effort of this size, the state is divided into 32 regions
and each region needs a volunteer coordinator, or coordination team, to keep
the project on track. If you, or a small regional team, are knowledgeable
about local birds and their habitats, can recruit and support surveyors, and
are comfortable working with data online, contact me for more information.

Wednesday March 4th, I saw a pair of Red-tailed Hawks in Golden Valley. They
were perched high in a tree about 2 feet apart, by Highway 169 at the
intersection of Mendelssohn Ave and 10th Ave North. There is a fenced yard
owned by the city at this locale with many large trees.

These birds both had a very faint belly band, white speckled V on the scapulars
and noticeable red tails. One was much larger than the other. I saw them at 9
am and later at 11:45 am., and watched the larger one fly off 1/4 mile NE. I
did not spot a nest.

[mou] Inter-Species Feeding

2007-07-29 Thread Curt Rawn
Larry,
I have had a Chipping Sparrow and a Cowbird at my feeder too. I had read of
this from other sources and was also confused by the size and look of the
chick when I finally saw one.
A year earlier, before I learned of MOUMN.ORG, I had a similar experience at
my suet feeder. An adult Downy had been feeding on the feeder when a Downy
chick flew up and perched on the wall near it. The adult stuffed some suet
into the chick's open mouth and flew off leaving the chick on the wall.
Moments later a Black-capped Chickadee landed on the feeder; when the Downy
chick fluttered its wings the Chickadee also stuffed some suet into the
Downy's mouth.
That parenting instinct seems pretty strong.
