[mou-net] Barred Owl, visible, Minnetonka, Hennepin Co
A Barred Owl is visible in the Norway Spruce off our rear deck. It can only be seen from inside the house. You may call to see if it still here before stopping by. It is watching the ground for rodents at this time. Perhaps hunting was poor last night due to the snow storm. Many folks have asked about "our" screech owl. I check our video camera every day and the owl has not been in the box. We have not seen the screech owl yet this fall/winter season. Maybe the mild weather has allowed it to stay away from the box. Barred Owls have been regulars in the yard for a year. That might also be an issue for the screech owl. I won't post again until I see the screech owl. At 7:50 am one owl sitting in the Norway Spruce north of our deck. I think you can only see it from inside our house. You can call me if you want to see it (if it stays put). The other is in a tall thin pine 30 ft. north of the pole mounted wood duck boxes at the northwest corner of our house. You can see it from the street. Just park west of the spruce trees at the southwest corner of our house. The owls seem to be snoozing. I have put up a nest box for Barred Owls along my north property line. Maybe I'll get a pair. At 9:50 am the owl sitting in the Norway Spruce on the north side of our house began to call. I could hear a second Barred Owl was calling back. After a few minutes the second owl landed in the spruce a few feet above the first one. They were both calling with the "monkey call." The first owl started making a soft sound I couldn't hear well and was staring at the second owl. The first owl then flew up and tried to mount the other owl. The second flew off to a near by tree, followed part way by the male. The pair were both visible for a short time. The female left my sight and the male is still in a boxelder at the north corner of our house. I think you can only see it from inside our house. At 8:30 am I checked our video camera and the owl was not in the box. Yesterday, throughout the day, a number of people got to see the owl sitting at the entry hole of the Wood Duck box. It was a real jack-in-the-box yesterday. I can't get over the Chickadees, I watched them buzz just inches away from the owl's face. One even hovered right in front of it. At times Blue Jays and N. Cardinals joined in the mob. The owl tried to ignore the activity, keeping it's eyes nearly shut, until it had enough and dropped back into the box. At 4 P.M. the owl sat continuously at the hole until it flew out at 5:15 P.M.. There was enough light that I saw it fly into the Norway Spruce behind the house. I even got some photos. [mou-net] Rough-legged Hawk, Eagan, Dakota Co
A dark phase Rough-legged Hawk is at the intersection of MN State Highways 13 and 77. The bird often sits on the tall lightpoles in the cloverleaf. It also uses the trees along 13 and sometimes sits on the snow. This may be a young bird, the eyes looked pale yellow. The upper tail surface at the rump was dark, as was the trailing edge of the wing. The hawk was loafing on a pole at 10 AM and very active from 12:30 to 1 PM, when we left. Of course the big show started just after the group Anne and I were leading for MRVAC and the MN Valley National Wildlife Refuge broke up. The hawk hovered almost 100 feet overhead of us, pointing it's head straight down and extending it's legs. Once again my camera was nice and warm, at home. Depending on lighting direction and what quadrant of the intersection the hawk is in, good viewing can be had from: the high ground along Sibley Court west of Old Sibley Memorial Hwy.; near the U-Haul dealer at Nicols Rd. and Cedarview Dr.; or the Goodyear dealer at Nicols Rd., south of Silver Bell Rd. Many people have asked if we have a screech owl roosting in our wood duck box again this winter. So far this season we have not seen one. Last week there was a big mob of chickadees, blue jays and cardinals giving alarm calls and checking the box by looking in the hole. By the time I got to the TV there was nothing in the box. The owl has not been back to the box since I posted it present last Friday. I did not have time to post that it was not present on the days after that. You are welcome to stop by and check from the street to see if it is sitting at the entry hole anytime. We will be in and out quite a bit this week and next, so I don't think you should count on seeing it on our video system then. I will post to MOU net the next time I see it in the box. Today, Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, 10:15 a.m. a screech owl is in the box. It appears on the video camera to be sleeping. If the owl is not sitting at the entry hole, knock on our front door and I will let you come in and watch it on TV. Just know that I will be in and out today. We have not had the owl since Dec. 18. It is sunny, so maybe the owl will show itself. The larger pole mounted duck box at the northwest corner of our house is the one in use. You can clearly see the entry hole from your car while parked in the street in front of the southwest corner of our house. Don't try to walk closer, as that will just drive the owl down into the box. If the owl is in the box I will post. I will also post the first day it is not present. Then I will hold off posting until it returns. Good luck, owl watchers! Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009. The owl was not in the box this morning or yesterday morning. I did speak to the folks a few blocks away who have a video camera in their wood duck box and the owl was there yesterday. This owl alternates roosting sites. We had it most of last week. Maybe they will have it this week. They don't wish to have their location posted. I will let you know when the owl returns here. Today, Sun. Nov 8, 2009, a gray screech owl was sunning itself in our wood duck box at noon. It has now dropped into the box and appears on the video camera to be sleeping. Because it is warm today I expect the owl will spend much of the time this afternoon sitting in the entry hole. Just a few days ago I repaired the cable after a mouse chewed it in half. The wood shavings appeared undisturbed each day since then. There is one pellet in the box. This is the earliest fall roosting we have noted. So I think last night was the first "indoors" roosting. Last years owl was gray and often sat in the hole of the wood duck box, off and on, after 11 am until it would fly out at dusk. Often at that time there was just enough light for my eyes to see that "something" flew from the box. The larger pole mounted duck box at the northwest corner of our house is the one in use. [mou-net] directions for Purgatory Creek Recreation Area, Eden Prairie, Hennepin Co
A number of people have asked me for directions to Purgatory Creek Recreation Area and the viewing platform on the west side of the lake. There is a large parking lot and picnic shelter at the Purgatory Creek Recreation Area, 13001 Technology Drive, Eden Prairie. This is just south of the large Southwest Metro Transit Center (across Technology Drive). When you are at the picnic shelter look at the trail system map on a kiosk. There is a loop trail around the lake, a trail leads from the south end of the lake, along Purgatory Creek, to Staring Lake. There is a nature center there and a loop trail around Staring Lake as well. If you don't want to make the long walk to the observation platform on the west side of the lake you can drive over and park in the townhouse area. >From Prairie Center Drive go west on Technology Drive (past the ADC building) >to Mitchell Rd (Co Rd 60); turn left and go south past City Hall; turn left >onto Anderson Lakes Parkway and go southeast; turn left onto Chestnut Drive >and go east; you will come to a T intersection; park on the street close to >the T. The bituminous path that would be a prolongation of Chestnut Dr. is the >path you will walk east on. You will go 100 yards and come to a T >intersection. Turn left and walk north along the bituminous path, maybe 200 >yards to the first wood chip path leading to the right. Walk along the chip >path 200 yards and you will come to the boardwalk leading 200 yards to the >observation platform. All distances are approximate. Use Goggle to find the City of Eden Prairie website and see the maps for city parks and facilities. Also enter into Goggle Earth the street address for directions and satellite photo views of the area. At Purgatory Creek Recreation Area, 13001 Technology Drive, Eden Prairie, at 6 pm, we saw a male Ruddy Turnstone and a Dunlin (the Dunlin did not appear to have a full black belly patch). They were first spotted on the sand island with many Caspian Terns, Ring-billed Gulls, a few Forester's Terns and 2 American White Pelicans. The Dunlin then flew over to the grass covered island east of the sand island (we were then at the observation platform on the west shoreline). The water is getting low and Spotted Sandpipers and Least Sandpipers can still be seen on the mud flats. Thursday, Jan 15, the owl was not in the box at 7:30 am. Yesterday morning the owl had a deer mouse and a meadow vole stored in the box. It fed on them off and on throughout the day and into the evening. It was feeding at 10:30 pm last night. It never did sun itself or come out of the box until after I went to bed. The mouse and vole were gone this morning. So it seems that in spite of the -18 F temperature the owl was off to work. I was glad a small group of owl watchers got to watch it on the video system yesterday. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at 8 am, I noted the owl is in the wood duck box visible from the street. The owl is feeding on something in the box. I can't tell what, as it is standing on it. I am starting to think this owl uses the box only in stormy weather or bitter cold. Look through the pines at the southwest corner of the house to see the larger pole mounted box at the northwest corner of the house. I will be home most of the day, so knock on our door and I can show you the owl on TV if it is not sunning itself at the hole when you stop by. Sunning seems to occur between 11 am and 1 pm. Sometimes it is at the hole from 3 pm on until it leaves the box after dark. It then when back in the box and did not leave until well after dark at 6:30 pm. It was still out when I checked Sunday night at 10:30 pm. The owl is now ( 3:40 pm, Sunday ) sitting in the hole of the wood duck box. I would expect it to be at the hole until it flies out at dusk. Yesterday it was at the hole continuously until dusk. It never did sun itself during the middle of the afternoon today. The owl is now ( 3 pm, Sat. ) sitting in the hole of the wood duck box. Perhaps due to the clouds it did not sun during the noon hours. I would expect it to be at the hole off and on until it flys out, which may be sooner than full dusk since it is darker today. [mou-net] N. Saw-whet and Great Horned Owls heard, Minnetonka, Hennepin Co.
Yesterday, Friday, January 2, after dusk our microphone picked up Great Horned Owls calling in the distance at dusk and also a N. Saw-whet Owl call around 5:00 pm. The Saw-whet Owl calls have been coming from the wooded area and/or the tree line, north of our house. It must be close because we have heard the N. Saw-whet Owl while in the house. The Great Horned Owls seem to be nesting near the hilltop northwest of the intersection of Cherry Lane and Lee Way. We have seen them there against the sky in the tree tops as the light fades. Also we have seen them along Knob Hill Curve, a dead end off Highland Road, north of our house. I have only heard Saw-whet calls here a couple of times before and am keen to see one for the yard list. If you are in the area and hear one please call us. I have not seen or heard a Barred Owl in the area for several months. Hello all, When checking the video camera today, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at 10 am, I noted the owl is sleeping in the wood duck box visible from the street. Look through the pines at the southwest corner of the house to see the larger pole mounted box at the northwest corner of the house. We will be home most of the day, so knock on our door and we can show you the owl on TV if it is not sunning itself at the hole when you stop by. Sunning seems to occur between 11 am and 1 pm. Yesterday the owl slept until 4:30 pm and then ate some of the remaining woodpecker bits left in the box. Long bones and feathers when down the hatch. Pickings must be getting slim as it spent a fair amount of time kicking the wood chips around looking for more. The microphone picked up Great Horned Owls calling in the distance at dusk and also a Saw-whet Owl call around 5:00 pm. The screech owl's head snapped up when the different owl calls where heard. The owl left the box at 5:30 pm. I have only heard Saw-whet calls here a couple of times before and am keen to see one for the yard list. [mou] Eastern-screech Owl a no show, Minnetonka, Hennepin Co
The red phase Eastern-Screech Owl that was roosting in our wood duck box the past couple of winters has not returned so far. It did raise a brood with a gray female again this spring in a box about a 1/4 mile away from us. We heard a screech owl call several nights in August. No owls seen or heard except the local Barred Owl and Great Horned Owl pair since. George Skinner Minnetonka, MN -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
